So sorry for your losses. Great Horned Owls are nick named "flying tigers". At the nature center where I volunteer here, the female GHO is huge and she will attack people when she is setting on eggs. She is beautiful though. the female owls are bigger than the males. Also remember that they are protected by Federal law and it is a crime to kill them. Our peas will follow our chickens into the barn at night, where we can close them up, thankfully. Could you coax yours into an enclosed space with food for the night? If not, you could try hanging old cd's or dvd's in a sort of mobile, close to where your birds roost. Tie some tinsel or shiny ribbon to the mobile, too. Try to put it in area where it has some reflected light. It will spin and flash. this works very well as a hawk repeller...not exactly the most attractive thing, but it does work. It is believed that the hawks think it's fire....or for some reason, it is disorienting to them.
