Nearly as big as his daddy already, and just as fiesty if not more. He stays right next to my WeeWee all the time, she still mothers him.

I have a five gallon bucket with the push in style nipples. It dont leak and works great. BUT MY DARN FLOCK WONT DRINK FROM IT. They know how and ever so often I will see 1 drink from it but not very often.

When I introduced the nipple waterer, I put one outside and one inside. The regular font waterer was inside. When they were outside, they had to use the nipple waterer or go back inside. Fortunately I have lazy chickens. When I was satisfied they had it figured out, I took away the font. That took a couple of days. I did the same with the week old chicks, except for the outside part.

It should hang high enough that the nipples are just above eye level when the chickens are walking.

Your coop is coming along. You don't have to worry about your chickens in the coop while you build your run, think of all the additional space they will have. Unless you let them run around in your basement. Ours were in storage bins until they moved into the coop, they were in the coop about a week before the run was complete. We did have a hastily built chicken tractor for some outdoor activity.

If we don't end up with a rooster, which right now I'm about 90% sure Caroline may end up being Carl, I may just take you up on that. Doesn't look like you are too far of a drive from me. Is he friendly?

Thanks for the coop compliments! We spent a lot of time and energy deciding exactly what we wanted. We talked about collecting the rain water, but we'd only be able to gutter the low part and it didn't really seem worth it for the 8 feet we'd get. Who knows, we may add that in time. I had some old cedar planks from a fence that we were going to use for siding, but I think we're actually going to use them in our house now, so I need another plan for siding. I really want to do wood siding so I'm on the hunt for some reasonably priced options. Trying to keep the coop from costing 30x what the chickens did...
Ha. Give up on the coop cost, just build it like you want it. Our budget for our coop was ~$350, ended up like $1,000. I have reciepts to prove it. Are you keeping your coop receipts? Good idea to remind you how much that first egg costs lol.

It has been 1 hour 38 minutes since my post. This is an unheard of lapse of activity on this thread. Has there been an atomic attack? Am I all alone in the world? Aaaaaagggggggghhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!! Run for the hills. It's the end of the world!!!!!!!

Where did I put my tinfoil hat?

330 1/8 posts per week since inception of this thread. Like my geometry class in high school, don't fall behind or you will be lost.

Everything is fine, John. I think you are the one with the problem, since you must check the forum every 10 minutes. I try to get on 2x/day, and I still fall behind 78 posts. About the tinfoil hat, I stole that from you a couple weeks ago. The DW complains because it's noisey at night. That's when you really need the protection. Keeps aliens, government out of my head. The like to beam things at you when you sleep.
OK, since I am the only smart-aleck online (it's Central time here, you know-- it's early), I will post this for you early morning birds:
(my daughter forwarded it to me)

Central time. Slow time. Guess that's why your chicken needs the coffee!
Almost forgot to send this one....
Sounds good-- Bloomington of all places is pretty laid back, but there are crazy neighbors everywhere. When our chickens were about 4-5 months old, the tables turned and they started chasing our three cats. Our cats still run from the chickens and try to avoid them. All it takes is one hard peck on the cat's nose, and they learn a lesson.
Our chickens sort of gang up on our yard cat. They will start to surround her, and usher her away from where they are. It's funny to see them all slowly walk towards the cat, moving her away from the coop. Kinda looks to me like it takes 8 chickens to figure out how to move the cat. Bird brain indeed!
