INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Hehehehe I love free stuff! Got 1 of the 2 "new" sheds home. Hoping to get it set in place tomorrow! Very pleased to get it, and couldn't be soon enough. My BR turkey hen is broody
barnie.gif
I have 2 fake eggs in her chosen nest. Well, she is intent on hatching them, and is NOT pleased seeing my hands going under her. Came out with 2 fake eggs, last 2 days now. Sneak in there after dark tonight and, yep! on the nest. Now to break the broody, I want eggs!
rant.gif
I have less than a dozen set so far. UGH! Not a hint of eggs from my 2nd hen, or the BBW I kept that is so tiny. Snoodles, my young tom, is strutting and gobbling every time he hears the big tom!
Keeping the 2 groups separate since that's 2 lines to work from. He is very watchful of little Snickers, but not interested in the BBW hen at all yet.
Getting so many Pekin eggs, I put a dozen in the fridge today for cooking. Muscovy's are definitely laying, and 2nd guinea egg today also. And I have robins EVERYWHERE! YAY Spring
lol.png

I was bad!!! Very very bad!!!! Went to TSC and yep you guessed it came home with 6 chicks, 2 feather legged batmans 2 clean legged batmans and 2 Reds, don't know what any of them are... I'm thinking the 2 feather legged are Cochin's, ???? and heard of reds but never had any so dont know anything about them.
1 of the little batmans ( clean legged ) is screaming as loud as she can and I dont know why, got food water heat and clean bedding and friends... so ?????
idunno.gif
but I know no one is going to go to sleep tonight!!! its one that DH picked out.. go figure.
I tried to bring a Not so good one home but they wouldn't let me said they had a recovery tank to put it in and I found a dead STIFF chick in with them too, just burns my butt that no one is watching these chicks. I mean..... dang STIFF... how does that happen??
rant.gif

I will get pic's up tomorrow after they calm down a bit.
I have seen some awful stuff, entire bins of chicks pasted up and no water in sight, ugh! Its very upsetting!
I think it falls on the manager educating employees. And unfortunately, some are just not as educated on animal care as others. What is common sense to one person, another has no clue and may not want to learn either.
Congrats on your chicken math, I'd say you are well on your way to obsessed like the rest of us

Fantastic post, and thanks for the step by step! I agree, its a great way to manage coop cleaning.
I bet the babies will LOVE the new digs once they settle in, and appreciate your decorating too

Seems like someone just posted a photo of one, but not sure if it was for sale. Click on the Indiana Members' List link at the bottom of this post, and you can look at the list to find people in your area who might have what you need. Please look on page 2510, post 25095 for more info about our great Indiana thread!
It's going to be so nice outside today and tomorrow, but not too warm. How warm does it need to be for my 4 week chicks out?
Primal Momma ~ Do you mean out for the day or out for good/nights? It also can depend on breed. Advice is always given that chickens can't cope with big changes in temperature either direction-- from warm to cold or cold to warm, but it's difficult to find any information about how many degrees difference that they can tolerate! I'd say that the younger they are, the more careful you should be to do gradual temperature changes. If you just want to take them outside for awhile, they should be supervised and watched for any signs of distress. If you have them in a chicken tractor or fenced area, make sure there's a sideways box or a covered part where they can go to feel safe, be protected from wind, and direct sun if needed. Have food and water available even if you're just out for an hour. If you move them into a coop, you'll need to have a heat lamp since nights are still cold. Please see page 2404, post 24036 for information about heat lamp safety.
Hi, everyone. I am in need of a Salmon Faverolle roo. Preferably young. Mine was lost in shipping. So, now, I have lonely young ladies with no boyfriend. Thanks everyone.
tntbell ~ Oh no! Hope someone can help.
leslea ~ You made great progress! And it seemed like so long until May when your chickens arrive, but it's worked out well considering the cold spring temps we've been having.
bradselig ~ You're so generous to offer your Chicken Train services! I'd be fighting for a blue Cochin, but I currently have five blue chicks.
wink.png
Thanks for all you do to help our members out!
jsummers ~ Lovely ducks and geese!

