INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Is it a boy or girl? About 12 weeks old. Had the red comb and wattles at around 4 or 5 weeks old.

I vote boy. The gals don't reddin up until they are at the POL "point of lay" which for hatchery type could be as early as 20 weeks but heritage breeds typically run from 6mos-1yr

Just wanted to say thanks again for the support yesterday. I was having a really bad day... Feeling a bit more chipper today, though.

I think with how things have been going that my 'therapist' is going to start insisting on an hourly wage, though. Elda does take her job so seriously.

Anyway, as of last night's checkup, the fluid in Marama's abdomen is down (it has been coming and going, though...). I definitely feel a lump now, but she's getting a lot of her sass back, so maybe she has a little more time left than I had thought yesterday.

Anyway...
Aw, I do remember you talking about that, too! I've only ever found one small lash egg (thank goodness, because lash eggs seriously gross me out), but my Frou-Frou did have a habit of 'faking' egg laying sometimes, too. I think she was jealous because all her friends laid eggs almost every day and she only laid, like, 120 teeny-tiny eggs in her 3 years of life.

Thanks for the information.

Haha, yeah, I'm hoping to go and the temptation to get a quarantine pen set up beforehand is really powerful... I don't want to bring anything home, but... What if I need to?

Aw, glad he came home!

He's such a handsome guy!
Are the other hens picking on her, or is she just a loner type? I have a hen that tries to perch off on her own every night, and all I do is move her to the perches with the other hens every night. But, she doesn't get pushed around, so I know she'll stay where I put her.

Edited for spelling
No they pick on her if I make her stay in the coop run with them they will beat the snot out of her if I'm not there to break it up, and its not just 1 hen, it whatever hen she happens to be close to. I normally get rid of bullies, but I would have to get rid of my whole flock at this rate. I'm afraid I'm going to have to give her her own heating pad when it gets could. And DH is not happy about that due to light bill.... and running electric to her in the first place.
The bantams let her eat and free range with them but when it comes to bed time she is chased to the floor.

Glade Marama is getting back to her old self, hope she lives to be a ripe old age.

I hope my 'therapist' dont start charging by the hour... I couldnt afford that.,., lol

I will try pickling some this winter when I have more free time. Youngest DD and I have peeling contests to see who can make the longest peel without breaking it. I give the quail sprouts during the winter for extra nutrition, and use 30% gamebird feed. They are a fantastic alternative for a small yard, easy to keep. I plan on an aviary for them next year, I can't free range them but can sure make their lives happier. I chose the line I purchased due to an average uniform weight of a pound, and larger than normal egg. a true Jumbo Coturnix!
I started quail about 3 years ago, got a few eggs here few there and got a fair flock going. Hens start laying at 6 weeks and lay daily from then on. I made the error of not switching out breeding birds soon enough and my egg production dropped to near zero. I replaced my flock with James Marie Farms quail (eggs) this fall. Robby is like Greenfire farms is to chickens, one of the best breeders in the country.
He wants to speak to each customer personally, to give them the best flock type to suit their needs. I discussed with him our needs, over 2 hours on the phone! Answered a lot of questions, and had some great advice on keeping and husbandry.
They will be a primary protein source this winter since our big freezer broke. If you look up nutritional values on eggs and meat, its pretty surprising how much that little bird provides you with. Robby also mentioned, I found very interesting the cancer research involving chemo, and using quail eggs to help calm the stomach of cancer patients. Trials are finding it in fact, eases discomfort for the patents. This was important to me since FIL is undergoing chemo now.

Need some help! I had 3 orps that are 8 weeks old. They are still in the house at night but during the day I bring them out to a grow out pen. On Tuesday morning, I went to bring them out and my GL was all fluffed up, head down and also noticed some bloody poop. Within a couple of hours he was dead. Now I have had the other 2 pullets on Corid for 2 days thinking it was Cocci. I have been giving it to my partridge by a dropper because she is not eating or drinking very often. Went to check on them before heading to bed and my partridge has bloody poop now! Could it be something else? Worms? I just mixed up some wazine and gave her some, cause I don't know what else to do. All of my older girls are fine, well at least for now they are.

A BYCer from KY brought deviled quail eggs to a chickenstock. Said to kick her if she ever mentioned doing that again!

They were good, though.

Are any of my peeps going to the Lebanon show? I have never been to this show and was just wondering what kind of birds they usually have for sale? Or if any of my buddies on here are going if I could get some hatching eggs? Do they sell hatching eggs at the show?? I'm very interested in different colored silkies ( buff, splash, maybe partirgde) I am also looking for tobult polish or bantam polish any colors or any color ( except BBS) large fowel cochin.

Generally you'll find a wide variety of birds, eggs, and equipment. Hatching eggs are often more scarce this time of year, but there could be some.

I'll probably be bringing a pair or two of young tolbunts and maybe a pair of WCB bantam polish for sale. Red Dodge Ram with camper shell--look me up even if you aren't interested in the birds. Love to chat with other poultry enthusiasts.

I am so sorry to hear about your loss. Stay with the corid, I do suspect its cocci. There is hope for the remaining birds if they drink. Eye dropper to get that fluid down but be sure to get past the tongue orifice so they don't aspirate. Don't over treat without seeing other symptoms it may weaken the bird more. Coccidia works fast, but may have a different effect on each bird that gets it. Some just fail faster than others.
