I love this conversation!!!! It sooooo something that my DBF would say to me I told him I was decorating the inside of the coop. Thanks for this post, I needed it!

Also, I agree with others who like this "coop raising" idea!!!

Me too on the coop raising. I'd love to help someone else if they'd watch my kids. Yea for chicken coops!!

My babies enjoyed their first time outside today! Exploring their mini-jungle:

Unfortunately, they only got 15-20 minutes out there because some stray kittens showed up looking for a meal. :/ Got the babies in safe and sound and let them romp on some old towels for a while.

During this time, Rangi the troublemaking Ancona picked up an old habit again.

Haha. Love your pictures!.

Alright, what can I do to help comfort a chick that is brooding by itself until I can find some chicks? I stole some of the dogs stuffed animals (they were new from the closet, I have a shredder and defluffer so I buy in bulk when they are on sale or clearance lol) and put in with it. He is still chirping away. I'm going into town and buying a mirror and going to try that as well. Any other suggestions? I guess it's a simple solution if I could just find some chicks locally in breeds I'm already working with lol.

Hi All,

I have about 40 cans of paint in the basement that I want to get rid of (don't ask where they came from, I'm not sure).  So, instead of buying yet another thing for this chicken coop, I decided to see if I could mix enough of them together to come out with something not horrible for the inside.  I just mixed together an assortment of greens, light blues, and cream colors and came out with a pretty decent light green.  I would have preferred just a plain off-white, but whatever.  :idunno  So, I'm thinking this is pretty cool and I take a sample of the color down to show my husband (who just got off a horrible conference call).
He said: What am I looking at?
She said: Paint for the inside of the coop
He said: Really?  For the inside? Pause....Let me get this straight. You came down here to show me a color sample that goes on the inside of the coop, that only the CHICKENS will EVER see?
She said: Yea, I think its pretty good. Do you think it needs to be lighter?
He said: Please tell me you don't actually want my opinion. PLEASE"

I think he's had enough of the chicken coop.  My poor husband.  :lau
I'm so lucky he hasn't barbequed them yet. I think I just need to work on my timing.
Happy Friday Everybody!

I just read this to my husband. He is totally with yours on this. He started laughing and asked if you were a relative he had not been introduced to yet.

Ok, I just read the guineas will know my chickens off their roost at night.... is that true?
I have both chickens and guineas. Though they don't roost together the guineas will go into the coop and hang out with the chickens. They also free ramge together. Iv never seen the guineas pick on my chickens. They just go about their buisness in their little clicks and ignore each other. I had also heard that they will fight and that the guineas would beat up cickens. But I also heard guineas will pick a mate and stay with that mate their whole lives but I found that to be untrue. Are you wanting to just roost them together at night and let them free range them during the day? Or do you have a chicken yard your wanting to put all of them in during the day?

Ideally, I want everyone to free range during the day and return to the coop at night. We have at least 20 acres of woods that run behind our property so I'd like to know everyone is safe and sound during the night.

I had guineas with my chickens. I had the Kees locked up in the coop for many weeks so they would imprint it as home. They would coop up at night with the chickens. It seemed like once by hit sexual maturity the males started harassing the chickens. Between that and teaching the hickey how to cross the road, I decided to sell the guineas. When I get a new house with more acreage and off the road, I'll get more guineas.

Just a reminder, I'm running a chicken train from just south of Fort Wayne to the Greencastle area this coming Friday. If you need something picked up or dropped off, get in touch with me. I'm specifically going to Sally's (Littleameraucanamom) house to pick up chicks. I'm already picking up some guineas and hatching eggs for other forum members. Sally and Heather (sebrightmom) have beautiful birds!

I also still have the Birchen Marans pair or trio available and can deliver only route down. They are 4-5 weeks old with feathered legs. All are black with the exception of a blue roo.

I don't think you should have any issues free ranging them together. I'm not positive about them roosting together though I hope someone else can bebe more helpful on that subjest. And I agree keep them locked up for a coupleweeks until they are use to that being their roost. Good luck I hope it works out

Ok I wasnt hearing things earlier.I went in to check the temp and saw an egg move, but I thought i bumped the incubator.I had to watch it rattle around a few times to convince myself that i wasnt bumping it.I stood there for about 10 minutes lol.
