INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Im in Indiana for a few days. Looking for Silkies Bedford/Washington area Will be heading back through Evansville. Please pm me on what you have

Hello fellow Hoosiers! I am in Lafayette. Finding my way around chickens and BYC. Loving this new adventure.

I am looking to add some EEs to my flock. Ideally laying hens. If you are in the area and have some you are wanting to part with, please let me know.

Also have a Red Golden Pheasant Cock who may be looking for a new home. Beautiful bird I just do not know if I can give him the best life.

Thank you.

I have had house guests for 5 days and my "baby" turned 20 yesterday and had a swimming party last night. I am exhausted!

Update on Tweedy, my one year old BR (Health problems described on posts 9403 & 9406, pg. 941)
The raw patch between her legs: I still don't know what it is from, but my guess is that she was trying to itch her feet, but pulled feathers in that area. It does look less red following the leg mite eradication procedure that my son and I did two days ago. The leg mite treatment helped immensely and I'm applying vaseline to her feet and legs every night as a follow-up. I need to sanitize the whole coop weekly for several weeks to get rid of the leg mites. After researching different ways to sanitize coops, I decided that I'm going to buy a hand held steam sanitizer (I thought of animal lover's recent post asking about using steam to sanitize the coop) I'm going to research specific brands this evening. I have a steam mop, which is nice because it doesn't leave floors wet. If I washed the wooden coop, it would just add to the general dampness of our shady backyard. Luckily the coop doesn't get wet when it rains, but everything has been so damp that we have green algae and fungus growing on stone areas. (I prefer a drought over too much rain!)

I thoroughly examined my five hens and amazingly the other four don't have leg mites. I didn't see any signs of other types of mites or lice on all five. All of them including my BR have been active and have behaved normally. Today my EE layed a soft shelled egg, which is the first time she's done that. I am guessing it's from the stress of daily ridiculously loud fireworks and five days of house guests. She is a nervous type, so I have the "mother's instinct" that stress caused her soft shelled egg.

I have not applied anything to Tweedy's raw patch because I don't know what to use. I might just put some Vaseline on it when I do her leg/foot treatment later (I like to do it late at night when she can go back to sleep and forget about it --haha). Old Salt, I do prefer natural remedies although if my whole flock was infested with lice or something, I'd probably use something like Sevin.

If anyone has any thoughts or suggestions, please let me know. Thanks.

Went to the Wolf (Lake) Giant animal swap today. It was a great show! Lots of chickens, pheasant, turkeys, peafowl, ducks, emus, fox, etc. I was good and only came back with two cages. Kicking myself for not buying more of them but still have next months to pickup a few more. For anyone needing wire cages, I HIGHLY recommend going to the swap. There is a permanent pole barn on site that has wire cages as well as wire caging materials. And they are DIRT CHEAP! I can not buy the materials make them this cheap. Example of what I'm talking about are these two cages I bought. They are around 24x18 wire cages made of heavy gauge 1/2" hardware cloth (thicker gauge than available at local stores) WITH the poop trays for $15 each. Yes the are short but they would be perfect to use as brooders. I'm currently using these for the quail but plan to pick up about 4 more next month. I almost came home with 30x36 with drip pan made of 1x2 mesh for $30.

excerpt of post by CRSelvey:
So we have been working really hard on the coop for the last week and a half. The inside of the coop is almost done, the outside is getting trimmed and we have started on the run frame. Also, the sand has been delivered for the inside of the coop and run. It was called 23/24 sand and 9.80 per ton with a $50 delivery charge. I got about 5.5 tons to make sure there was enough. Whatever is left will just become part of the pathway to the coop. My MIL came to visit and after two days of being woken up by the roosters in the basement and the roosters in the mudroom (we are overrun with roosters), we moved them out to the coop. Its not entirely ready, but I love my MIL and really didn't want her to lose her mind. Both groups of chickens are playing well together and its working out pretty well. The only problem is the over-abundance of roosters. While we were out working, one of my favored hens (on my avatar) crowed!!! Muffin is a cockerel. My MIL looked at Muffin and said of course, just look at his tail!!! Seriously, this is what happens when you are a newby and don't really know chickens. UGH. So my current count is 3 Full-sized Cockerels, 5 bantam roos, 3 pullets, 2 hens (one of which is MIA because I think she is sitting on eggs somewhere- YIKES). At the very least I need to get rid of two of the cockerels.

