INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Hi Toodlesmom! I am new to BYC and chickens, but indeed am learning a lot from this site. Hope by time you start next spring you are totally good to go.

My brother lives in Irvington.

Best of luck to you!

wheezy~ Glad to see you back-- and Congratulations on your marriage! Your coop is wonderful and it's cool that the bantams and ducks are coop mates.

jchny~ Have a great camping trip! Hope it's peaceful. Fireworks are getting on my nerves because they are stressing my chickens and cats. Yesterday, our neighborhood sounded like a war zone. I thought of you and others who live out in the country away from noisy neighbors.
Wheezy congrats to you!
Thanks M2H, we ran into problems and just got in a while ago. Camper is parked there year around and we had wet floors/carpet, and bad leaks.

no fishing again, but we did get to see DH parents.

I just had my first 100% hatch rate. It was only 9 eggs but still after all of the trouble I had with shipped eggs it made my night tonight to come home and see that last one out of the shell.

I am still trying to get there!

Did u guys know chickens can float I was bathing a couple chickens and 1 pick up both his feet and started floating
LOL yes they sure do!

Happy Day! We joined the 'New Egg' group! I noticed one of the silver phoenix pullets was messing around in the nest box earlier today and when I went to look later, here is what I found!

We were given two Welsummer hens that were already laying, and here is the new egg next to one of theirs that I also collected today. It's tiny, just the cutest thing! Also one of those Welsummers has decided she is broody, so I have my first broody hen too. She snuck off and is sitting on two eggs.
Great news on the new ladies, and a broody. Aren't the lil pullet eggs too cute!

I was so excited when I found my first one, I made a point to fry it up for me!

Ran in the house and cooked it! Guess I really wanted to know if I was raising them right and if they were really better...

That was a year ago almost, I cannot eat a store egg anymore

A few birds later I have CMD...Chicken Math Disease

Thanks vickichicki for your suggestions about Tweedy's mystery sore area. My first thought was that it reminded me of a "hot spot" that dogs or cats get from allergic reactions--so maybe she is allergic to something. The perch is smooth. When I looked in my chicken books, the only descriptions of featherless areas like hers seemed to be mites or lice, but the photos showed mites or lice on the area and she doesn't appear to have any. I just posted the info on the Emergency/Disease Forum in case anyone in familiar with the problem. My other hens look fine and they all have acted normally. I will check her out carefully again tomorrow and my other chickens as well. Coincidentally, today I started working on cleaning out the coop today with plans of moving my orp pullets in tomorrow. I'm so glad I noticed Tweedy's health problems! The pullets are going to have to stay in the basement dog crate at night for a while. They actually have a pretty nice set up, so they shouldn't mind.
M2H oh my, i would be so worried too. I have just started catching up. Hope she is ok, My first thought is due to where it is,. Look over the perch where she sits, watch a few days. And if she lays to sunbathe. every bird usually has favorite spots. that's where u will find the answer. I have noticed Mabel, my BR picks herself to lay feathers in a nest too, thats an odd spot tho. Important thing is only treat what you see, the obvious. too many chemicals can counter react. I know you are diligent enough to find the answer, and I will be looking too

CHICKEN POEM

My mother feeds me chicken
The chicken makes me cough
I wish that when she makes it
She'd take the feathers off.

Please get well soon. Will keep you in my prayers. Glad the chicks are ok, but am sure concerned for your foot.
Does anyone know an approx age for EE's to start laying?

I know laying age differs with breeds. My barred Cochin is 22 weeks and her comb and waffles are looking redder everyday so I know she is close.
The EE two of mine are showing redder faces... Just love to know an approx age. Are they late bloomers?
EE's since they are so many mixes you just don't know. My girl Bunny didn't start till this year, she was at least a year old. It makes it harder to judge because her and Mabel were both throw aways, and I took them home.

My RIR are about 15 weeks old, give or take a few days...one of my hens is VERY curious of the nesting boxes. We find her in one a couple times a day. She hops in one, sits for about 3 minutes and hops back out?!?
Oh thats great, plant some fake eggs/golfballs in that nest!

Wow I love hearing that egg-laying song.

Just heard it again, from one of our leghorns. Such a nice, medium sized perfect egg. She usually lays in the morning, and I don't get to hear her since I'm at work then, but did hear it just now.

Chick-chick-chick-chick-chicken, lay another egg for me (singing).
bok bok bok bok bok bok BOgOK!

Its funny to see the roos all running to sit with their girls! Rebel my BA will set there and sing back to his ladies

Quote: I really believe most breeds you have to work at bonding, then being the alpha. For my personal choice I love rotts, and shepards. If they learn early to follow your words and trust you, they will protect what is theirs as an adult. They will also respect and obey you. Any dog needs interaction to know what is ok, and whats unacceptable. Falls back to the owner being responsible enough to train their dog properly.

