INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Well my hatch isn't finished but is an exciting one! I have silkies, legbars, a single rhodebar pullet, an orloff, bantam chocolate orp, partridge barthuhners, and jubilee orps currently hatched! A few more eggs to go! It's neat seeing all the different breeds and being able to tell them apart!

MY BABIES MADE IT!!!!! I think 2 are permanently mentally handicapped from the long transit heh. The woman called at 550 and I was there at 603 to pick them up. She let me get them 2 hours before the post office opened lol. Super nice woman. The manager is a real jerk though.

Everyone is alive and eating and drinking well. I got a very nice mix of colors, one of the brahmas looks like it's going to be a stunningly gorgeous splash. They're all drinking well...and trying to eat their poo. I didn't take pictures cause I wanted to let them get settled after that long trip. I'm so happy. I can't keep them all but I don't know how I can possibly give any up either. Bah. Just ask ellmay about my chicken math problem lol.

Anyway I also got a tiny bit of work done on the coop but I am hoping to get it done by the end of the weekend. I bought a staple gun thing to put the floor and hardware fabric on the windows and for the trim. It's not pneumatic. I also got some peel and stick shelf cover to go on the removable poop shelves and zip ties for the run. I got a little bit of trim painted. Not sure I'm happy with the trim color I picked but too late now.

Also got Petes birthday present, thank goodness. So we did cake and presents last night.

Pginsber I'm so happy you and your silkie are getting on. I might have some extra material for you to use to handicap your coop lol.

I'm gonna post a request in the indy Co op, but does anyone wanna work on the shed this weekend with me? I will make sure to have the cookies and drinks ready beforehand. And the kids say thanks to everyone who left before the cookies arrived lol.

What breeds do you plan on having?

So far I should have a barnyard mix (of what, I don't know, but she's a brown-layer), two golden comets, two black australorps, and possibly an easter egger. I don't think any of them are supposed to be flighty breeds. In the future, I plan to trend toward the black aussies, and possibly add some cornish x meat birds once I'm ready to take on chicks.

Our coop is finally done!!!! Well..not totally done, but done enough to finally move the chicks in this afternoon when it warms up a bit. We still need to add the upper roosts, nest boxes, finish the automatic pop doors ( which I'm not worried about since I will leave them in the coop for a week before I let them use the runs anyway) and we still haven't done the siding. The siding is reclaimed wood from a neighbor's old barn we are tearing apart, so that may take a couple more weekends But it will look awesome! :) YAY for no more chickens in my garage!! I desperately need that space for my garden plants as they are taking over my whole house. Is plant math a "thing" too? I will have to get some pictures of the coop before the birds get in there and commerce pooping all over the place.

Oh yes. It certainly is. I encourage my wife's plant math, because the more plants she wants, the more hideous poisonous yew bushes I get to rip out and burn at the stake.

Congratulations on the coop!

We ripped out a bunch of yews last fall. We left them the first year we were here because we just had too many other projects going on, but I am so glad to have them gone! My husband doesnt know it yet, but this year a good deal of our "landscaping" all around the house will be edible plants because I seriously overdid it and even with two large gardens, there just wont be enough room for everything :)

Okay, little news update!

All six of the EE's are enjoying there new place outside, my dad and I built a red neck architecture coop/grow out pen for them on Saturday and I'm very proud of it. I'll have to post some pics of the coop and the chicks and some funky eggs I've been getting :)

Also, thanks for all the advice, Mother2hens about my injured hen. She is looking relatively better, I'm gonna have to keep spraying her with that stuff. Lol I will admit I felt mildly foolish when you pointed out how chickens hide their injuries. I completely forgot about that and felt so dumb :) I guess one can know a lot and still not know enough. Anyway I appreciate it thanks a lot!

I heard someone say something about a chicken fest? Id love to go if its set in stone. Now I just need a date to set down with my parents so we can clear a calender and come/go to it! But its a great idea!

Also, my Dad is bugging me about a turkey. Does anyone have any turkey hens or poults they could be willing to sell? Only trick is my dad wants 'wild looking turkey'. :D

That's kind of what I thought; I just couldn't find a straight answer searching the coop building areas of the forums. Esp. since I'm not planning on clipping wings if I can help it.

Maybe that's another good question to ask - does everyone here clip wings? Does anyone not? My chickens will spend most of their time in the coop and the run, and then in a tractor once I build one. They might get an hour on really nice days of free time in the back yard, but that will be the exception, so I'm thinking it won't be an issue. Opinions?

I only clip the wings of birds that have a tendency to fly over the fence. If you do clip their wings only do one side. This makes them unbalanced and they will spiral back to the ground. If you clip both sides they get lift from both sides and can fly to some extent even though it is harder for them to do so.

I'll have poults starting this weekend, but they aren't 'wild looking'. They are Royal Palm and Royal Palm/Narragansett.