The geese look great! I may have a few BA hens for you, am rethinking some of the flock for breeding pens. Will let you know and text you tomorrow if we can bring your new guinea hen over. (her name is Prissy, she is a miss priss :lau )

They are adorable!
Love the beards!
Ok i will let youlnow when will be a good time. Im hoping the turkey hen leaves early enough that i can go to goodwill. Will text you when home! Cant wait to see her and cant wait for you to see bacon! Everyone is so happy here since the weather is finally breaking it seems! Geese were irritated we invaded their space to burn the yard! Fire was great wish you could have made it!

Any ideas on these chicks? They were both in the straight run bantam. The black one was larger than all the other bantams, but I thought I would give it a try.

The little yellow one is soooo cute. By far the smallest chick have ever held.

OUR INDIANA BYC'ERS CHICKEN FEST 2014.. IMPORTANT!
PLEASE, seriously, take a second and think about what works for you!

I have been looking at ideas for a while now. What I can offer is what I can access with little cost.
The private campground we have a lot at opens next weekend, hoping to catch the owner and discuss a possible chicken fest there!
The tentative location is Liberty, IN (east central Indiana)
Now that the owner's grandson is selling brown eggs at camp, I betcha he might just go for it! On that note....
I am thinking of 2 topics if there is enough interest. Nothing is set in stone, and depends on the campground owner's reply.
Possibly a chicken train, or swap day also!
(I plan to possibly bribe Dave, the owner with Quail eggs too lol. A Lil birdie told me he loves them pickled
wink.png
)
My ideas:
1.
Processing Quail, different methods etc. and/or Quail egg taste test! The "city life" answer to fresh eggs daily!
2. Fermenting feed, if anyone hasn't tried it, why its so beneficial. Different methods and ideas!
3. Poultry swap/trade/etc! Prearranged only between members, owners will be responsible for their birds and their care.
Please, shout out your thoughts or PM me! We will probably be able to reserve the barn for a good part of the morning and afternoon.
Whats everyone's thoughts, ideas, really want to learn something hands on? Or do we just want to chat, laugh and get to know each other?
What month is better for everyone to avoid conflicting kid's sport events, racing (like Indy 500, brickyard) Colts events, more...
I like a pitch in idea, bring own drinks and a dish (no alcoholic beverages please, out of respect for the children)
There is a playground next to the barn also. I want children to feel welcome, and have a family event so everyone has a good time.
There are a few family friendly state park campgrounds very close by, and they rate from primitive tent camping to grade A septic and water on site.
Its a very rewarding experience to camp, hike, fish or just enjoy the quiet with your family. I have camped with just a sleeping bag up to a big motor home. its just awesome watching the critters at night, and Bald Eagles flying over the lake during the day.
DH and I visited the state parks there often when the kids were young. Fishing is fantastic, and really fun for the kids, lots of bluegills. The smile on the faces when they "got one!" makes it worth the effort.

Quote: LOL the geese hate changes. They shriek if you change a feed bowl!
I really wanted to make it over
sad.png
DH fell asleep in his chair, so i knew we were done
lau.gif

Hope we get to come over and just sit by the fire soon. I bet Bacon is flat HUGE! Wilbur is awesome, I will hate seeing him go.
Yorks are by far the best pigs IMO, they are timid as babies but so sweet and gentle as they mature.
Still want to add some sows and a good boar! Love how they just want a back scratch, or an ear rub.
We have to get the 2nd shed tomorrow. Its a rental property, so they want to have the yard clean by the 1st to rent out.
2nd shed is all solid wood construction so its a lot more to get moved.

Any ideas on these chicks? They were both in the straight run bantam. The black one was larger than all the other bantams, but I thought I would give it a try.

left is a Barred rock, but looks to be a pullet and that's a really good hen.. Right looks like an OEGB, very sweet bird if you socialize them a lot as chicks, I love mine. They are very social friendly bird and lay a nice sized egg.

that all sounds great to me I cant wait to go to my first Chicken Fest, we need T-shirts made up. maybe someone can have them made and sell thm to help cover cost of the barn rental or something???

