INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

http://muncie.craigslist.org/grd/5471573351.html

Seller has African and Toulouse (huge birds, big dewlaps) and is selling goslings (60/ea), eggs (5/ea), adults (125/ea) and pairs (250/pair). In or around Seymour

1-yr-old Sebastopol gander $75 Bloomington area

Whole bunch of birds around Loiusville area, but I don't know if I'm willing to drive that far. Includes lots of everything, but the eye-catcher was a pair of Sebastopols for $80 (one white, one gray).

Someone in the Georgetown, IN area has a trio of "barnacle geese" for 400.

Camby area. Phoenix and fibro-Phoenix Show-quality cockerels (one BBR, one blue-breasted red), plus hatching eggs, which can optionally include two eggs from the fibro-phoenix line. $30/doz. Have four chicks available for right before Easter.

Found all kinds of nice things, but no turkey poults.

Of course, I need no more birds. Husband found out that he's highly likely to lose his job in less than two months, and, of course, we still don't have a buyer for that house which has been on the market for seven years (and set a record! a really bad record!). If my birds had a clean bill of health, I'd have to let them go, but it's just not ethical at this point.

The African goose post for Muncie has impressive birds. What turkey breed are you most interested in? ETA I hope you get a buyer soon. Have you thought about where you want to move to?

I made a trip to Louisville and back today (only 2 hours each way) to deliver two rollaway beds for an upcoming family get-together in honor of my niece and her family who will be visiting from Berlin—they're also known as "The Germans." lol Although rain was predicted all day, I decided to make the drive since it wasn't a good day to go outside with the chickens. I hate to waste a nice day! I didn't know that it was going to be extremely FOGGY the entire day!
@kittydoc ~ Since I was gone today, I will call the vet tomorrow about Lacy. I was just saying that she hadn't worsened, but today she has more of a sneeze.

Ugh! I will get Poly vi sol vitamins (with No iron) tomorrow, too. Thank you for your response!

@chick rookie ~ You are not a bad chicken mom! The only reason I mentioned hearing a little rattle noise from Lacy as I put her in the car at your house is to clarify that I do not think it's related to the health issues that my other chickens have had. And I thought that the noise was related to her funny little voice that I love. Lacy has acted fine for five weeks now. Today is the first day that I've noticed worsening symptoms—the occasional sneeze. She has not had any discharge, eye, nose, heavy breathing or anything. She looked a little ill in that short video I posted only because it was late at night and I woke her up. Anyway, I will see the vet. If the worst case scenario happens and she gets really sick, I will not regret getting her from you. I just fell in love with her immediately, and she's been so uplifting to have inside. I still can't bear to think of losing my little Screech. Although chicken personalities aren't replaceable, Lacy has made life happier for me while going through Screech's necropsy ordeal. Hopefully, with medical attention she will get better and can eventually join my other girls! Meanwhile, my youngest DD will be home for a few days next week, but she won't be sleeping in her room—it's Lacy's room!

Re Rant #1 Sorry about your chick searching experiences! It's a little late for me to mention, but both of Evansville's RKs have tons of chicks. I purposely haven't bothered to post about it, since no one on our thread lives here, except for me!!! I thought of you as I passed through Dubois Co. today. You're only an hour away. If you do decide to come here, let me know ahead of time and I will go to both stores to update you. It's going to rain for several days, so I need to get out and run errands anyway! Our RKs usually have a designated person to help, and the chicks have always looked good. Other than that, our RKs are horrible and having terrible service! Haha Our TSC is nicer and has good help, but when I've seen chicks there in the past, they haven't had many (the store is small).

Re Rant #2 ~ That is a difficult situation to assess since I don't know the couple, etc.
Here's a suggested course of action—Just IMO—lol
First approach~ Be calm and explain. Now that you've had a few days, maybe you could ask if you could meet with them to discuss a few things. You could make a list of all of your missing/murdered chickens, list their names, breeds, where you traveled to purchase them, value, egg value, etc. You could approach the topic by saying the following in a friendly, conversational way— something like, "I realize that you aren't familiar with raising chickens, but it is actually kind of a complex business. I have invested a lot of money in building coops and runs, purchasing chickens as well as food, coop supplies, and medications. I've spent x years attending seminars and educating myself because chicken health is the most important aspect. Besides my time and money spent, my chickens are like my babies (tears in eyes). I have raised them from one day old chicks (or whatever). People don't realize that chickens have distinct personalities and are intelligent. I am very attached and invested in each one of my chickens, so it is very upsetting when they are killed by loose dogs (avoid word "your" or they might get defensive—you are trying to be nice and reason with them). If my dog attacked your (dogs, cat, child), you would be very upset. Since I've moved in, (pull out paper with list) these chickens have been killed, and it has cost me x number of dollars. I'd like to deduct this loss from my next rent payment. In the future, this situation can be prevented if you are willing to always keep your dogs in your yard…"

