INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

We were given a rooster when our chicks were about 6 weeks old. I thought he would squash them. I'm sure it happens. Hopefully your turkey will not go back to broody for a while and take care of the other chick.

She does seem to be doing ok. Finally off the nest which is wonderful.
Seemes to be really vigilant of the chick and was rather upset with me going in the pen to look for the other chick.
I think she is going to be a great mom

I was in our chicken run before we covered it and a hawk swooped down not 10 ft away from me and tried to get a chicken. A high pitch scream scared it off and it dropped the chicken but we got a net real fast after that.

Mom told me that 30+ years ago chickens came up missing. No signs of fowl play

. She said she was standing in the chicken yard when a hawk landed on a chicken not 6 feet from her. She yelled and the hawk flew off without the chicken. She doesn't recall what they did to stop it.

My neighbors and I have an understanding about protecting our chickens. We've had a few hawks go "missing".
Make sure they can't be found on your property. $5000 fine, even if someone else has shot it and it flew onto your property to die. Conservation officers need no warrant or probable cause to come onto your property and look around for potential violations.

I have heard of people who would drop problematic carcasses over a remote bridge minus the fingerprint laden plastic bag to avoid this situation.

Ok guys I really need some help. I trued posting this in the correct thread but have got 0 replies. I have done tons of reading but am having no luck finding answers. My poults are dying and idk why. Thursday evening I noticed poo that I thought looked odd so after an hour of looking at poo pictures decided it was normal. The next day I had a dead 1

none had acted ill they were all eatinf and drinking just fine ect. I took the remaining chicks to their day pen not an hour later another died. More research still clueless but decided to add electrolytes to their water and a tiny bit of DE to their food thinking if its a parasite that would take care of it. Today they are all very active but 1. But he's eating good drinking just fine and not excessively. But their poo has changed drastically when I cleaned the brooder this morning and took them to the day pen there was solid white poo puddles didn't really look wormy though. And the other poos looked like the pile I was originally concerned about. I wish I would have taken pics! I gave more electrolytes today. But I'm kina at a loss as to what to do bc nothing I reqd or seen looks or sounds like what I'm facing. This is the first time I've lost any birds to illness or disease and I don't want to loose more.does anyone have any ideas what this could be based on my horrible description?
You don't seem to be getting much help from the folks in the know, so I'll give it a long shot.

I recall my Dad telling me about my Grandpa raising turkey poults. It started raining and Grandpa hollered at the kids and said to come quick. He ran out to the chicken yard and they all grabbed up the young turkey poults and put them in the hen house. He said that turkey poults are so dumb that they will look up at the sky to try to figure out where the water drops are coming from. They will drown doing this. Or, possibly, catch pneumonia from the water intrusion into their lungs.

Don't know if this is even true, but he believed it. Dad said they lost several poults that day.

We've had a lot of rain showers. H*ll, it might explain it. Free advice. Double your money back guarantee.

I have heard this also but have not had any drown. Lol I have had them since the 29th of may they were about a week old when I got them. I keep them inside in a brooder at night. During the day they are out in a hotbox is what its called but its just an over sized cage with legs. I let them have free range in the coop for a couple days when it was nasty out. Just so they would have more room to run around since they couldn't be ourside. Someone ask me about it possibly being bkack head but if that was the case wouldn't my older turkeys (13 months) and peafowl have it too? The peafowl roost with the chickens and all my birds free range together. Did I mention I had 6 I'm down to 4 now :( one still acts off. But he made it through the night and today so I'm hopefull. He's eating and drinking fine. I just don't no?

Another thought is that it could be Marek's Disease.

Marek vaccine comes in 1000-dose vials. It costs $17. If you have 20 chicks, it costs a buck each. But it is a preventative, not a cure.

I thought it only affected chickens, but apparently it also affects turkeys.

If that is what it is, brace yourself. It will be bad from what I have read.

Good luck,

John

Well now we know how old they are what you are doing with during the day. Might help narrow thins down a little.
Someone had mentioned the gnats being a possibility. Not sure how obvious they would be. Could try the vanilla others have used. I am not familiar with this issue so I can not offer firm advice. I know it won't be long before others chime in with suggestions too.
If there is a base in that 'hotbox' I would try cleaning it out completely and disinfecting it. If it is situated on the ground, could try moving it to another patch of grass.
I assume you do not treat your yard? Grub control, fertilizers etc... Maybe the neighbors do and there is some run off.

Not sure what I am suggesting is helpful, just trying to give a run down of possible issues.