I'm still new to the different breeds but the dark one looks like a BR to me?? And I have no ideal on the other. They are cute, as all chicks are, IMO.

I know but like you still upsets me, I got 2 pasty butts in the bunch, DH says he cant take me any where without coming home with sick or injured critters..
idunno.gif
Just cant help it. Have 2 ( not the pasty butt ones ) that I just don't know if they are going to make it. VERY tiny and I have not seen them move from the spot I put them in? Or maybe I just put them in a real good spot. but all they have done is sleep and the 1 keeps peeping, loudly. DH wants to grip about it ( we have not got a wink of sleep ) but its 1 that he picked out... lol It is 4:16 am right now, not unusual for me to be up checking on critters or feeding baby goat, but DH normally sleeps through the night. and he will be a Grumpy Gus all day now. and we re going to pick up 7 Does and 4 kids and buck today and 3 of them are said to be wild, so this is not going to be a fun day...
barnie.gif

LOL I wish. I have a lot I want to do to it yet. I think im getting a little to fancy with it now. It was supposed to be a simple pallet coop when I started thinking of this project
th.gif
but just think your birds will love it and the coop it going up fast. When you start something you finish it that's for sure. Congrats you are doing a great job.

Your story made me laugh. I was waiting for the part where you would say something about your DH being mad, but instead you say he picks out a chick lol. Congrats on the new chicks! It makes me mad when I see dead chicks in the bin, no food, no water, pasty butts, etc. (not neccissarily all at once, but in general)
lol he picked out " 2 " and 1 of them is keeping us both up... this makes me 31 chicks and 8 adults and BCM on order from last winter due in 3 weeks OMG where am I going to put them all... lol but I do have to rehome some. Too many Roo's.

BLRW are beautiful birds, good luck.

leslea ~ Here's some basic info: Natural Chicken Keeping: Deep Litter Method
My coop/run has a dirt floor with rocks. I added fresh mulch (from my neighbor's tree that had to be removed), occasional pine shavings, and coarse sand.
As far as cleaning, it's not a big deal as long as you wear a mask and gloves. I do a complete cleaning in the fall and spring. I took a few photos as requested.
This is the part of the coop/run that I especially wanted to clean because I moved my five chicks there after I cleaned it, and I sectioned it off from the rest of the coop with screens.
The hardware cloth "windows" are usually open during warm months, but they are still covered with clear vinyl (and there's some of my supplies leaning up against the coop). My coop is bolted to the back of the garage, so that's what the brick wall is (and there's even a real window between the garage and coop).

I used a snow shovel to remove large amounts of litter, which I put in garbage bags to transport to my compost.
I removed the perch and scrubbed it with vinegar, water, and a little Dawn. Rinsed it and put in the sun to dry.

I used a garden rake to dig up some new dirt from the bottom, which I mixed in with the old litter that I was keeping.

I also took a brush and a soft duster to clean off dust, cobwebs, and dirt from walls, rafters, hardware wire, etc.
I used a handheld steamer to go over all of the parts that I dusted and cleaned. It's not necessary to do that, but I had bought one when Tweedy had scaly leg mites.

I added some fresh pine shavings-- more than usual since the chicks were going to start sleeping there.
Sweet PDZ is mixed in as needed for odor control.

I plan to add more coarse sand, and I'm wondering about using sand pebbles. Does anyone who uses sand solely as deep litter or as an addition to deep litter have any insights/comments? I googled some options:

Tip: It is much less expensive per pound if purchased at a crushed stone quarry type of business, but I didn't need a huge quantity. CRSelvey purchased some from a quarry if anyone is interested in her experience.

