INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Okay, so I was really bummed when I go ton here b/c our playhouse to turn into a coop has fallen thru. They finally gave us the dimensions today. It is 8 feet 9 inches wide. Anything over 8 feet 6 inches wide has to have a special permit. We could not use a flat bed tow truck we would have to hired a flat bed truck and jump through lots of hoops to get proper permits to transport it b/c of width as well as height. Permits take time AND they want it gone this weekend - the only way to do that is take it apart and reassemble, which kinda negates the idea of starting with a pre-assembled building to make things easier!! So now we are back to building the big coop. Sigh.

So then I get on here and read the rezoning Indy stuff and now I have gone from bummed to downright MAD! My biggest concern is that we start out with seemingly reasonable restrictions and then restriction upon restriction slowly gets added.

I am so tired and all worked up now! I need to go try to sleep.

I am going to go look at the pictures peacefulwalls posted. Pictures of chickens make me happy!

I am sorry it didn't work out, don't give up tho! We have found many free sheds etc. An even better one will come along

Wow what cuties!

Still looking for some hatching eggs in Southwestern Indiana. Preferably non-hatchery, pure bred standard size chickens. I like dual purpose chickens, but I would be willing to consider anything! Please let me know if you have anything you would sell. I live 30 min north of Evansville. I am willing to drive a bit to pick these up.

Send me a PM!

Thanks!
If an egg train can be worked out I am willing to throw in some barnyard heritage mix. They would be free, since they are not pure bred. It will include BCM, BM, LO, BA, GLW, SLW ,RIR, BR, WL and several other misc. EE/OEs as well. Separate pen have polish, silkies and OEGBs too. My flocks are comingled right now,but are separated by breed sizes.. so they will be very interesting! The Lavender orps will be pure, but only 2 hens of the breed and one is broody, ugh! I am not hatching chickens right now until the seasonal breeds/species are finished for the year. Lots of extra eggs going to fatten my hog.

Well, this isn't really farm related, but I wanted to share.

As of today I'm officially enrolled at IPFW as an Ecology and Evolutionary Biology major!! Unfortunately, all the Biology and Organic Chemistry classes are full already for next semester, so I'm enrolled for Calculus (

) and first-year German with the hopes that some concentration classes will open up.

I would be nervous too, but wow so exciting!

Took some pictures yesterday so I thought I would post a few.

Lovely flock growing for you! Lot of fun choices.
Quote: Depends on your breed choices, I have a bantam coop, and a LF coop. My BA roo did take a liking to my silkie hen

And her 1st 3 eggs hatched as silkilorps! They are crested like a legbar and 5 toes, but look like an odd australorp chick

so we now have a separate coop for my lil guys. I may have to do a 3rd for the leghorn and polish sized breeds, Leghorns are pretty small framed too.

There are a few people I can ask.

I've bought my last three cars on craigslist. The trick is knowing what to look for, and what you're looking at under the hood. If you're good with cars, or know someone who is, it's definitely the way to go. I'd be happy to dig around CL and tell you which ones I'd go look at.

In any case, the first question is always how much do you want to spend?
$5,000 range
I appreciate your help, but don't want you to put a bunch of time into looking since you have plenty to do! If you know someone or know of a good deal, please PM me.
Thank you so much.

My DH is also a car guy, and we've bought several cars from CL (or other sources of used cars). He restores classic cars, both American and European, so he's got a wide (and deep) area of expertise. We live in the Bloomington area, and I'm sure he would be willing to take a look at either the listing, or the actual car if it is in the area. He wouldn't be able to make guarantees, but he would catch most things and be able to tell you what a fair price is (or is not).
I just saw your post because I am catching up. Thank you for your offer of your DH's expertise. Lauren would probably like a Porsche -haha. I will PM you if needed.

Our Indiana Thread members have many talents and are a resourceful bunch! It's great to be able to ask for advice about a variety of topics because there's always someone to help. Thank you!
@ChickCrazed What a magnificent Bieliefelder roo! You should enter that in the calendar contest-- or whatever type of photo contest that BYC has. (I have a hard enough time keeping up with this active thread!)

@PeacefulWalls
Thanks for sharing photos of your beautiful flock. This photo is a wonderful one, too!

I sound like a broken record, but I am still catching up on the thread! I noticed these new members (so far) and want to make sure they see this information.