Quote: Ugh, the guy that owns the bait store has tons, and sets off more over Brookville lake.I can throw a rock and hit the shop from my camper.

Its pretty and all, but most of us are 50+ and really aren't into it anymore. I like the stars, pretty stuff, but wow some of it is louder than a gunshot. My lil pug Sadie I leave home the 4th of july because its quiet at home. What little we heard here had all my critters frightened and hiding.

Went to the Wolf (Lake) Giant animal swap today. It was a great show! Lots of chickens, pheasant, turkeys, peafowl, ducks, emus, fox, etc. I was good and only came back with two cages. Kicking myself for not buying more of them but still have next months to pickup a few more. For anyone needing wire cages, I HIGHLY recommend going to the swap. There is a permanent pole barn on site that has wire cages as well as wire caging materials. And they are DIRT CHEAP! I can not buy the materials make them this cheap. Example of what I'm talking about are these two cages I bought. They are around 24x18 wire cages made of heavy gauge 1/2" hardware cloth (thicker gauge than available at local stores) WITH the poop trays for $15 each. Yes the are short but they would be perfect to use as brooders. I'm currently using these for the quail but plan to pick up about 4 more next month. I almost came home with 30x36 with drip pan made of 1x2 mesh for $30.

WOW I really need to make that swap, Hoping next month. That's a nice size! The cost of the hardware cloth gees it sure went up. I just hatched 47 out of 60 eggs so am good on quail
big_smile.png
total count on them is 61 with the other batches. first round should lay in 2 weeks. I have A&M, Tuxedo, speckled and jumbo. And a few Cinnamon, wow are they tiny at first! They are really friendly sweet lil birds. Going to start sorting the colors and types in a few weeks.
I am still looking for peafowl, Ebay is crazy expensive on eggs. Another good reason to go

Hello!! Fellow indiana BYCer here
smile.png
I've been lurking for a bit but now I have a question. We got our very first egg today!!! How do I store it until I'm ready to use it?!? I know store bought eggs are refrigerated obviously but I read somewhere on these forums about someone just leaving theirs out on the counter; so now I'm confused. Thanks!!
welcome-byc.gif
and so glad u jumped in!!

I do not wash til I need to use them. Put them in the fridge as is, FYI write the date on the egg with a sharpie or pencil. They last a long time unwashed, refrigerated I do also freeze eggs for up to a year. eggs sell very well also!

My poor salmon favorelle can't walk. She just falls over to he side and sticks her wing out to try and catch her or fall face first. I have to check on her all the time to give her food and water. I have been laying a piece of melon and squash by her so if she is hungry she can eat melon contains a lot of water. It dosent look like her leg is broken or anything. She look perfectly fine. I was talking to my sister who knows noting about chickens, but she suggested maybe it was a pulled or streched muscle or tendon or something like that. I am going to call some vets on monday and she if any of them will look at her and if so how much

Good luck, poly vi sol no iron. Hope she is ok

I have a Lavender orp with the same situation and I hope to save him.

Hello fellow Hoosiers! I am in Lafayette. Finding my way around chickens and BYC. Loving this new adventure.

I am looking to add some EEs to my flock. Ideally laying hens. If you are in the area and have some you are wanting to part with, please let me know.

Also have a Red Golden Pheasant Cock who may be looking for a new home. Beautiful bird I just do not know if I can give him the best life.

Thank you.
Hello, we live in Indy just south of Speedway. Yes, chickens are a lot of fun, especially the egg collecting.
Hello! Is this thread active? I was directed here from a defunct Indiana BYC thread. We plan on starting a flock of six hens next spring or summer. We live in Indianapolis inner-city, in the Irvington neighborhood. Several of our neighbors have small flocks. I am full of questions and expect that I will be using BYC quite a lot.
Is this thread active...........don't go away for more than a day or you will have 4 pages to read! This forum really helped us when we started, and there is a lot of info here. Build your coop and run first, then get chickens. Or, get the chicks first and then do a furious coop build like we did, those little cluckers grow so fast ha ha.

Welcome to BYC.

Now this will jinx us, but here in Indy we have not had an official high temp of 90 or more yet this summer, tomorrow looks best but still only forecast for 88. Then a cool down to low 80s. Last summer was so dang hot, so many 90+ days even a few over 100. I remember about 8-10 years ago it never hit 90, here's hoping this will be another year.

Q: What's worse than global warming?

A: Global cooling.

These cages I'm using for quail. When I pickup the new ones, they will be used as brooders for baby chickens. This is the first timeline had chicks on a raised floor and poop pans below. I'm loving it! So much more sanitary.