By this time, you can tell how this conversation is going. If they get defensive and act immature about the whole issue, you should not get into an argument, but diffuse the situation by saying, "We're adults. I don't want to fight. I thought that if I explained the situation from my viewpoint that you would realize that my chickens are much more than entertainment for your dogs. I'm disappointed in your response." Then leave, and let them have a few days to mull over the meeting.

I'm sure you know that you have to take into consideration:
Did you sign a lease?
What might happen if you call animal control? Do you want an ongoing feud?

Even if they agree to keep their dogs in their yard, there's always a chance that one will escape or that another dog or predator will attack. I think you are doing the right thing by investing in your flock's safety by adding an auto door —even if your shift changes, there will be times when you can't be there to close the door so that will be a stress-reliever. Adding fencing is also a plus even though unexpected expenses are never fun.

Btw, correspondence about meetings, repairs, etc. should always be done via email so that you have a record of issues and their responses.
Your outdoor camera also documents issues.

@funnyfarmmom Congratulations on your new job! You did it!

@tmarsh83 Wow! I am impressed. You apparently have construction experience?

@Mishlerfarm24 Your fiancé sounds pretty handy, too! You'll have to post some photos.

@pipdzipdnreadytogo Way to go, Marge! Congrats on the babies!

@ellymayRans What a sweet little ducky! So you had a lone chicky in that same hatch, right? How is it doing?

@jchny2000
They are beautiful Muscovies!

@amwchickin ~ One more thing… Google: what to do if landlord's dog killed my chickens?
I haven't read the results, but you may find some tips since there are lots of people who have had similar problems.

@Mother2Hens I am glad you have found comfort in Lacy and have bonded so well with her, It's that reason ( and my own bond with her ) that I feel like like a bad chicken Mom. I know things happen and when you have as many birds as I do it is hard to notice each and every little thing but Lacy would ride on my shoulder and helps me feed and was around me alot more then any of the others, so I just feel that I should have noticed, not looking for a pity party, just saying.
After your loosing Screech I would feel real bad if you lost any more, especially Lacy.
I pray it is nothing bad and she gets well soon for both her and you.
Your DD may get a bit jealous when she finds out her room has been given to Lacy.... lol

Talking about getting things done in the great weather we WERE having, I have been trying to get the tin picked up that the high winds we had blew off the patio part of the red coop but bigger projects have been first, now that they are done and I can get to that... it starts raining!!! So I have started on the house chores that I have been neglecting all week
hide.gif
. And I really need to find boxes and start packing up the stuff we really dont need and get ready to start moving, that time is coming up fast... 5 days and counting... cant wait but also dred it at the same time. Does that even make sense??? I look forward to having a bigger place that is ours!! BUT I don't look forward to all the fence building, house building, horse barn, goat barn ect... and moving the critters and the household stuff. It's going to take us 2 months just to get moved!! Then it's putting things where we want them and setting up everything... but it will all be worth it in the end. I hope. Only 1 neighbor instead of 100's and 3 more acres of ground, even if it is woods.
And I already know I will be SOO far behind on the thread that I will never get caught up...
he.gif
once we start the move. And it is so far out in the stix I still dont know how, or if we even can, get internet??? That would really be bad... talk about withdraws!!!
And I would miss all of you!!
But I'm not going to think about that now, will cross that bridge when I come to it, sometimes I think my brain needs a shut off switch... lol

@Mother2Hens usually just enough experience to think that I can do something and then hose it up major. LOL.

We've built some pole barns and some basic home repair type stuff. I can get by, but I'm no professional.

@Mother2Hens - thank you so much for the suggestions! I am hoping to sit down this weekend to discuss the chicken/dog thing and a few other issues (mostly repairs). I am compiling my list and expenses, etc. so I am prepared. I copied and saved what you typed so I can kind of make a bullet point list of things I need to say, just in case we go off topic or I get emotional...very possible!
