OH.. and none of my birds were hit by that hawk. I had decided to keep them in the pen in the morning for the last couple days. But they are very hawk-savvy...even then, this guy has really been persistant so I wanted to change things up a bit from the norm.
So the chick I found on the floor in my barn looks great. But e won't open his eyes or walk. Occasionally will chirp. Will hold up the upper part of its body. Other than that it lays down. It will moves its legs but won't actually use them. And won't open his eyes. Doesn't look like a vitamin deficiency or any disease I am familiar with but I don't know what to treat with. So far he has got save a chick and poly visol. Oh and he doesn't eat so I have to feed save a chick with an eye dropper. If anyone has any thoughts I am open to ideas.
When my ducks (Darcy and Dingo) were her age I used a mini paint roller tray (one of the white disposable ones). Put it in their brooder box and they mucked up the water any time they wanted to. It isn't deep enough for her t drown but has enough she can splash n play without making a humungous mess. As they got older the splash pan grew with them until they were feathered enough to go outside with Waddles and Quackers to play in the "big girl pond" - although I guess I should say big ducky pond cuz as it turns out Darcy and Dingo are both Drakes!
Is it safe for them to have an open tray like that, though? I was under the impression they would get chilled if they weren't dried off after bath time. Then again, I was also under the impression that they shouldn't have bath time so early, so who knows? Anyway, I have a small tub from some ricotta cheese I'm going to clean out and cut a hole in for her to snooty-snoot her nostrils clean.
They are about 17 wks and no eggs or crows from either! As a matter of fact none of the chicks I got in Feb are laying yet...what am I doing wrong? Not even Philo and Dilly (the WCB Polish) very sure they are pullets though considering their beautiful fluffy full head crests!
Well, for some reason chickiebaby's pictures don't appear to have loaded... But you're right, the males and females have very distinct appearances. Both birds in question are female by their coloration, just one is getting closer to laying than the other. I also think you have Light Brown Leghorns, not Welsummers, Minmin. They have white earlobes, larger combs, and are skinnier like Leghorns usually are. Are they shy or friendly? My Welly, Mabel, is a lap girl, but my LBL, Whiri, is very shy. Probably the biggest difference comes when they start to lay, though. Wellies lay dark brown and Leghorns lay white. My Mabel looks pretty much like chickiebaby's girl, so that's a good comparison there. Here's my LB Leghorn, Whiri:
Anyone going to the White River show in Spencer Aug 30??

Right now I have 3 maybe 4 black hens, and 1 blue, Might have more when I go back through them. I've gone from 7 different varietys/pens of silkies down to 2 pens. I've been cutting way back. I'm planning on takeing them, and maybe some geese to the show to sell. depends on what I can fit in the van !! We are only taking 5 to show, Mine are all molting, or just coming out of molt.
What time is this show? I typically work Saturdays, but we'll probably take a trip down if I get done reasonably early. I'm sure Melanie (my gf) would love to see about getting whatever BBS silkies you're looking to sell that aren't spoken for if you want to PM pricing info. She has a (I think) nice pair of blacks that she wants to expand.
It fell out of the nest when I moved it. She gladly accepts any of the babies. Including the latest one to hatch that didn't develop all the way, but I took it from her. Plus I hve dealt with failure to thrive and this isn't quite the same

I don't have any keets right now, but would sell some adults?
I haven't been on lately, been slowly trying to clean coops and set up for winter. Have a few silkies and geese to sell. Then I'm down where I'll at least be happy !!
