INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

can anyone tell me anything about Silver Sebrights? Seems DH picked out one at TSC and I no nothing about them, and are they game birds and if so will I be able to put it in with my flock? I got a game pair not too long ago and the Roo beat the snot out of everyone.

I know the pic is bad, will try and get better ones tomorrow, sorry the 1 chick is gray and white don't know what it could be do you?

[to pipd] I've heard beekeeping is popular in Fort Wayne, they hold a school there once a year for people to get certified and that's how my DH got his. Honeybees are not aggressive but they can be curious. Mostly they are busy and don't want to bother with getting in your way. So winter, spring and summer they are pretty chill. In the fall though, if you get close to the hive, you will hear them buzz loudly and if you enter the hive without protection, don't say I didn't warn you! Outside of fall I don't always wear protection-just hang out with shorts, tank, flip flops or whatever. They may land by or near you to check you out but as long as you don't have dark clothes, strong perfume or shiny metal on, they move on quickly.

You know how watching chickens can be therapeutic and very relaxing? It is easy to go into a meditative state of mind while watching chickens and honeybees. Honeybees are very methodical, you can watch the inner workings of the hive just by sitting in front of the hive for a while. Not that I'm laying down in full gear for hours on end, but they are really cool to watch. I'd say your neighbor is pretty normal. :)

I saw this on FB in regards to the decision and had to take a screenshot to share. What is this disease Edna is referring to? Anyone else want to move in next door to her with their flock just to show how amazing and non-smelly chickens can be?

atrueb00 ~ Sorry you've been sick! I bet that's especially frustrating this time of year. Thanks for sharing the bee info -- very interesting about Bee TV being relaxing! It was also interesting to read the Goshen chicken ordinance info that you and Peaceful Walls posted.

Geez, people like "Edna" who pass along misinformation make me crazy! Histoplasmosis is a fungus found in soil. Like other plants, its spores become airborne and can be inhaled by humans and animals. Most people have been exposed to histoplasmosis at one time or another during their lives and have not had symptoms. It typically affects those who already have lung problems or who have poor immune systems.
It is NOT transmitted from infected person to person or infected animal to person or animal. It's an airborne fungus.

Wow! Things have moved quickly for us in less than 48 hours. Mom had her assessment for nursing home qualification Monday morning, by Tuesday morning everything -- all paperwork -- was in the hands of the nursing home and they had a room assigned to her! Yesterday afternoon we moved her there. Dad is so relieved, but there's still a lot to be done yet this next month. At least we got this accomplished!
Peaceful Walls ~ As I mentioned before, it was such a stress reliever when my Dad who had dementia moved to a dementia care center where professionals could care for him 24/7. It just gets to be too much responsibility to care for someone with dementia when you also have jobs and other family members to care for. It takes a team, and it's good to be a part of that team. I'm glad to hear that things are going more smoothly than you had anticipated.

tiffmw10 & TheBrumstead ~ Welcome to the Indiana Thread!
About the Indiana Thread~
To participate on the Indiana Thread, we ask that you follow byc.com’s rules for family-friendly posts. We have members of all ages. Our thread is known for being very active, and our members are supportive, respectful of each other’s opinions, interesting, and fun! The Indiana Thread is a diverse group of fantastic members who range from newbies to experienced chicken owners, those who raise chickens for healthful food, and others who enjoy chickens as pets. Please post messages and photos as often as you like! Posts are not limited to the topic of chickens. There is no such thing as a “dumb” question! Whatever your questions may be, we likely have members who can help you.

Do you want to be listed on the Indiana BYC Members’ List?
“Being a member of this thread” just means adding your screen name and flock info, which can be helpful because the list is a spreadsheet format that lets you sort the list by breed, county, or other category. It’s an easy way to find other members who have the same breed you have or who live in a nearby county, etc.

Click on the link (Indiana BYC Members’ List) located below my signature to view the Indiana page. Just look at the bottom of the list page for sorting options.

If you’d like to be added, send a PM (personal message) by simply placing your cursor over my screen name: Mother2Hens, and you will see “Send a PM.” bradselig and CRSelvey (Cheryl) actually add the info, so you can PM either one of them directly, too-- whatever is the easiest for you. A personal message ensures that your info is added. Please send your screen name, county, and city. Also include the following information about each member of your flock: List each species (chicken, duck, etc.), breed (Barred Rock, Blue Cochin, etc.), is it a LF (Large Fowl) or Bantam? If you breed, please include the species. If you have any questions about this thread, please PM jchny2000 (Janet) who is the founder (thread starter) of this group.

Indiana County Map for instant member location/Avatars
If anyone would like a map of your county, like the one on my avatar, I will be happy to provide one. If someone wants a combo map and a chicken or an animal for your avatar, I can put that together for you, just PM me. When I read posts, many times I think “Now where are they from?” I look at the city and still have no idea what part of the state they’re from. The map icon with the county in red because you could quickly glance and see where the member who is posting is from. These avatars are not required-- they are just a free service if you’re interested.

Avatar Updates
If members would like me to change the photo(s) on their avatars, just PM me. Someone might have a picture of a chick that has grown into a hen (or a roo!) and would like to update the photo or someone might like something totally different.

So, I thought I was done building. Then I was looking around my cleaned-out coop, imagining chickens living in it and deciding where to put the nest boxes, and it occurred to me that I don't have a ramp up to the roost. The roost and poop board are about 3 feet off the ground, it used to be an 8-foot work bench. Do you think the chickens really need a ramp to get up there, or can they just flap up that high?

My simplest solution is that this shed came with a wood ladder that I don't plan on using; it's too old and rickety. If I lean it on the roost, it's a good gentle angle, but the rungs are a foot apart - would that serve the birds who don't want to just fly up and down?

I'll try to post pics later, I know that will tell the tale more effectively.

They will fly up. My loet roost is 3 ft then I have one at 4, 5, and 6. Everyone flies up there all by themselves. I have one Cochin who sleeps on the floor, but the others don't

That's kind of what I thought; I just couldn't find a straight answer searching the coop building areas of the forums. Esp. since I'm not planning on clipping wings if I can help it.

Maybe that's another good question to ask - does everyone here clip wings? Does anyone not? My chickens will spend most of their time in the coop and the run, and then in a tractor once I build one. They might get an hour on really nice days of free time in the back yard, but that will be the exception, so I'm thinking it won't be an issue. Opinions?

My run is covered and I selected non-flighty breeds, so I don't clip any wings. What breeds do you plan on having? If it's big fat ones, little bitty tiny ones or silkies, certainly a non-issue. Leghorns, Spitzhaubens, Campines, Icelandics, etc...you might have something to consider. On the flip side, if they're free-ranging, wouldn't the ability to fly a bit come in handy in a predator situation?

CCCCCCChickens x2 on the roost height. They will get up there just fine (again--as long as you don't have silkies).

Sorry about the emphasis on silkies. I had no intention of ever having a silkie, but since one has magically arrived in our home, I'm learning lots about them. It's like I have to make everything in my LF coop handicapped-accessible to meet Silkie needs.
