INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Sounds like a great list for June. What projects do you have in mind for July?!

If I was wanting to kill some grass and had the time I would cover it with black plastic and let the summer sun kill it off. I've never actually done this, but know it is a method -- not sure how long it takes, though. You could also till the bed up -- that's how we've started garden plots. You may need to do a few multiple tillings and then after planting put thick layers of newspapers completely surrounding the plants. Then put a thick layer of mulch down. This has worked well for me in the past. If you want to do a raised bed you could till, put down thick newspapers, add enough inches of soil to fill your raised bed then plant. Lasagna gardening (haven't tried this one yet) has you cover the area with cardboard (don't think you need to till) and layer soil, compost, etc, but I think it needs to be done well in advance, perhaps the previous fall or summer? I might not have this method quite right, but you get the idea. For those beds I all of a sudden realize I need to put in I just tell my DH it's time to pull out the tiller & then do the newspaper/mulch thing when I'm done.

LOL for July I have 300 feet of privacy fence to stain and gutters/rain barrels to design and install by the coop! As well as anything else I come up with by then!

I also have to spread river rock around the coop sometime this year. I like your ideas. I am going to try the black plastic idea with some weight on it to hurry the process along. As soon as the ground is clear I will get out there and do it. I really wish I had had time last fall! Boo for not planning ahead!

Does anyone else not truly know the answer to how many chickens do you have?
It has been a while since I have counted my chickens that are outside and I did not write it down last time.
I feel bad when people call about a CL ad and ask well how many do you have. I kind of also don't want to add them all up since the number would be too high for those not in the midst of chicken math.

it took some searching but found the closest video of how we do our beds. We really love it. Everything does great and you can make them as long as you want but only 4' wide to make sure you can reach to the center without walking on it. Keep in mind we didn't have to use near the material but it's great for not wanting to have to do any digging or sod removal and we plant in it as soon as we're done building it! Not raised so to speak and no building. We have 6 or 7 of these 4' wide by 15' long and they go in different directions outlining the garden area.

I have a vague idea of how many I have. And the fact that I don't know has been brought up by the DSO as proof I have too many. When we all know there is no such thing.

That's funny! Yeah I usually just answer "Oh around 50" or whatever the number is at that time! Haha! My family ask me all the time. .they find humor in it I guess that I'm not ever really sure. ..takes some thinking! In my mind I know exactly what I have per breed but to add those together I'm slow at that extended math in my head! Lol

Never too many, especially if one uses freezer camp.

Ohh I like it, I'll just start rounding and estimating. My biggest problem comes when someone responds to a CL ad wanting a break if they were to buy all of the little chicks I have for sale. The well how many do you have and what would be the price for all of them, drives me crazy. I have multiple small groups of around 10-15 chicks but I really don't have a set price for someone to buy all of them. It is so much easier when someone says I'm looking for 5 chicks that are as young as you have, what breeds are available? Or do you have any of this breed, what age and are there 6 left.
