Strangest call to date was someone asking if I sold donkeys. After a few questions I let them talk to my 3 yr old who happened to be asking for the phone at just hte right time.
Normally though if I don't have what the person wants, I'll give them a name and number of a person that might have it.
I could use a peacock and peahen breeders name and number.

Thank you to Kittydoc & Chickcrazed for helping make my daughter's 4H project possible. Terrific hatch. 8 out of 10 Bielefelder eggs hatched; 6 are female. 14 out of 15 blk/Lav Orpington eggs hatched. Broody is doing well.

I would give anything to go back to last week when a lot of my energy went toward planning for chicks. Life was normal & happy then. At 3:30am Fri morning, my mom stopped breathing for a few minutes. My poor father was there to witness everything. The paramedics revived her, but only lower brain functions like reflexes came back. Our family waited for days to see any signs of hope, but each day the brain activity changed & slowed. My dad, 3 children, 12 grandchildren, & 6 great-grandchildren miss this amazing woman. Many people stopped by to say Good Bye on Sun-Mon. My mom always regretted not being there when her mom passed, so I knew it was important for my mom not to be alone until God called her home. On Monday at 5pm, the crowd thinned. By 6pm my dad had to leave (too difficult to hear her breathing). The next shift was running late, so my husband had to run home to tuck our kids into bed. He called a friend to keep me company while he was away. It was during that time between husband leaving & my friend arriving, that my mom passed while I held her hand.

My mom & I spoke on the phone often. So many words we shared & when the the docs recommended everyone say what needed to be said (final words), I had none. Throughout the days I keep seeing things that I want tell mom about or all those little things that remind me of her. These days have been so long, so I want to call home to speak with her for comfort. Next week is her 80th birthday with Mother's Day soon after. It's unbearable to think that I will only have her memories & not her hugs. She was strong & in general good health. Just one moment changed everything forever.

My sister also went into ICU last week. She had a close call & had to fight with her docs so she could be released from the hospital to say good bye to Mom. She lives with my parents &, unlike my mom, is in poor health. My poor father is emotionally crushed & battling the same bronchitis. They were married young & just celebrated their 62nd anniversary in Jan. Mom was his world.

Please continue to pray for my family. DH & I have been blessed with friends/neighbors who have provided meals & childcare, so I could stay at the hospital. I will not be posting for a while, but I wanted to share my feelings, b/c I no longer have my mom with whom to share.

I am so sorry. You were there for her and thats what she needed. Hold your Dad close and watch out for him, closely, I know you already are. I hope your sister improves also. Lot on your plate now and we are here when you need to just talk things out or just vent.

@jchny2000 - good luck with the weddings! We had my brother and sister within a few months of each other in 2013, one in Brown County and one in New Harmony. This summer my youngest brother is getting married in Colorado!!

Yes, it's me again and yes, I'm behind again… there's a good reason for me getting behind with posts. My typical day consists of doing some of my freelance work, and depending on if I have meetings/errands, I'll spend 2 - 8 hours outside with my flock doing landscaping, digging up worms for them, and taking them for field trips outside the fenced part of the yard. At dark, I shower, my DH & I eat (kids have flown the coop) and then I work again on the computer until at least 1:00 am. That's why I'm often too exhausted by the time I look at our thread. I'm obviously addicted to being outside with my chickens!

@chickiebaby1 ~ I love this little girl you got at the Bloomington Poultry Show! But, what breed/size/coloring is she? Cochin? English Orpington? Splash? Speckled?

I request this favor now and then: Everyone, please list breed/size/coloring with photos. We have newbies --and oldies like me who don't know every breed and color description. We all like to learn. Thank you!

Losing your mom is the toughest. My mom died 25 years ago, and I remember it like it was yesterday. I'm sure you have many wonderful memories. My memories of my mom haven't faded at all.
You've had so much to process with not only with your mom, but also your father and sister. We're here for you. Our thread's topics are multifaceted.

SLW around 2 months old. DF says roo, I'm on the fence, hoping for a pullet. I have a Lt Brahma same age that is also getting waddles and comb pretty early, but definitely a pullet.

I set up my Little Giant tonight to get temps going. Will put in Marans eggs in soon. Probably going to put in a few of my mix eggs in too.

Going to put the other half in the Brinsea tomorrow. Hopefully one of my brooders will be ready for babies! My current babies need to grow quicK!

Glad to hear you've been enjoying the fine weather. I confess I have been doing the same. The yard looks so much better this year than last, already. I have even started a garden. I was asking myself why I didn't do all of these things last year...the answer was, we were pouring all that time and $$$ into the chicken coop!

We even planted flowers in the boxes around the coop (since the perennial herbs didn't take off last year).

I think my silkie hen is doing better. She does not seem to be suffering right now, anyway. I would prefer if she didn't break her beak again in any way! She was sitting on 11 guinea eggs at last count. I'm trying to break the other two broody hens. I am not even getting an egg a day some days, since it is down to my barred rock to lay.

I think one of my buff silkies is a roo. What do y'all reckon?

My new little girl is a bantam mottled cochin, almost a year old.

Okay, I am trying to feed my girls fermented feed. I let the feed ferment for 3 days then started feeding to them. My questions are 1. how much feed per chicken per day and 2. how long can I keep the feed in the bucket until it is no longer good. I made it in a five gallon pail and I am wondering if I made too much and it will spoil before they eat it all.
