INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Mother2Hens replies:
METAL nipples don't seem very comforting! And chickens don't nurse! Poor chickens get all kinds of tricks played on them from wooden eggs to metal nipples. haha But seriously, I know that many of you have commented on how great that type of watering system is. I have just wondered if that type is a pain to clean-- because of mold forming in all of the little crevices of the nipple and algae in the PVC pipe, especially during hot, humid weather. Seems like you'd have to clean it with a bleach solution often, but that's just speculation.
Any comments about keeping the nipple type of waterers clean?
That's the thing about the nipples -- they don't have to be cleaned. The excess water drips off. No contamination. The nipple is rinsed off each time it is used. The metal is stainless steel.

If you want to clean it occasionally with a toothbrush, I suppose you could, but it is unnecessary. The chickens adjust to the waterers within a day or so.

Unless you are filling the bucket with pond water, cleaning is not needed, ever.

Have you ever made your own? It's significantly cheaper than buying it in the store. Take a bottle and a handful of full vanilla beans, fill it with vodka or rum, and let it sit for 3-4 months min. Then replenish with vodka or rum (depending on what you started with) as you use it. They sell kits for it as well.

After 3 or 4 months, if I remembered that I made it, I would never be able to remember where I left it. By the time I found it, it would be winter and I wouldn't need it anymore. By spring, once again, I wouldn't be able to find it again................

For those of you that free range, how old were your birds when you started letting them out of the run. We are hoping to get our run finished up this weekend, but I'm sure the chickens will decimate that of everything green in no time.

6 weeks. Just so they were big enough to not get through the 2x4" openings in the fencing. They've been out for a month or so and haven't done any damage to the grass, yet. Except for the area right next to the barn wall. 2 ft strip of grass is gone there.

The mind boggles with how some people live. Letting life slide by sucking on everyone else to keep their meager existence.
I cringe when guest arrive unannounced and I have not ran my vacuum. I hate the front yard which sits in a state of limbo until I can muster enough time to move my river rock.
The fact people do not even see how bad they live or do not care their animal is a nuisance and how it effects other... well.. it gets my goat.... I could rant for hours on this subject.

Sorry your helpful efforts led to your Millie suffering. Makes a person not want to help others out.

I don't fault people for being of modest circumstances or for having a "lived in" house.

I do fault filth and not even trying.

hope my next hatch will be good but wont be hatching anymore tell later in the summer
Some breeders use sons to breed sisters, half sisters even their mothers when they are trying to enhance a good feature. As an earlier poster mention, a roo will mate with just about any female he can.
No, maybe some day but right now I'm keeping my house free of any strong drinks even for cooking purposes.

My suggestion is Victoria, for the queen who had both a Golden Jubilee (50 years) and a Diamond Jubilee (60 years).

M2H-- I concur with HouseKat- I like Victoria the best because not only she had 2 Jubilees, it goes with Violet and since they are "sisters" since you brought them in at the same time, the similar names that start with "V".

I had 10 pages to read before I got to the end but I did look up some Royal names-- some have been mentioned already

Constance
Diana
Amelia
Bridget
Charlotte
Eleanor
Victoria*****

John/OldSalt--- I hope Millie is doing better today, especially with imitation vanilla extract rubbed in some special spots :)

The first thing I thought of after reading your description about what happened (after hoping she was okay) was what in the heck was the owners doing while you spent a LONG time trying to get their meanie of a dog off your dog?? You kicked it until you sprained your ankle then got on the ground and tried to pry him loose. Did they just stand there with their thumbs up their behinds and watched you?

sorry I'm outraged about this because I would be absolutely MORTIFIED if any of my dogs bit another dog or person. They have gotten bitten several times and I had to swat and scream until they got off my dogs-- I know how you feel. But I have a temperamental dog who I am VERY careful with around other dogs and people because I don't always know what she may do so I take precautions.

Anyway, I am beginning to agree with my husband about the world turning into "Idiocracy" anyone ever see it? Its a silly movie but basically in a couple hundred years, everyone is "stupid" beyond words. I think your neighbors might end up being the royal family of a world of idiots, John. Please tell me they haven't reproduced??

My girls are usually 2-3 months old before I let them out to free-range with the big girls. (To be clear, my definition of free-range is to just open the gate to the chicken yard and let them roam free all over the property.)

Thanks Pip, that's my definition as well. I think if we get their run up this week, I'll keep them contained to the coop and run for about a week until I'm confident that they know where to go and then I'll open their doors to freedom. I'm just a little nervous since a hawk got one of my neighbors chickens last week while they were out during the day. Safe to say there is one less hawk to prey on my chickens now.

Oh c'mon John, I'm sure your memory isn't quite that bad yet.
