INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Exciting morning, I was able to watch an egg hatch for the first time in my life! Wow it was a very neat thing to see. I noticed one of my white chicks pacing outside, then she went inside to her roost and paced. The she was off to the nesting box, she tried all 4 and finally settled in the first one. About 10 minutes later there it was so small and perfectly white! And this is from the one I was sure was a roo. She had a large comb from day 1. Still not sure what she is, lol, but she is a she! So I have gotten 5 eggs. 3 whites and 2 green. Nothing more from the EE, unless she has opted to lay them outside.

The girls have all settled down in the yard and coop. The coop is separated 8x8 for the big girls and 4x8 for the small girls, but the yard is all open to them with plenty of hiding places for the small girls who still get picked on by the big girls. At about 845 pm all the girls head to their side and get settled in. The only problem I see is that the small girls roost on top of the door. We have a screen door and a full door for use during winter which we leave open, and those little stinkers actually roost on the door itself. When I take them down and close the door they actually fly and try to roost up on the 2x4's. Yea there is not enough room so the hit the wall and fall to the floor only to try and try again. So, we have for now decided to leave it open. They won't all fit up there for much longer, so trying to figure out a way to put the roost higher to make them happy.

Zippy- welcome. I live in Decatur co, so not too far. And I work in Brown co every once in a while.

Mother- yes it does look like a tarantula!!!

Hogster- when I got my adult EE's they would roost on the screen door of the coup too. So I'd have to catch them and put them in the coup!!

Here's a more whole shot. I have 2 that look almost the same. One is a bit darker than the other. And their top nots are soft, whereas the one with the white head, his is sort of firmer to pet?? Not sure that makes sence. Cracks me up that these were in a Banty bin, at 1.5 weeks old they are already big!!

Pipd- I'm so glad Rangi is ok! One of my SFH chicks looks a lot like her. I had a dream in the few hrs I slept on Sunday night that my chick was named Rangi too. Don't worry, it won't be :)

Zippy-Welcome!

John and Sally- I bought 5 nipples from Amazon yesterday. They came earlier this afternoon

Well, my dogs have met some of the chicks. I was cleaning out the brooder and took one chick out to them at a time while they were outside. They did very well considering one of them THINKS she's a bird dog (But she's not, she's a mini dachshund). My other dog did very well.

I think its time to built a brooder roost. One of the SFH (Rangi-lookalike) was roosting on the edge of the box I put them while I was cleaning earlier. .

Wow! You Hoosiers talk a lot!! LOL! I can't keep up with all the news...

This is what I walked out to a little while ago, Alpacas make good protectors. Who knew?!
Afternoon nap time for everyone.

The wyandottes and my cochin are always out first.

Then Booker my silkie cockerel hanging out with Gus and Jules and Lavender.

The only ones not out are my little white ee mixes who are taking advantage of a quiet lunch away from the others.

No hawk has the nerve to mess with these girls. :)

Can't leave the babies out.. :)

I still have a hard time keeping up. I blame most of it on my phone. I think I may just have to suck it up and get internet in the house. But no t.v.s! Lol I see people talk about the members list but Im still not sure what it is? Please excuse my ignorance but I'm pretty sure I don't get to see everything on the site. I can switch from mobile to desktop and everything with completly change but I can't use any of the functions :( and I guess the pictures I managed to upload the other day was a fluke bc iv not been able to do it again? Pipd glad your baby is ok she's adorable. Quin. I like the coop and agreen you could collect a good amount of water off of just a small edge it doesn't take much. You would be suprised. Danand I'm not sure what kind or chick you have but its to cute! And zippy welcome this is a great place if you have better luck with your electronics than I do lol

Sorry I actually had a question but got side tracked. My rooster is plucking my hens clean. ( I'm over run with roos that's the main problem) I right now only have 3 buff hens and 1 buff roo but he does not give them a break. And the OEGBs are after them all the time bc all their hens are setting or raising chicks right now and seperated. But they will grab them trying to catch them and pluck feathers. What should I do? I don't have a place I could seperate them unless I cage my girls. How long will it take for feathers to grow back? And should I be putting something on them? I just feel like giving up :(