About the Indiana Thread~
welcome-byc.gif

To participate on the Indiana Thread, we ask that you follow byc.com’s rules for family-friendly posts. We have members of all ages. Our thread is known for being very active because our members are supportive, respectful of each other’s opinions, interesting, and fun! The Indiana Thread is a diverse group of fantastic members who range from newbies to experienced chicken owners, those who raise chickens for healthful food, and others who enjoy chickens as pets. And we love photos! Posts are not limited to the topic of chickens. There is no such thing as a “dumb” question! Whatever your questions may be, we likely have members who can help you.

Do you want to be listed on the Indiana BYC Members’ List?
“Being a member of this thread” just means adding your screen name and flock info, which can be helpful because the list is a spreadsheet format that lets you sort the list by breed, county, or other category. It’s an easy way to find other members who have the same breed you have or who live in a nearby county, etc.

Click on the link (Indiana BYC Members’ List) located below my signature to view the Indiana page. Just look at the bottom of the list page for sorting options.

If you’d like to be added, send a PM (personal message) by simply placing your cursor over my screen name: Mother2Hens, and you will see “Send a PM.” bradselig and CRSelvey (Cheryl) actually add the info, so you can PM either one of them directly, too-- whatever is the easiest for you. A personal message ensures that your info is added. Please send your screen name, county, and city. Also include the following information about each member of your flock: List each species (chicken, duck, etc.), breed (Barred Rock, Blue Cochin, etc.), is it a LF (Large Fowl) or Bantam? If you breed, please include the species. If you have any questions about this thread, please PM jchny2000 (Janet) who is the founder (thread starter) of this group.

Indiana County Map for instant member location/Avatars
If anyone would like a map of your county, like the one on my avatar, I will be happy to provide one. If someone wants a combo map and a chicken or an animal for your avatar, I can put that together for you, just PM me. When I read posts, many times I think “Now where are they from?” I look at the city and still have no idea what part of the state they’re from. The map icon with the county in red because you could quickly glance and see where the member who is posting is from. These avatars are not required-- they are just a free service if you’re interested.

Avatar Updates
If members would like me to change the photo(s) on their avatars, just PM me. Someone might have a picture of a chick that has grown into a hen (or a roo!) and would like to update the photo or someone might like something totally different.

7 days til chickenfest!!!!
Countdown til chickenfest is here, and I am soooo looking forward to a day away!
Remember, some of us will help with a "chicken train" or even an "egg train" to get birds or eggs to or from you. Even if you cannot attend, check the member list! Some of us that are going can help connect the dots! I have a very mixed flock of several breeds. Take in a lot of unwanted roosters (full right now) and rehome many with a new flock. Many of these birds were part of chicken trains to make it here, and go to a home instead of a freezer!
I do process mean birds that can't be kept, and do raise poultry and waterfowl to feed my family. I would rather rehome the well mannered ones if I can. Many communities do still allow roosters. They are an asset to the flock if you free range at all!
If you are trying to avoid having eggs or birds shipped, post it and it can possibly be worked out. I will be going, and am located SE of Pendleton, IN 46064. Be glad to meet and pick up or drop off a few eggs/birds for another member. I will have available but prearranged only:
Chicks:

Muscovy ducklings Chocolate,black,lavender
Pekin ducklings
EE/OE chicks? most are sold/pending
Guinea SOLD
White and brown Chinese or Embden goslings varied ages
very few brown chinese left.

Eggs:
Bourbon Red turkey (depending on my hen!)
EE/OE
Muscovy

I hate my picture taken too.

Yup, the one hatched!
I should be able to do around 9 Marans and 4 legbar to ship out Monday. I'd sell them for $20 shipped.
My Marans came from 2 people, a guy in southern Indiana and the others from Tennessee. You can see pics of my birds at www.facebook.com/aguyandhischicks

Here is a picture of the eggs (just taken tonight) to give you an idea of color.

Awesome!

My little Seabright Roo I got from TSC cause DH said he was cute,
has grown up into a very beautiful Rooster and is the sweetest boy I have, he follows me around, sits on my shoulder while I clean his house, feed or play on the computer ( when I have time to bring him in that is ) and he talks to me the whole time.
This is King Arthur and he is very sick, I have tried vitams, extra protean, a heat light cause he is always cold. My vet can find nothing and he don't know much about this class of chicken. He now has gone blind, he finds his way around and to food and water by his mate chirping to him until he finds it. I will miss he badly if he dies and I really think Marian will grieve herself, she pays such attention, and takes such great care of him.
Does anyone have any Ideal? Please help if you can. We are getting desperate.
