INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Your welcome! Hope they all hatch for you too!

I took some quick pictures if some chicks. I don't think I have ever posted these girls. They are blue and splash Cochin pullets. I got a lot of splash out of the dozen I ordered. Maybe 2-3 are blue, the rest are splash.

I love them! I can't wait until you decide which you are keeping! I'll take two of your extras!

Yes raising mealworms is a viable option. We did it for a year before we got the chickens.
I got tired of separating worm sizes, the dust and ammonia in the frass, and needed my garage space back. I decided to give up mealworming and just accept paying somebody to do it.
I'd prefer buying worms locally from an individual instead of the chain though...(hint, hint)
We've raised meal worms for about 4 yrs. They are so easy. We use chicken feed, I have them in one of those plastic 3 draw containers you get at wal mart.. Put in some potatoes and that is all we do.

Happy Valentine's Day Indiana Thread! (despite the Winter Weather Advisory!)

Here's a few more for laughs . . .

How cute !!!

I got my shipment in. I had added the assorted over hatch special. I now have a few NN. I don't know why but I did not even think of them being in the assortment. DH always pokes fun at the NN chickens. I wonder what he will say now. The children have not seen our NN chicks yet. It should be interesting.
My daughter likes the NN, but then she likes anything wierd or unusual

We are getting close too!

So I was just out in the coop taking a big bag of veggies to the crew for a treat when Peanut Butter attacked me again. He's the roo on my avatar and I kept him because he was so sweet. Now he's close to a year and just getting to be mean. I picked him up by his tail, turned him over on his back and cradled him for a couple of minutes talking nicely about this and that (mostly how I have raised him and nursed him and freezer camp) and for my trouble, he bit me. I think he understood the part about freezer camp. I love having a rooster but what are the odds he will settle down? If he attacks my 4 year old again I'm not sure we can keep working with him.
Just get rid of him. I've never known a mean one to get much better, no matter what you do. I've gotten them to leave me alone, but they will still go after other people, plus I have to keep them in line all the time, just not worth it.

I got 6 new babies from Rural King in Bloomington today. 2 New Hampshire Reds, 2 Black Jersey Giants, and 2 Gold Laced Wyandots.

Rural king in Terre Haute has some chicks that already are mostly feathered in, Guess people are buying to many yet.
Okay, my turn.

Pictures of the girls! (And Po, of course!) Firstly, these girls turned 9 months old on Wednesday, but things have been crazy and I forgot. So these pictures are from today, 9 months and 2 days old.

I would have to say my most docile breed are my white rocks. They don't have a care in the world, well except that you give them a lot of food. They eat a lot.
You should try Buckeye, I've never had such a friendly breed !!!

Missing you guys, things are nuts again. This is going to be our worst year for my family, MIL had hip replacement.
Dad was in hospital, still waiting for his valve, so he can have the surgery.
My sister had gall bladder out, brother had the heart attack & bypasses.
Now mom had a bad fall, and has to have knee surgery!

I am wupped. I know I have a few eggs, frozen in the boxes. All I am doing is just feeding, watering and driving away.
Really, really ready for this ice and snow to go away.

It may have been me with the feeders. Here is what I am going to build to stop the birds.

Wow, that is a lot for one year.  My Dh had outpatient surgery in the summer and some other heath issues but nothing that required an overnight hospital stay.  I hope your sister was able to have the belly button cut instead of the older 6 inch belly cut to remove the gall bladder.    As for the snow and ice, I'm with you, it needs to go.  I was so looking forward to the temps staying above freezing during the days but the forecast is changing yet again.

I like your waterer description.  For now we have heated dog bowls, but they are in the coops.

Lots of fun and stress with setting eggs.  What kind did you set?  Also what incubator are you using?

I have been doing some small staggered hatches and getting some hatchery orders in.  My basement is becoming full of various brooder boxes.   I keep wanting to move all of the chicks outside then snow comes or arctic temps.

I miss my basement!! There's not really a good spot in this house to have chicks!

I miss my attached garage. We signed up to get our house remodeled and somehow half of the stuff did not get done before the contractor was asking for more money. The attached garage is one of the unfinished areas. We are still using it just not for the car.

I was just sitting here, pretty much being bored, and wondering....if when I get my chicks grown enough t gointo the run/coop with the adults and the Silkies to the point they can go out in their pen...can I open the pens of both at th same time to go out t forage?
minmin~ I'll be in the same situation since I have silkie and orp chicks. Basically, you just have to slowly introduce both flocks. When I introduced my last two orps to the flock last summer, first I put the orp chicks in a tractor in the yard. When my hens noticed them, they walked around the tractor, but the only one who was mad was of course Nene, my RIR. We did that routine for several days, and then when I let the orps out of the tractor for a while each day, I supervised the whole time. Then, when decided to move them into the hens' coop at night, I put the orps in the run side of the coop, which has a perch, and I blocked that side of with a large folded dog kennel (their former brooder). The bars of the kennel allowed them to all see each other. Over a few weeks time, I gradually left a bigger opening until I finally removed the cage. At first when they free-ranged during the day, they'd stay in two groups, but eventually they joined forces.

I haven't had silkies before, so I'm not sure if there's any difference in introducing them to the hens since silkies look so different. I have a small coop that I have for an emergency quarantine that I thought about using for the silkies, but since I have Bonbon, my chocolate orp, in with the LF hens, I might just see if they'll all adjust to the big coop.
