INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Vicki- no, I was waiting til my DH was back in school next week... And don't you know the one that died ISN'T the one that I was going to cull. I guess I'll have to keep the other one around for a while. Down to 4 hens and a roo for my main flock. Taking out the insides is harder than I thought. Good thing I only had 1 to do. I couldn't find anything wrong with her either... She even had an egg ready to lay. It was hard though... And I found her when she was still pretty warm. She was healthy all that I could tell. Full of feed , grass, and bugs. Odd for her to just drop dead while foraging with the flock.
On another note.... The roo had his remaining girls on our back step up against the door. He kept crowing and carrying on, so I looked around and there's a vulture out in a field about 100 feet away. I guess he thought he would bring them to me.

Just rotated my chicks.

There is a divider in between the two pens. The front chicks are older and bout ready to join the rest of the flock when it gets warmer.

These chicks are little over 1 month old. They are in the same pen as the chicks above but are seperated by the chicken wire you see in the pic.

This is the brooder thats in barn. The little chicks are on left and olders ones are on right. You can see one of my coops in back ground.

Cluck- he's a beautiful boy!! Glad he did his job!!

animall- I give mine fruit, occasionally bread-whole wheat and I give my Millie's yogurt.

crafty- oh no!!!!!! Still no idea what happened?? I'd the DH hide while you did the "deed"?

freeflyin- yes there is a guy on our thred that does quail, ck the members list I can't remember his name

Danand~ lol, he left the room while Icut off the head and most of the plucking. Abby stood on a chair and asked what all the parts were. Hope she eats it tomorrow. No idea, she didn't swallow anything bad... an egg was ready to come out, but it was hard. Could it have accidently turned hard early?

Glad to see you found the culprit. Whenever I read stories like this I wonder if I should keep a rooster around if we decide to let ours walk around the back yard.........we had a red-tailed hawk nest in one of the front trees last spring and raise some offspring. It was cool last year, but now we have chickens and not so cool lol.

Really? First time you've spotted a raccoon? They've been around us on the W side of Indy (by the 8 Second Saloon) for the 15 years I've lived here.

Anybody live on the west side of Indy? My wife and I would like to see a chicken operation and we are looking for volunteers to show us theirs.
A Red-tail got one of my barred rocks several months back, and coons claimed four of them last year... Hawks are hard to manage, but the coons I trapped, and then put electric fence up all thru the coop, top to bottom, also put a radio in the main barn and left it on 24/7... since then... no losses... just wanted to help if possible.

Wow thanks...I have talk radio blaring in the garage today...(fool hawks into thinking people are out and about). seems to be working sooo far the day is still young another 1 1/2 before bed time for them. I did see where someone had a hawk kite attacked to a pole that would swing around similar to a windsock. Like the flag idea already my husband will be all over that... think we have a large Notre dame flag lying around somewhere. What kind of pole did he use?
