INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I think my predator is a rat! So far it's eluded my traps but I found this this morning.

No idea where the eggs she'll came from.

If you live in Indianapolis take note!

Anyone wondering what has happened to Indy Rezone? I check about once a month or so - when I remember. Since the public meetings last year there has been nothing. The website disappeared, there is only the .gov draft from last June: http://www.indy.gov/egov/city/dmd/planning/services/current/Pages/ordinance.aspx and there have been no updates posted about a revised draft.

Wish TV did a short piece that says they are hoping to send Indy Rezone to Council next month. The piece focused on vacant houses but anyone who remembers the draft knows that it had a huge impact impact on poultry and goats amongst other things. It's been awfully hush, hush, with no info since last summer. What exactly is going to council? Here is the article:

If you live in Indy please keep your eyes and ears open and post anything you find out! Last year the public meeting locations were announced and then changed at the last minute. We need to see the draft before it goes to council, and not at the last minute!

Although not ideal, I did have to resort to poison in my coop with the mouse problem the way it was (I killed 300 or so, MAJOR infestation that I could not treat any other way......). I used the plastic poison huts so the chickens could not reach the poison, put the poison up in the loft totally out of reach and was careful to do a body search early in the morning to get them before the chickens. I also kept the chickens contained for a few days. I had no ill effects so it is doable for those that deem the risk necessary.

I did also read that a larger animal would have to consume several mice to get enough poison to be a problem. Where you run into issues are animals like Owls that ONLY consume mice and are better hunters, they can eat enough in one night to cause death. You would run into problems if the chickens were able to get directly into the poison.

I would say the normal chicken owner should avoid the risk, but for those having MAJOR issues like I was and like I would consider a rat problem....I would do it again in a heartbeat!

I am really curious to find out what the ramifications of the Avian Flu will have on the summer/fall chicken swaps and meets. I usually post upcoming events, but kind of think all of them are cancelled until the ban is lifted. Has anyone heard about this yet? Don't want to add events if people can't attend. We haven't gone to any this spring and have been practicing strict security.

Helped shear my cousin's 3 alpaca this past weekend. We can't believe how much fiber we got and how tiny they look now! Before and after pics below.

We also sheared our alpacas this past Friday morning & they look so skinny!! We always transport them in our old van. Thank goodness we used it this time again instead of the new one. The 3 of them decided it was time to NOT get along once they were all in the back and ended up having a spit fight with each other. Of course this was after they had eaten hay. If you're not familiar with alpaca spit it comes out in a wet, stinky spray. And if they've just eaten hay it will be loaded with chewed up bits of green. Did I mention it stinks?? By the time we got home about half an hour later, both back windows and the sides below them, both middle windows, backs of the van seats and parts of the ceiling were covered with green spittle. Of course DH had to get ready to go back to work so Chloe & I were left to get buckets of soapy water & rags...Yeah.....

our barn cats have kept most of the mice, rats, and other small animals down to a level I don't ever see them alive. But I have lost a few chicks to them as well. We have to be very careful that the pen containing chicks is not only cat proof but chick escape proof too.
For in our house we have the shock traps but they don't work in the coop as well as dust causes the trap to just die.
