Once I get the walls done and roof started, I feel like I am done. I like doing all the details. I bought these cute little latches for my next project, but don't have all the wood yet lol

Your story made me laugh. I was waiting for the part where you would say something about your DH being mad, but instead you say he picks out a chick lol. Congrats on the new chicks! It makes me mad when I see dead chicks in the bin, no food, no water, pasty butts, etc. (not neccissarily all at once, but in general)

Hi,
Im new to this site, I am from danville IN. We are looking for a blue laced red wynodette, If anyone knows where I could pick one up local that would be great

Progress!

She was more helpful than I expected.

The color is "Cherry Soda." They had a photo of a red barn this color and I was sold. :)

I guess I will paint the trim white, and then I'll probably paint "Diva Shack" over the door.

If I get *real crazy* I might paint a quilt design on the outer "people door." Why not?

Ran out of paint to do the whole thing.

Tomorrow, more paint! And then we'll see what we can do with all this "stuff."

The pile of boards above and the bunk bed frame are from an IKEA bunk bed that we decided wasn't worth reassembling. I'm going to use them to make my raised beds, which will go around the run (until I run out of wood to build them).

Still need to get a saw to cut the pop door, and do a little waterproofing inside the coop, itself. Thinking about putting some linoleum down, too. Oh, and need the aluminum for the roof on the run. Don't know how long it will take me to do all the "extras" like my rain barrel & solar lights, but at least I hope to have the run ready by the time the chicks will be big enough to go out for good!
Looking fantastic, and I love the color!

Quote: X2!!! I love my lil NN hen. She is the first on my shoulder when I visit my mixed coop. They are a definite future plan here.

Sheeting on, I would start laying shingles but we are having company over for dinner. But tomorrow it should be a complete roof with Bark brown shingles!! I got my oldest chicks in the small coop getting the hang of life outside the brooder!
Looks wonderful! Cant believe how fast its going, great job

Is anyone else tired of seeing my garden hose in the pics? Lol I know I am. I'm just never focused on it when I'm out working.
LOL nope, familiar sight here when I work on stuff, as well as extension cords. Most of our battery powered tools are old and worn out.

I have white chinese geese already laying/breeding i have 2 pairs for $45 a pair and the extra ganders are $15 each. I also have 3 drake ducks 1 khaki 1 cayuga and 1 2nd gen golden hybrid (looks like rouen) for $5 each. All birds are free range and all together we have chickens, ducks, geese, guineas and a turkey all running together so they are all used to other birds as well as dogs, cats, pigs, and horses.
Willing to trade for a pair of Narragansett turkeys (will consider other heritage breeds as well) pair of either american buff geese or pair of pilgrim geese or possibly saddleback pomeranian geese. Also interested in muscovy hens ( prefer chocolate but will consider all) or mille fleur d'uccle bantam hens and possibly 1 roo. Let me know if interested or what you have

Are salmon faverolles usually this different in coloring at one month? I have two that are pretty dark, and one really white one with full feet, the other two either have new plumage growing or hardly any at all, they were all supposed to be pullets

They are adorable!

Today MUST be the day. It must, it must.

Sounds like great weather for spring cleaning, too. I plan on doing deep litter, too. Would you mind possibly sharing some before and after pics so I have some idea what I'm in for?
leslea ~ Here's some basic info: Natural Chicken Keeping: Deep Litter Method
My coop/run has a dirt floor with rocks. I added fresh mulch (from my neighbor's tree that had to be removed), occasional pine shavings, and coarse sand.
As far as cleaning, it's not a big deal as long as you wear a mask and gloves. I do a complete cleaning in the fall and spring. I took a few photos as requested.
This is the part of the coop/run that I especially wanted to clean because I moved my five chicks there after I cleaned it, and I sectioned it off from the rest of the coop with screens.
The hardware cloth "windows" are usually open during warm months, but they are still covered with clear vinyl (and there's some of my supplies leaning up against the coop). My coop is bolted to the back of the garage, so that's what the brick wall is (and there's even a real window between the garage and coop).

I used a snow shovel to remove large amounts of litter, which I put in garbage bags to transport to my compost.
I removed the perch and scrubbed it with vinegar, water, and a little Dawn. Rinsed it and put in the sun to dry.

I used a garden rake to dig up some new dirt from the bottom, which I mixed in with the old litter that I was keeping.

I also took a brush and a soft duster to clean off dust, cobwebs, and dirt from walls, rafters, hardware wire, etc.
I used a handheld steamer to go over all of the parts that I dusted and cleaned. It's not necessary to do that, but I had bought one when Tweedy had scaly leg mites.

I added some fresh pine shavings-- more than usual since the chicks were going to start sleeping there.
Sweet PDZ is mixed in as needed for odor control.

I plan to add more coarse sand, and I'm wondering about using sand pebbles. Does anyone who uses sand solely as deep litter or as an addition to deep litter have any insights/comments? I googled some options:

Tip: It is much less expensive per pound if purchased at a crushed stone quarry type of business, but I didn't need a huge quantity. CRSelvey purchased some from a quarry if anyone is interested in her experience.

So, here are my three Silkies and English Orpington Roo and Pullet after their new "bedroom" was ready. My DH and I have checked on them numerous times, and they are always standing up like, "We're ready to go back to our nice bedroom in the house. These accommodations are a bit rustic." I hope they decide to get some sleep!

Btw, I had to use a clamp light in that space, but it is wrapped with wire to hold all of the components together and the wire is wrapped around to secure it to a cross beam, plus I have wire wrapped around the guard to ensure that the bulb can't fall out. I have so much wire wrapped around that it looks like some kind of modern art sculpture. haha Meanwhile, my six hens are in the box part of the coop, and they didn't seem to care about the chicks, but they commented amongst themselves about the screens blocking that section. Not sure what they said, but they usually don't care for my redecorating ideas.
