INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I would like to thank you, everyone who helps with this thread, and everyone who helps each other! I am not sure if I can help with this thread, but let me know if I can: I am an Apple Mac user and a graphic designer. I don't do spread sheets, never have used Google docs although I'm sure I could figure it out. I like that you've started sub categories (like Events, Food Coop, etc.) because there are so many posts that it would be a hassle to go back and try to find someone's advice. For example, I'd like to see headings for the posts about food fermintation, remedies for parasites, photos, etc. I suppose that would compete with the overall BYC site. Since I am fairly new to BYC, maybe I just don't know how to navigate it very well.

We are working on making more articles about femintation and other things that would be helpful info for everyone. I have been doing alot of research because I am thinking of doing a blog and writing a book. Knowledge is endless. In time I would like to make this thread for us to have so much info at just the end of your finger tips and not have to search all over for your answers.

According to this, Araucanas were first imported from Chile and the Ameraucanas were derived from the araucana (which were really derived from cross breeding 2 breeds of chickens in chile). Ameraucanas are not allowed to have tufts. They are supposed to be bearded, muffed, and have a tail. Araucanas are supposed to be tufted (no beards or muffs) and rump less. That being said, you can still get araucana that don't have tufts and ave a tail. There is a lethal factor involved with the tufts. If memory serves me right, when you breed tufted roo with tufted hen, 25% of the chicks will de in their shell before hatching. Now I'm goings have to go double check

So I had to put in 15 silkie eggs in the incubator today and decided to re candle and toss the duds/clears. I ended up taking 25 eggs out of the bator :( Granted I still have 50 eggs in there, but still!

Guys I'm learning and have a dumb question. What is lock down when incubating eggs? I'm asking cause I will be setting up my bator tonight and adding 10 of my own silkie/ ameraucana eggs to it Friday. This is my first try at incubating and need as much help as possible.
Never a dumb question. It means don't open the incubator from day 18 to hatch, emergencies only. I have lockdown tonight for my first 12 eggs i set.
OK its done here's the official pics

I have the little giant 9200. Removed the turner, covered the wire floor with rubber nonskid cloth. These 12 eggs are fertile and you can't hardly see a thing in them now.

Incubators thermometer that came with it.

My 2nd thermometer with humidity

no visible pips yet. feel like i could explode waiting tho

Be careful with the rubber stuff. I tried that and it left marks all over my eggs before. Its like the rubber melts and sticks to the eggs. I don't personally recommend using it in incubator. Just my opinion.

I don't wash the eggs I set, they are usually very clean, once in a while usually when its rainy, i see a dirty one. I worry about the infection the yolk sacs can get, so i don't want to risk taking their defenses away. Whats everyone's thoughts on washing, not washing? I have read all sorts of views on it.