So, here are my three Silkies and English Orpington Roo and Pullet after their new "bedroom" was ready. My DH and I have checked on them numerous times, and they are always standing up like, "We're ready to go back to our nice bedroom in the house. These accommodations are a bit rustic." I hope they decide to get some sleep!

Btw, I had to use a clamp light in that space, but it is wrapped with wire to hold all of the components together and the wire is wrapped around to secure it to a cross beam, plus I have wire wrapped around the guard to ensure that the bulb can't fall out. I have so much wire wrapped around that it looks like some kind of modern art sculpture. haha Meanwhile, my six hens are in the box part of the coop, and they didn't seem to care about the chicks, but they commented amongst themselves about the screens blocking that section. Not sure what they said, but they usually don't care for my redecorating ideas.
great job, and thanks for the steamer ideal, wish I could have thought of that when I was striping my coop and sanitizing everything. oh well now I know.
thumbsup.gif

I have white chinese geese already laying/breeding i have 2 pairs for $45 a pair and the extra ganders are $15 each. I also have 3 drake ducks 1 khaki 1 cayuga and 1 2nd gen golden hybrid (looks like rouen) for $5 each. All birds are free range and all together we have chickens, ducks, geese, guineas and a turkey all running together so they are all used to other birds as well as dogs, cats, pigs, and horses.
Willing to trade for a pair of Narragansett turkeys (will consider other heritage breeds as well) pair of either american buff geese or pair of pilgrim geese or possibly saddleback pomeranian geese. Also interested in muscovy hens ( prefer chocolate but will consider all) or mille fleur d'uccle bantam hens and possibly 1 roo. Let me know if interested or what you have
smile.png
Can email [email protected] to get quick response.
pretty birds
love.gif

Are salmon faverolles usually this different in coloring at one month? I have two that are pretty dark, and one really white one with full feet, the other two either have new plumage growing or hardly any at all, they were all supposed to be pullets
1 of my wish list birds,
droolin.gif
. I think they are Awesome.

Is anyone else tired of seeing my garden hose in the pics? Lol I know I am. I'm just never focused on it when I'm out working.
My garden hose is always out, too much to roll and unroll every other day. I have a long way to get water to horses, goats and chickens... and my dogs when they are outside. Just less work if I just leave it out. I'm just lazy I guess.

Wanted to welcome any new members and posters I may have missed
frow.gif

Been crazy busy working on the property. Lot of trees down, have a huge cottonwood to take out where the new coops will be going.
The tree is just massive, and the branches alone make a normal sized tree. Dreading the work involved to clear it.
Its rotting out, and looks hollow so it has to go before it falls on the house.
Started seedlings, have tomato, peppers, squash, cukes, pumpkin and a lot of other usual seeds.
Several tree seeds. We are adding pecan, pawpaw, apple, pear and cherry.
First Muscovy egg yesterday, and first guinea egg today
celebrate.gif

Everything is now laying but the peas, I won't know for another year what I have, cocks, or hens.
They are such a quiet graceful bird, love to watch them. ( I know, wait til they are mature
barnie.gif
)
Snoodles & Snickers my young BR turkey tom & hen are their best buddies with the peas, they all grew up together.

I have actually almost filled the sportsman.. no kidding. Goose eggs take a lot of room! Lots of pekin eggs too.
My Embden pairs are looking 100% fertility, about 90% on the Chinese. My Africans just haven't figured it out yet, goofy things.
One of my lavender orp hens has laid 2 days straight! Will be doing fertility checks this week! Finally!!!
Not seeing the rooster very active so I may have to swap him out. I kept 4 roosters I liked for their color, combs, size and temperament.
Out of the group of 15 I bought, I had 3 hens. Lost one to the fox last year, so these 2 are really precious to me.
No hen luck on that group!
We have been working on our yards too so know the feeling. Congrats on your eggs and good luck with your Hatch

Hi, everyone. I am in need of a Salmon Faverolle roo. Preferably young. Mine was lost in shipping. So, now, I have lonely young ladies with no boyfriend. Thanks everyone.
Sorry to hear that, good luck at finding a replacement
