INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

You could use the trick that people who raise fighting cocks use. They tie a non-slip knot in a rope around the rooster's leg and stake the other end. Food and water are placed within reach. The guy who I stumbled on had a 55-gallon plastic drum with a door cut in the side so the bird could get out of the weather. It's been 20+ years since I saw it, but as I recall, the rope was about 3 feet long. The chickens were placed just out of the reach of each other. He probably had 30 of them. It looked like a barrel farm.

Anyhow, even though we all find cock fighting reprehensible, you could use their stake out technique to corral your roosters. They wouldn't be cooped up in a cage. Chickens quickly accept restrictions. The hens can present or avoid at their discretion. If you use a proper non-slip knot, the rooster is unharmed.

I saw some guy that have a cock fighting farm. He had about 100 barrels and the rooster were in bad conditions.

Is it my imagination (unless this is actually typical), or are there a weird number of chickens dying unexpectedly & unexplainably? I'm new enough to having chickens -- just over a year now -- that I don't know if this is normal. That said, it reminds me of a number of years ago when an awful lot of people in the Indiana rabbit world (we raise & show rabbits) were having huge numbers of rabbits in their herds just up & die. It was finally discovered that at least one brand of rabbit feed that a lot of people were using contained moldy corn which was toxic to the rabbits if I remember correctly. It would be interesting to know what brand of feed was used with those who had chickens die to see if there could be any connection.

So sorry, AL.

At least you were holding her. I try to hold them or at least make them more comfortable when it's obvious that they're going.

Hi everyone! I have been MIA for the last couple weeks. I got a call for an interview for a dream job-- finally and with preliminary training course on top of catching up on grad school homework and going back to work after my illness proved to be too much to handle.

Its taken me a little while last night and the rest of tonight to get through 2 weeks of posts but I did it! I finally have pictures again of everyone but 1 because I apparently lost count. That will be forthcoming on the my next post. Then off to bed cause I'm zonked.
O I didnt realize they were your neighbors....if it were my neighbors I would of still done it lol.One I have been friends with for about 6 years, the other is kind of crazy and keeps to herself, and the other I don't care for, because my goat got out he was going down the road at 70mph hit it and killed it. It was partically my fault for not fencing them in good enough but if he wouldnt of been speeding he probably could of stopped in time. Also when I used to ride horses I was riding one day and he was on a 4-wheeler and didnt slow down at all freaked the crap out of my horse and we were on gravel and it kicked up some gravel and hit my horse which made it freak out more.that has happened several times. All this was before I moved and then I moved a few miles down the road.Guess who ended up being my neighbor about 1 year later...him!Oh well I could have a worse neighbor.

And on the whole rooster subject.I had some ads on cragslist and another place. One day I got a call and anwsered it.It was like some guy from india or something and his accent was very real and I couldnt understand a thing he was saying. All I got out of our whole conversation was rooster heads.I told I couldnt understand anything he was saying multiple times, but it didnt do any good.So I was like ummm I got to go bye. I felt bad but I couldnt talk to him he obviously barley knew any english. Then I get a text from him and it said do you have any roosters left.I didnt so I replied no.But my add never mentioned anything about rooster it was for chicks and hatching eggs.I guess all chickens are rooster now lol.I have to many roosters lol.
I watched a couple You-tube videos where they said rooster heads are a delicacy in certain cultures (so are chicken legs-- the ones with the talongs) so this might where he was coming from ??

Yesterday I was with my kids at Hobby Lobby and found this nice little piece of art for the coop. Yes, I understand the chickens don't care, but I still have to look at it! Happy Friday everyone!

LOVE this!!!

I know Mother 2 Hens is normally the one for posting amusing pictures. However I came across this and had to share.

reminds me of the tom turkey that tried to hump my husband in April-- he certainly liked him because he was displaying and doing some dances for him...too funny :)

I was in our chicken run before we covered it and a hawk swooped down not 10 ft away from me and tried to get a chicken. A high pitch scream scared it off and it dropped the chicken but we got a net real fast after that.
Wow, I hope that the hawks don't hear the gossip that there are chickens around or this might be happening to me someday

You don't seem to be getting much help from the folks in the know, so I'll give it a long shot.

I recall my Dad telling me about my Grandpa raising turkey poults. It started raining and Grandpa hollered at the kids and said to come quick. He ran out to the chicken yard and they all grabbed up the young turkey poults and put them in the hen house. He said that turkey poults are so dumb that they will look up at the sky to try to figure out where the water drops are coming from. They will drown doing this. Or, possibly, catch pneumonia from the water intrusion into their lungs.

Don't know if this is even true, but he believed it. Dad said they lost several poults that day.

We've had a lot of rain showers. H*ll, it might explain it. Free advice. Double your money back guarantee.

This is not funny but I love the stories you tell!

Here 's where we're at.

And the ladies themselves.

awesome!

vicki chicki~ Sorry to hear about your baby chick. : - (
hogster~ I'm no authority, but it seems like if Marek's disease is the culprit, your other chickens would have been affected by now(?) Just wondering why the turkeys in the run would help? I'm not knowledgable about all of that.
Mr.Tattoohead~ Enjoyed your videos! Great coop and adorable young chickens. : - ) You might want to put a carbinger clip or something raccoon-proof on your nesting box opening. A raccoon could flip that hook up too easily.
Quinstar~ Glad your story had a happy ending! My RIR has ADHD and easily becomes distracted and wanders off on her own ---in her own little world. When I have her with me outside of the fenced-in yard, I have to keep my eye on her. She's the one I recently spotted across the street and three doors down, munching on flowers in the yard with the most perfect landscaping in the neighborhood! yikes
My Jubilee Knows She's Royalty
My daughter read that chickens like to look at themselves in mirrors, so she stuck a mirror in the yard the other day. I happened to catch Princess Adeline admiring herself today! I must say that she's also quite intelligent because she occasionally looked behind the mirror to see where her twin was. I bet that freaked her out because the other side of the mirror was magnified. haha Meanwhile, Violet the Lavender was enjoying the nice temps today. (Disregard the weeds and long grass-- that's where DH put sod after the hens ate all of the grass. DH is so glad to have grass back that he apparently can't bear to cut it. ha)

Violet is actually a week older and a size larger, but you can't tell that in the photos. Adeline has passed the scraggly stage and is getting fluffy.
danand is the one who suggested the name Adeline, which means "Noble." It should actually mean "Vain." haha

This is what I can't wait to do in our backyard for my flock :)
Yes very funny! I will have to put a mirror out there for them.

On another note, we ate our first eggs this morning:

My DH almost crapped his pants when I told him how much you spent on the chickens :)
RIP FLO :'(
So sorry to hear about this :(
