INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Adeline admired herself for probably close to 20 minutes, occasionally checking the other side of the mirror. Violet dozed and on and off. : - )

[rule]hogster~ I'm no authority, but it seems like if Marek's disease is the culprit, your other chickens would have been affected by now(?) Just wondering why the turkeys in the run would help? I'm not knowledgable about all of

From what I understand, and its not a whole lot at this point, turkeys have a natural resistance to one of the six strains of MD (not sure if i'm saying this right) And because of that they somehow use turkeys to make one of the three types of vaccines. Our runs literally are maybe 12' away from each other and they run parallel to each other. MD is also airborne as well as straight contact with infected bird or we can carry their dander on our clothes and shoes. It may be because their runs are within spitting distance of each other is why I at this point have such a small outbreak. (Not that I'm complaining mind you) So thinking along those lines, if I actually put the turkeys IN their run, maybe it will lesson the severity. Unless or until they have another strain. At this point I have 2 of the types in my flock, the paralysis and the ocular. So I'm probably grabbing at straws but hoping it will do something.

If you read the third link that old salt posted, it explains the whole how and why turkeys and MD thing works.

Very good read ther old salt, thanks!
I just checked your profile and discovered you are "Debbie".

I thought you were a guy!

Let me change my previous reply.

"You are very welcome, dear lady".

vicki chicki~ Sorry to hear about your baby chick. : - (

Mr.Tattoohead~ Enjoyed your videos! Great coop and adorable young chickens. : - ) You might want to put a carbinger clip or something raccoon-proof on your nesting box opening. A raccoon could flip that hook up too easily.
Quinstar~ Glad your story had a happy ending! My RIR has ADHD and easily becomes distracted and wanders off on her own ---in her own little world. When I have her with me outside of the fenced-in yard, I have to keep my eye on her. She's the one I recently spotted across the street and three doors down, munching on flowers in the yard with the most perfect landscaping in the neighborhood! yikes
My Jubilee Knows She's Royalty
My daughter read that chickens like to look at themselves in mirrors, so she stuck a mirror in the yard the other day. I happened to catch Princess Adeline admiring herself today! I must say that she's also quite intelligent because she occasionally looked behind the mirror to see where her twin was. I bet that freaked her out because the other side of the mirror was magnified. haha Meanwhile, Violet the Lavender was enjoying the nice temps today. (Disregard the weeds and long grass-- that's where DH put sod after the hens ate all of the grass. DH is so glad to have grass back that he apparently can't bear to cut it. ha)

Violet is actually a week older and a size larger, but you can't tell that in the photos. Adeline has passed the scraggly stage and is getting fluffy.
danand is the one who suggested the name Adeline, which means "Noble." It should actually mean "Vain." haha

Yes very funny! I will have to put a mirror out there for them.

On another note, we ate our first eggs this morning:

Old Salt~ My Dad used to say that he was a "Wastebasket of Knowledge" because he always amazed us by being able to answer any question. I think a lot had to do with age-- that's one of the few things that's going about getting old.
jchny~ vickichicki must be flattered having a fellow Englishwoman named after her. : - )

Ugh. Woke up to a buff orps that had her head stuck at some point in the night. She was dead when we found her. She was definitely my favorite :( .Then the yellow, turned white chicken that the kids HAD to have a while back that I've been babying from day one died also. She was one of the sickly ones I bought at Tractor Supply. We got her this far so I hoped I could pull her through she ate like she was always starving, never walked right, and slept 90% of the time. Not sure if she was just THAT sick/hurt or if it was because I'm so new with chickens.
