INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

OK, since I am the only smart-aleck online (it's Central time here, you know-- it's early), I will post this for you early morning birds:
(my daughter forwarded it to me)

Do you think we could teach our birds not only how to serve the coffee, but have it made & ready too?

I'd get me one of those chickens!!

Hey, guys, I was busy all day digging, and so I didn't check on the chicks until about a half hour ago. Rangi had hopped out of the brooder, but I didn't check on them at all today and so I don't know when she did it. She's been without food, water, or heat for however long, though, and she was acting pretty lethargic and felt a bit lighter. I got water in her, but she won't eat. Does anyone know if I should try to get food in her tonight, or if I should just let her sleep and see if she'd better by morning? I'm worried sick about her. She's my baby. :(

ETA: She seems okay now that she's had some water in her for a little while. I'm just going to let her sleep and hope for the best. :fl

She was still kind of acting strange this morning, walking around stiffly with her beak open and her tail straight up in the air. She is scratching and eating at the feeder now, though. I added vitamin/electrolyte powder to their water. Hoping this and getting food in her will get her going again. :fl

A Request from a Newbie: If possible, could everyone please add the breed abbreviation along with your photos, especially chicks? I am feeble-minded and can't remember who had what breed and the chicks are really hard to tell. Hopefully, this may also help the other newbies who need remedial identification help. haha danand's chick is adorable and pipd's are displaying some very interesting feather designs.

I woke up to a surprise this morning, too. Round about 6 am my little 23-day-old Easter-egger bantam crowed! It sounded like 'Chiiiir-eep!' :th I knew he was a boy already, but I've never had one crow this early!

Hi everyone. New to this thread. I live in southern Brown County. Have had my 7 girls for a year, and have my first broody hen. I got some eggs from a friend in New Castle, and it's been a week. Hope to have some babies in 2 more. I'll start going back through this thread for all of the great info I'm sure is here. Thanks for starting it.

Welcome zippy! Our family loves going to Brown County to the state park. Even though it takes awhile (OK, a couple of weeks...) I would recommend starting at the beginning of the thread & reading through all the posts. I did that when I joined about a month or so ago and it was really helpful. I felt like I got to know everybody & there's lots of good stuff buried in those posts. Happy reading!

My coop is the same size as yours, and you would be amazed at how much rainwater you can collect off it in a short time. The gutter on the low part of the roof feeds into a 5 gal bucket that has a line to my chicken nipple setup. I had to put an overflow hose on the bucket to get rid of the excess water since it fills so quickly. Thinking about figuring out a way to have a second bucket in the system for when it get's drier this summer.

Is it ok to give the chickens rain water? If that's the case I'm definitely going to set this up! I was going to do a large rain barrel for water anyway so I wouldn't have to fill it up as much. I got a handful of drinking cups that we are going to attach to some PVC and use the barrel for water storage. The less I have to drag the hose out there the better!

Rangi is behaving just fine at this point! :th She's just trying to give me a heart attack or something! (I have a sheet hung above the brooder now so she can't fly out anymore, the little troublemaker!)
