INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I'm heavily considering purchasing a Brinsea Adv Octagon 20 incubator.

Wondering a few things:

-Anyone use one? Your review if so.

-Anyone have one for sale? PM me.

-Anyone know how to get the best price if I purchase new?

I have every model of Brinsea! Mini, Octagon 20, and Octagon 40. The 20 is my favorite. The lid can be lifted easily with one hand, which is not the case with the 40. Also, the 40 took several days before the lid fit correctly without me having to adjust it by hand, though now it's fine. If money were no object, I'd rather have two 20's than one 40 for ease of use. You don't realize how often you need your other hand until you have to use both to put the 40's lid back on or take it off. I do like them all, though.

If you watch for credit card deals on Rakuten.com, you can get one inexpensively there. They offer X number of "Super Rakuten Points" for getting a credit card. I got $60 worth and DH got $80 worth when we got our separate cards. His $80 was enough to get an EcoGlow 20 brooder (very safe and effective) FREE!! I saved $60 off my Octagon 40, which made it the cheapest I could get anywhere. Brinsea sells through Rakuten, so they are coming directly from Brinsea in Florida, not through a third party, and shipping has been free for everything we've bought there so far.

Otherwise, Amazon typically has the best deal. The best time of year to buy them is November. They his their lowest price then, and start going up in December, and keep creeping up through spring.

Maybe it's just some irritation causing a little swelling in her eye lids. You said she's been inside, could be something environmental isn't sitting with her right. I have a Marans hen whos eyes look like that. She's perfectly healthy. I actually think it could be an age thing. Some of my older girls eye are starting to look like that. My silkie with cataracts lids are like that. If her pupils change shape, then ocular mareks could be what it is, but I doubt it. I'm sure she's fine.

That is was I was assuming too. I just wish I new what it was so maybe I could eliminate it. I just wanted to get others inputs to be sure and if anyone has seen it before. Thank you for you input. It was very helpful

Here are a few photos of most of my lavender Orpington chicks. I think I have 9! I will probably keep a few, but do NOT need 9. Here's a BOGO deal--buy 3 lavender chicks, get one black/lav split chick FREE!

Some look more yellow or messy because one group was eating fermented feed and they literally bathe in the stuff. I put them all together for the photo shoot. The blacks are two black/lav splits and one regular black (fortunately, I can tell the difference by their beak and facial markings right now, but I really need to get some of those teeny rubber bands to mark the regular blacks). The "cleaner" lavs are eating regular dry crumbles right now. The oldest chick is 6 days older than the youngest one. I am one of those idiots who doesn't set everything the same day, even though my lav eggs have stored beautifully (just ask @Faraday40 , she'll tell you!). I don't like to crowd my lockdown bator.

They chicks are out of my cockerel Cogburn, who is shown in my avatar. He won't be a year old until August. He's 100% English, huge, and still growing. Their moms are 4 lovely lavender hens from Chicken Scratch Poultry out of Hinkjc lines.

I will have Lavender Orps until the day I die. They are so cute I can hardly stand it!

Anyone interested in going in on a shipment of birds? Fellow BYCer git-r-done is selling out of breeder stocks of several different breeds. I've wanted his Russian Orlaf for some time. Last breed on my wish list. They are in OH but shipping is 50-60 and thought maybe someone else would like to get in on it. ??

Please do let us know the available breeds.

Interesting article. I personally don't think it's being spread by rodents or flies. I think migrating waterfowl do spread it, but I think its being spread by something these commercial poultry businesses are sharing or purchasing for their operations coming from the same source. Something they order for their flocks. I'm not sure what it would be. It's just been affecting so many large operations. I do agree with the idea that more backyard flocks have been affected, but haven't been reported. Just the number of birds lost by commercial operations is fishy. http://www.wiscnews.com/lifestyles/health-med-fit/article_74a23cbe-dc04-5ebd-9d34-636dd04c929e.html

They tested clean for typhoid/ pullurom. I test all my birds, but don't have my flock certified just because there is paper work and everything you to go through and to me it isn't worth it. The only reason I test is to e able to show and peace of mind. I have seen birds with Mareks and I highly doubt tht is what is going on here. She does have the pale comb and the tired eyes but other than that she is a perfectly happy healthy bird. Sometimes she does Stand around with her eyes closed but not a lot. I also dot think it is mg because I have dealt with birds I had in quarentine that had it and it doesn't match up. I am wondering if it is a temporarily symptom because she doesn't really have anything wrong with her just the pale looking comb and tired eyes. She was in te house all winter an was just recently taken back outside. Before I took her in he comb looked better, so I don't know if not being outside for a few months had anything to do with. She doesn't have bloody stool and no worms that I have seen. I won't worn my birds until I see worms. None of them have ever had then so now have ever been wormed. She is around. Year and a half old an has never laid an egg. I will read the articles you posted later, thank you.
just throwing this out there...but just because you cant see worms doesnt mean they dont have them...as there are many types of worms....and different types take different amounts of wormers...some worms you cant see as well....and if you never had a fecal done you truly dont know if they are worm free....i worm all my birds twice a year....just to make sure...can never be to safe. hope the bird gets better
