I would not put them in lockdown yet since you have different days. The different days things increases the importance of waiting until you see an internal pip. it does mean more candling which increases the risk of a bad outcome but a day 15 egg really should not have its humidity increased and it still needs turning. I would just candle the eggs that are on day 18 and check them no more often than every 6 hours. It is too bad you do not have another incubator to use for lockdown. But if it helps many people don't lockdown till day 19 or 20 while they wait for their eggs to have an internal pip.

Ohh and congrats for making it this far. The waiting is stressful at times.

One of the silkie chicks had an eye matted shut when I got home today. After warm compresses and rinsing it with an eye wash I got when I worked a vets office it finally opened up. It had some gunky stuff I pulled out with tweezers. I'm hoping it was just a small piece of bedding or something that irritated it. Always seems to be something! Lol

Ohh and the other chickens are pecking the afro of my tolbunt roo! I've tried blucote the first two days I noticed it and now smearing pine tar on it twice a day. I don't want to separate him as it maybe harder to move him back in with his original "brooder" mates.

My little Lemon had the worst goopy eyes as a chick. I would wash her eyes out 3 times a day and pull off all the crusties and goop I could. She couldn't close her eyes for probably a week. Still don't know what caused it, but after constant observations and colloidal silver applied 3 times a day it finally cleared up. I was probably a good 3-4 weeks of mothering her. I think part of the problem was that fuzz and dust would irritate it, then it would get stuck open and get even more irritated. It was a vicious cycle. She's right as rain now though.

So who is going to the Wolf lake swap this Saturday?

I'm thinking of heading over early in the AM and doing a quick breeze through.

Hey, guys, I was busy all day digging, and so I didn't check on the chicks until about a half hour ago. Rangi had hopped out of the brooder, but I didn't check on them at all today and so I don't know when she did it. She's been without food, water, or heat for however long, though, and she was acting pretty lethargic and felt a bit lighter. I got water in her, but she won't eat. Does anyone know if I should try to get food in her tonight, or if I should just let her sleep and see if she'd better by morning? I'm worried sick about her. She's my baby.

ETA: She seems okay now that she's had some water in her for a little while. I'm just going to let her sleep and hope for the best.

This happened to Annabeth. Checked on her before bed and everyone was tucked in, then no Annabeth the next morning. No idea how long she was out, but after about 30 minutes back in the brooder she was fine.

Either your husband is only 3 feet tall or that is one heck of a gigantic coop. Will it have an elevator?

You found me out. My husband is a little person.

We sometimes go overboard with our projects.... The high side has 6 feet of interior clearance and the low side sits at 4. Figure it didn't add to much cost to make it a little taller. Might even make the inside a bit of a 2 story.

Ha. Give up on the coop cost, just build it like you want it. Our budget for our coop was ~$350, ended up like $1,000. I have reciepts to prove it. Are you keeping your coop receipts? Good idea to remind you how much that first egg costs lol.

I figure ignorance is bliss at this point. I'd rather not know how much that first egg cost us. I think I'll have it dipped in gold!

Your coop is coming along. You don't have to worry about your chickens in the coop while you build your run, think of all the additional space they will have. Unless you let them run around in your basement. Ours were in storage bins until they moved into the coop, they were in the coop about a week before the run was complete. We did have a hastily built chicken tractor for some outdoor activity.

That is a very good point. They will have way more room than the box they are currently in!

Hi everyone. New to this thread. I live in southern Brown County. Have had my 7 girls for a year, and have my first broody hen. I got some eggs from a friend in New Castle, and it's been a week. Hope to have some babies in 2 more. I'll start going back through this thread for all of the great info I'm sure is here. Thanks for starting it.

Welcome! Good luck with the hatch! If you'd like to be added to our member list just send me a PM and I'll get you taken care of. I love Brown County.

Good Morning Everyone. We had a strange occurance yesterday. My little chicks were in the garden (fenced to 7 1/2 feet) and under the coop (enclosed with hardware cloth, but not yet burried). I found my garden gate open and my cockerel, Peanut Butter, just sitting on the ground inside of the fence. All over the yard outside of the garden I found clumps of his feathers laying around. I am not sure if it was an larger animal or maybe he flew out and one of the new roos went after him. If the little roos went after him, would they leave clumps of feathers? If it was something other than a roo, wouldn't it have taken him or one of the other chicks? My gate was closed when I came in the house to change. My cat was out, but she has never shown interest in them or any other animal. Its perplexing.

I'm so relieved, too! I've only known her 3 weeks, but I'd be devastated if anything happened to her! I know she's better now, though, because I picked her up to check on her and she immediately hopped to my shoulder. Such a little stinker!

Welcome to the Indiana Thread zippy! What are the beautiful birds on your avatar?

Note to pipd~ Thanks for the IDs on your chicks! I haven't heard of some of those breeds. I love the patterns and textures.
P.S. Rangi's Indiana Fan Club is happy to hear of her speedy recovery!
