INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Unless it is a pet or a show bird for breeding, vets typically cost more than the chicken is worth.
I know vets can be expensive.I am hoping that just for them to tell me what is wrong with her will be under 50 bucks, then after we talk about how much treatment I will decide exactly what I am going to do. I might be able to fix her myself depending on what is wrong. But she is a pet and a show bird. I had her entered in 2 shows one that is going on in a few weeks an one in a few months.

This could very well be something as simple as a vitamin deficiency. I would get some of that poly-vi-sol with out iron from the pediatric section in the store and try that in the mean time.
I already did and am going to keep doing that until I take her to the vet. I just want them to tell me whats wrong with her. She has me stumped. If it is something I can treat I will otherwise I will have the vet do it. I am hoping It is something I can treat, but I have a feeling that since I can''t even figure out what it is, it is not going to be that simple. Crossing my fingers

Hello!! Fellow indiana BYCer here
smile.png
I've been lurking for a bit but now I have a question. We got our very first egg today!!! How do I store it until I'm ready to use it?!? I know store bought eggs are refrigerated obviously but I read somewhere on these forums about someone just leaving theirs out on the counter; so now I'm confused. Thanks!!
Welcome lurker! What John said, about the eggs. I've been keeping ours in a basket out of the 'fridge, I date them with a pencil, but they don't last long around here since they are so fresh and delicious! We are getting about 2/day now, and should start getting more in August. You may have to do some

Lawrence County 4-H fair week! We are a small fair but our kids are just as proud of what they've raised! Don't forget to check out Ironman the mini lop! My 7 year is proud of his buddy, although he already misses him! Next year he's showing chickens too!
I'm so proud of my boy!

Brad- wow those are nice looks cages especially for that money!! Your right you can't buy the materials for that!! Wish I was closer to that swap meet!

Too Fast- well he is a pretty boy!!! I enjoy hearing my Roos crow!! But I don't live in town. And that being said, the majority of my Roos are going to freezer camp too!!

Em Steele- wish your boy good luck!! Love our local Fairs, such good fun and learning!!

I've contacted the swap "owners/promoters/whatever you call them" and they said they can sell cages year round. I really don't want to wait till next show so will likely be getting more in a week or so. If you'd like me to pick one up for you I can do that. Let me know what you are looking for and ill ask if hey have one when I call them. Or if they can make it. We can arrange you getting them from me.

If you don't wash it, it will last for weeks at room temperature. If you refrigerate it, it will last for months. If you have room in your 'fridge, put it there. If not, stack them on the counter. Some folks use a pencil to put the date on their eggs and use oldest first. Store eggs are sometimes months (refrigerated) old.

None of it is critical. No need to refrigerate the golf balls.

John

Thanks! With small children some of those golf balls may make it to the 'fridge

I was honestly surprised to get one so early my girls are just barely 16 weeks! August will bring us more than we can keep up with i think.

I'm not sure if this will help, but when my chick was doing that, I put it in a cat carrier so that it didn't try to move around much, gave it the probiotic/vitamin water, regular feed, and yogurt. After about 4 days it was much better. I still don't know what the problem was.

About the shingles, my husband has them frequently and he's only in his early 40s. They can be treated with the same medicine that is used to treat herpes breakouts (I think its called Zovirax). I am not saying your dad has herpes, its just the same kind of viral medicine. With a prescription from the doctor, the shingles vaccination can be given to a younger person.

So we have been working really hard on the coop for the last week and a half. The inside of the coop is almost done, the outside is getting trimmed and we have started on the run frame. Also, the sand has been delivered for the inside of the coop and run. It was called 23/24 sand and 9.80 per ton with a $50 delivery charge. I got about 5.5 tons to make sure there was enough. Whatever is left will just become part of the pathway to the coop. My MIL came to visit and after two days of being woken up by the roosters in the basement and the roosters in the mudroom (we are overrun with roosters), we moved them out to the coop. Its not entirely ready, but I love my MIL and really didn't want her to lose her mind. Both groups of chickens are playing well together and its working out pretty well. The only problem is the over-abundance of roosters. While we were out working, one of my favored hens (on my avatar) crowed!!! Muffin is a cockerel. My MIL looked at Muffin and said of course, just look at his tail!!! Seriously, this is what happens when you are a newby and don't really know chickens. UGH. So my current count is 3 Full-sized Cockerels, 5 bantam roos, 3 pullets, 2 hens (one of which is MIA because I think she is sitting on eggs somewhere- YIKES). At the very least I need to get rid of two of the cockerels.

Peanut Butter (on the far left) and Muffin (on the right) need new homes if you know anyone who needs a rooster. Otherwise, they may be going to freezer camp. When I purchased them from TSC, they told me that they were Ameraucanas. I have since found out that at least Peanut Butter is an Easter Egger and I think he's going to be gorgeous. I would love to get rid of 4 of the bantam roos too but my DH seems to like them. Maybe I can make them all a smaller separate place to sleep at night when we are done with the big coop and run. It drive me crazy seeing them harass the females.

I am really sorry to hear about everyone's losses and at the same time excited about the new eggs.

Hi smart chicken people!

This is our Salmon Fav named Orange. If you look at where the beak meets where her comb starts, there's a really rough patch. Is this normal or a problem?

Asking because we're first timers and we want to make sure they're happy and healthy. (Likely just being a worrywart)

Thanks!

Also I penned up my 2 large roosters Thursday ( mil is going to send them to freezer camp, but she wants a no rain day) and I now have all but the you he's chickens out and free! They are soooo happy the 2 Roos are not!!!
