INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Quote: Once a poult decides it doesnt feel good, they don't try. I got my BBW from meyer, was late picking them up at the post office (moms dialsis went badly that day) and am sure they chilled. I had 3 that acted off, refused to eat and drink and died that day. If they get a chill they just "give up". What feed are you giving, They need a higher protein food to thrive well. Trying to think of anything it may be.

riverfishin~ Welcome to the Indiana Thread! What kinds of chickens do you have?

hogster/Deb ~ That's hopeful news that the others aren't ill. Keep up posted. We're all thinking of you-- in fact, I was in bed last night thinking (instead of sleeping, as I usually do) about what a terrible experience you are going through.

I thank you so much for the well wishes! I'm trying to look at it this way. Atleast I'm learning.....lol. Yes it sucks, and I can't do anything about it. Except what I am doing. Learning and reading and reading and learning some more. We do love our birds, I'm just hoping that we can keep things going. I talked with my neighbor today, the one who had chickens in the past. He just said some died and others were decapitated. He suspected an owl, and didn't think too much about why the others died. He is also the neighbor who is raising turkeys atm. And he gave me a pair of them. To try and see if having them in the same run will help with the MD. He doesn't even know what kind they are. He feeds the cracked corn and they forage. These two turkeys are going to be so spoiled. Already for dinner, they got grower feed with some scratch on it so they would eat it. Once they got down to the food, they didn't want to stop eating. We will be building them a small pen tomorrow. But for the night they are in a separate area of the chicken coop. The girls were not to sure what to think that is for sure.

Here 's where we're at.

thank you everyone for your suggestions links and making me think of things iv not thought of previously. The hot box is a wire cage. Basically an over sized rabbit hutch. Droppings go straight to the ground. Gnats have been a nightmare! I had not treated the babies. I hadn't noticed them being bothered so I just didn't think about it. I will check them for bites. They didn't have any on their heads or faces that I noticed but then again I wasn't looking for that specifically. I feel horrible I didn't think about that. Everything else on the property smells like vanilla already. Including the dogs. Old Salt I looked at the link you posted (thank you for that) you are right it does sound horrible. I don't think that's it but I've said that about everything so far and it has t be something. When I took them in this evening the one who was acting differently earlier today was acting just fne but I still want to no what the problem is/was. On another note sorry o everyone else who is having problems with illness/ diseases, hatching problems, issues with hawks and owls, and to thos who has experienced other losses. I no there have been some but I believe ie missed a couple posts..I will try to catch up soon.

I don't know if it
Ok, just got home from a baby shower and Annabeth is missing. Everyone was free ranging but she is just gone. I can't find any feathers, all the other chickens are fine. What could have happened? Do chickens ever get lost?
s

My hen stopped coming in when everyone else did and I thought a coon got her. I wasn't able to find any feathers but I'm sure it was still possible. On the third day she showed up at the water bowl and left again. My best guess is that she's sitting on eggs somewhere. We have to find her before she hatches babies! I hope it's something like that instead of a predator to your hen.

vicki chicki~ Sorry to hear about your baby chick. : - (
hogster~ I'm no authority, but it seems like if Marek's disease is the culprit, your other chickens would have been affected by now(?) Just wondering why the turkeys in the run would help? I'm not knowledgable about all of that.
Mr.Tattoohead~ Enjoyed your videos! Great coop and adorable young chickens. : - ) You might want to put a carbinger clip or something raccoon-proof on your nesting box opening. A raccoon could flip that hook up too easily.
Quinstar~ Glad your story had a happy ending! My RIR has ADHD and easily becomes distracted and wanders off on her own ---in her own little world. When I have her with me outside of the fenced-in yard, I have to keep my eye on her. She's the one I recently spotted across the street and three doors down, munching on flowers in the yard with the most perfect landscaping in the neighborhood! yikes
My Jubilee Knows She's Royalty
My daughter read that chickens like to look at themselves in mirrors, so she stuck a mirror in the yard the other day. I happened to catch Princess Adeline admiring herself today! I must say that she's also quite intelligent because she occasionally looked behind the mirror to see where her twin was. I bet that freaked her out because the other side of the mirror was magnified. haha Meanwhile, Violet the Lavender was enjoying the nice temps today. (Disregard the weeds and long grass-- that's where DH put sod after the hens ate all of the grass. DH is so glad to have grass back that he apparently can't bear to cut it. ha)

Violet is actually a week older and a size larger, but you can't tell that in the photos. Adeline has passed the scraggly stage and is getting fluffy.
danand is the one who suggested the name Adeline, which means "Noble." It should actually mean "Vain." haha