I assume that the 23/24 sand is more coarse and is usually used for construction purposes? I posted that link about the benefits of sand recently, and although I've always used play sand mixed with the natural dirt at the bottom of the coop, I was planning to use sand-only when I did a total coop cleaning before introducing my two orp pullets to the coop. Luckily, I noticed Tweedy's leg mites, so I'll have to do several complete coop cleanings before the pullets can join the flock (the leg mites live three weeks). Anyway-- that article said to use washed construction sand, which Lowe's has. My gosh-- 5.5 tons sounds like you'll have enough for a beach!! haha
Here's that link again-- about using sand if anyone is interested.

I loved your MIL story -- and also the one about "Muffin" the male! It reminded me of how silly we were not to notice that our RIR "pullets" had long green tail feathers. We thought that our only real pullet, the infamous Nene, looked weird because she didn't look like the others. Newbies!

Welcome to the Indiana Thread! browncow ~Congrats on your first egg!
Welcome to the Indiana Thread! Kasey
Welcome to the Indiana Thread! Miller Birds
Since both of you are looking for chickens from specific areas, try clicking on the INDIANA BYC'ers Member List at the end of my post. It lists members, their counties, flocks, etc. You could send a PM (Private Message) to people in your area since everyone isn't always online-- although we have a VERY active thread! My next post has more info about it.
PipD~ Hope your foot injury isn't getting you down. You have so many wonderful chronological photos of your beautiful birds that you might consider self-publishing a photo book.
Backyard Bitten~ I just heard a story on NPR the other day about Moscato wine becoming hugely popular because of hip hop music references in songs. I suppose you were doing some hip hop dancing while drinking that wine. hahaha

CCCCHICKENS~ How is your Salmon Favorelle doing? Hope you find some answers from the vet tomorrow. (I'm one who will be taking my chickens to the vet if I need to! A pet is a pet regardless of the cost of the pet.) Good luck and let us know what happens.

Do you want to be listed on the BYC Indiana Members’ List? “Being a member of this thread” just means adding your screen name and flock info, which can be helpful because the list is a spreadsheet format that lets you sort the list by breed, county, or other category. It’s an easy way to find other members who have the same breed you have or who live in a nearby county, etc.

Click on the link below my signature to view the list. Just look at the bottom of the list page for sorting options.

If you’d like to be added, send me a PM (personal message) by simply placing your cursor over my screen name: Mother2Hens, and you will see “Send a PM.” A personal message ensures that your info is added. Please send your screen name, county, and city. Also include the following information about each member of your flock: List each species (chicken, duck, etc.), breed (Barred Rock, etc.), is it a LF (Large Fowl) or Bantam? Quinstar actually adds the info, so you can PM her directly, too-- whatever is the easiest for you.

Indiana County Map for instant member location
If anyone would like a map of your county, like the one on my avatar, I will be happy to provide one. If someone wants a combo map and a chicken or an animal for your avatar, I can put that together for you, just PM me. When I read posts, many times I think “Now where are they from?” I look at the city and still have no idea what part of the state they’re from. The map icon with the county in red because you could quickly glance and see where the member who is posting is from. These avatars are not required-- they are just a free service if you’re interested.

AVATAR UPDATES
If members would like me to change the photo(s) on their avatars, just PM me. Someone might have a picture of a chick that has grown into a hen (or a roo!) and would like to update the photo or someone might like something totally different.

Hello! Is this thread active? I was directed here from a defunct Indiana BYC thread. We plan on starting a flock of six hens next spring or summer. We live in Indianapolis inner-city, in the Irvington neighborhood. Several of our neighbors have small flocks. I am full of questions and expect that I will be using BYC quite a lot.
