INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I know one person who raises BSFL for her chickens during the summer but she doesn't feed them during the summer. She figures that they can get their own during the summer so she freezes them then feeds them out in the winter for an animal protein source during winter.

Just a thought that you could possibly freeze some of the mealworms from the summer for winter feed.

I'm not sure if we have the BSF here. We're right on the line of where they quit but I would like to see if I could figure out a BSF container and see if I could get some of those going to save back for the winter.

~~Thunder, Lightning, pouring rain, and we are still SNOW covered. ONLY IN INDIANA !!!!!

~~Between the snow and rain there is so much water it is running in our basement door, I've been trying to dig a trench, but not easy as the ground is still frozen.

But the geese and ducks are loving it !!

If at all possible...I'd encourage you to get some wood chips rather than sand. You might be able to contact some of the tree services even at this time of year and track some down for a reasonable price if not free.

In the summer they'll often bring them to you free when they're working in your area if you call around. Since they're not working on chipping much in the winter you may have to pay for some but they are well worth it.

If you get them now, just be sure they aren't treated with anything! You want just plain wood chips with nothing on them.

The wood chips will make a great deep litter in your run that will keep the soil healthy for the chickens and also prevents what you're going through right now.

I'm contemplating placing an order for pullets soon with Strombergs.  There's a minimum of 25 chicks before April and also a breed minimum of 5.  The breeds I'm thinking of are speckled sussex, blue laced red wyandotte, mottled java, salmon favorelle and California white.  I think I may only keep about 3 of each though.  If I do get an order placed in the next couple weeks would any of you be interested in the extra pullets?

Ooo I wish I was closer to you! I'm looking to add some blue laced reds and salmon favorelles!
