INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I am so sorry to hear about your loss. Stay with the corid, I do suspect its cocci. There is hope for the remaining birds if they drink. Eye dropper to get that fluid down but be sure to get past the tongue orifice so they don't aspirate. Don't over treat without seeing other symptoms it may weaken the bird more. Coccidia works fast, but may have a different effect on each bird that gets it. Some just fail faster than others.

Ok thanks, I am just afraid I am going to wake up tomorrow and she will be gone. I was hoping they had a chance since I started the Corid. This is my first big problem with my chickens and its breaking my heart.

@chickrookie that is a tough one. How is she with chicks, or younger birds? If you have a young flock growing up, maybe try housing her with them.
I think my juveniles are the only ones I haven't tried to put her with, will try that today, thanks.

Need some help! I had 3 orps that are 8 weeks old. They are still in the house at night but during the day I bring them out to a grow out pen. On Tuesday morning, I went to bring them out and my GL was all fluffed up, head down and also noticed some bloody poop. Within a couple of hours he was dead. Now I have had the other 2 pullets on Corid for 2 days thinking it was Cocci. I have been giving it to my partridge by a dropper because she is not eating or drinking very often. Went to check on them before heading to bed and my partridge has bloody poop now! Could it be something else? Worms? I just mixed up some wazine and gave her some, cause I don't know what else to do. All of my older girls are fine, well at least for now they are.
I'm so sorry you are going through this. I went through the exact same thing this summer. I lost 28 total chicks 15 of them were A new blood line for my silkie's. I went through a whole big bottle of corid and a bottle of sulfa stuff from my vet. Nothing worked. I am so hoping that your chicks recover. I know the heartache and don't wish it on anyone.

My JMF quail eggs are here, super well packaged also! Too big for regular quail racks too, glad incubators almost empty. Got a special surprise set of eggs from Robby too. Can't wait to see them!

I love the different colors and patterns, no I have never seen quail eggs before...

@jchny2000
We had some friends that kept quail in their walk-out basement in an indoor aviary thing. (These folks are from Russia originally.) She finally decided to get rid of them because of the smell. They are in a subdivision with an acre lot, but I don't know if there was an appropriate place to put it outside.

You mentioned not being able to free range them. I didn't think you could keep quail unless they are penned somehow.... wouldn't they just fly away?

OH-MY-Gosh If you ever have the opportunity, hard boiled quail eggs, yummmmm

I will try pickling some this winter when I have more free time. Youngest DD and I have peeling contests to see who can make the longest peel without breaking it. I give the quail sprouts during the winter for extra nutrition, and use 30% gamebird feed. They are a fantastic alternative for a small yard, easy to keep. I plan on an aviary for them next year, I can't free range them but can sure make their lives happier. I chose the line I purchased due to an average uniform weight of a pound, and larger than normal egg. a true Jumbo Coturnix!
I started quail about 3 years ago, got a few eggs here few there and got a fair flock going. Hens start laying at 6 weeks and lay daily from then on. I made the error of not switching out breeding birds soon enough and my egg production dropped to near zero. I replaced my flock with James Marie Farms quail (eggs) this fall. Robby is like Greenfire farms is to chickens, one of the best breeders in the country.
He wants to speak to each customer personally, to give them the best flock type to suit their needs. I discussed with him our needs, over 2 hours on the phone! Answered a lot of questions, and had some great advice on keeping and husbandry.
They will be a primary protein source this winter since our big freezer broke. If you look up nutritional values on eggs and meat, its pretty surprising how much that little bird provides you with. Robby also mentioned, I found very interesting the cancer research involving chemo, and using quail eggs to help calm the stomach of cancer patients. Trials are finding it in fact, eases discomfort for the patents. This was important to me since FIL is undergoing chemo now.
Keep us updated on your quail project. I enjoy learning about them. (Never been high on my wishlist, I just enjoy learning about them.) I'm curious to hear about how well the eggs hatch, difficulty of raising the chicks, & daily flock maintenance.

Well it's a start! Heading to pick up first trailer in a bit and get all of the cages donated for the cause loaded up!

I am picking up 3 more on my way to get the trailer.

I have just had an out pour of generosity from so many!! Thank you!
@racinchickins and his DH, @mother2hens and her DD, @pbirdhaven and her DSs are all loaning a helping hand to capture and corral Sunday! I couldn't ask for more! You all are amazing "family"!

I'll continue to post progress pics and share the venture!

It's just a wonderful feeling to know there are so many good people I am having the privilege to call my friends!

So not to really bring up the interbreeding arguement again but when I first got into chickens a guy who was into chickens told me you could breed for right generations I think that's rediculus but is it true?

You can borrow my two crates too! I live not far from where we met to trade off the Nugget D'Uccle. I might be able to help with catching and transport too.

Update on the tom, Puff:

Sinuses are doing a little better now that we've given him one round of 1cc tylan50 directly the most swollen sinus. He's been strutting around and trying to get some lovin' most of the day. Girls haven't put out for him yet that I can tell, but he's pretty valiantly attempting to woo them, so I have faith they'll learn what a proper man's like soon enough (and hopefully stop propositioning me!).

Thanks! Right now I am loading up and believe I have all the crates I can haul. As for Sunday we have a large # of folks and it being on a country road we will be hard pressed to add any vehicles to the drive. I may come back to you next week depending on how many we catch vs cage needs. Unfortunately I don't know how many there truly are and if I have to double up to transport I will certainly be in need of more crates. I won't be able to determine what I will need either. A lot of variables based on the #'s and sizes of the birds. I know there were plenty of adults but also saw young ones.

Thanks again!

I am keeping my fingers crossed. She is still hanging on and there hasn't been anymore bloody poop as of today. So we will see. Thanks

Thanks for the advice in my moment of panic. She is hanging on and I kept her on the Corid.
I think quail eggs are so beautiful. I would raise them just so I had something that beautiful to look at every morning. Good luck and Thanks Again.
