INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

guess I will wait and see. If i have to,i can replace it with paper towel, or just put the towels over the rubber. I just don't want them directly on the wire. I have seen so many birds with broken toes, especially racing pigeons. I know lots of people do it with good success too.
This being my first hatch, I will be super happy if even just 1 does, But this was really a trial run for the eggs coming. My coronation sussex are on the way, these will be my first shipped eggs, and I hope at least a few hatch from them.

They are just beautiful huge birds, and way too expensive, $15 bucks a chick!

I think I will give it another shot as well. Will go buy a new roll tho. I already have my LG full of eggs again.

Quote: Wow, you are going to be on chick overload! Wait, I am there too

Since these are straight run i am expecting to see some cockerel if i have a good hatch. Hmm that would make an awesome barnyard mix bird too!

I've been researching wormers on this thread...

Really interesting reading. Been talking back and forth with neighbors, my dad and on the forum here.
I do all the preventatives, like ACV, Fermenting feed, give pumpkin the list goes on. But with them being exposed to the hogs on a regular basis I am still worried about it. Short of covering the hog pasture some of the chickens get in from my mixed flock. Closest vet office is a ways away, I guess I need to get a stool sample done just to quit worrying over it.

So I had to put in 15 silkie eggs in the incubator today and decided to re candle and toss the duds/clears. I ended up taking 25 eggs out of the bator

Granted I still have 50 eggs in there, but still!

I keep doing it too, day 7, 14 and 18.and 7, 14 21, 25 on the goose eggs. I try to take any out by the 14 day mark that aren't fertile, showing no veins, the exploding egg thing really worries me. One goose egg i have set is almost 6 ounces, that's a whole lotta stink

Years ago, my Dad wouldn't take the bad eggs til the hens left the nest. OMG the stench from the bad ones! They lived in the well pump shed, and i would go in there to reset a breaker that would trip when it rained hard, eww.... i finally had to clean the stuff out, replace all their bedding. Dad just laughed... ugh. He didn't have a gander in the flock so none of the 7 laid fertile eggs, what a waste. The Chinese geese lay every other day, and its a lot of very rich tasty eggs if you aren't hatching. When I bought him the new geese last year, I found out he didn't know you can eat the goose eggs. Glad we have internet now and know we can

Sally, I have two Little Giants that I don't use any more since I got my Sportsman. I'm in Franklin on Monday evenings and Tuesday mornings--not sure how far that is from Bargersville. You're welcome to use one or both.
Thank you so much. Bargersville is not far from Franklin at all. I'm sure I could easily be in Franklin on a Monday evening or Tuesday morning. I'll send you a message.
I don't have one but there are plenty of people with homemade ones that claim success! From little 10gal aquariums to styrofoam coolers. There's a thread/forum discussion on this very thing here on BYC. You should check it out.
I thought about making one but I would not really want to put that much effort into it and end up with something that did not work or actually cost about the same as a store model.
i cant loan you an incubator , but , ican help you build one , ive made incubators out of just about anything you can imagine , crok pots ,chirstmas lites , hair dryer , sml electric heatrs ,,,,,,gs

I did look over those but I don't really have the supplies to build any of the home made ones. by the time I got the stuff that most people might have laying around I may have spent enough to buy one.

Sorry to report that something got our Chinese Goose last night. That leaves our gander without a mate. Anyone have any Chinese Geese in the SW Indiana area that would like to sell a female?

How long do I let eggs sit before I put them in the incubator? I collected 4 more today which brings my total to 12 for my first hatch.
