INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I am still looking for peafowl, Ebay is crazy expensive on eggs. Another good reason to go :D

Twice a month (2nd & 4th Friday) there is the chicken/small animal livestock auction at the sale barn in Veedersburg.
http://www.veedersburgsalebarn.com
Last month 2 week old peachicks went for $11/each. We even purchased a 1 year old male for $50. Would have been even cheaper, but several people wanted him.

Anyways, Veedersburg is not that far from Indy you might want to give it a try some time.
It is a crazy auction....hundreds of chickens HUNDREDS of rabbits.
Last time it started at 6pm an ended at 1am.

Quick question, now that I have the teenagers and the adult chickens together, their food is also available to all.  If there is chick food and layer food out there, will anyone croak if they get too much of the wrong kind?  In a few weeks they should be eating the same thing so I'm trying not to be concerned, but should I?
you don't want the chicks getting much layer food the calcium is bad for their developing bones. When I'm in that situation I use the chick grower until the chicks are all 16 wks and supplement the layers with oyster shell and then switch foods. Or if you have the means seperate them but I know that's not always easy.

Do you think I could find a dairy goat at said auction? Or is it mainly birds and rabbits? Either way it sounds like too much fun I can see myself getting in to trouble there :)

Hi Julie,
You might be able to find a diary goat on the 'chicken' nights. However, they do have a specific goat auction once a month....first Wednesday I believe.
This past chicken auction there were probably 30 miscellaneous goats. They went cheap since it was not 'goat' night.

It is indeed a very dangerous place. IF I had not been careful, I would have came home with both a baby alpaca and baby donkey last month. Collectively they sold for $150!

Maybe I will see you there sometime.

Question about feed.....I just read that you are supposed to have feed available for your layers all day long. Well, all my birds free range from 8a-9p daily. I give them feed usually in the afternoon. Should I change my feeding plan?

I have a steam mop, which is nice because it doesn't leave floors wet. If I washed the wooden coop, it would just add to the general dampness of our shady backyard. Luckily the coop doesn't get wet when it rains, but everything has been so damp that we have green algae and fungus growing on stone areas. (I prefer a drought over too much rain!)
Right now I'm with you preferring drought over rain! Except I really hated the drought last year & was begging for rain for my garden! We've had an awful time this summer trying to get hay baled. Our first cutting is now a nice stack of baled hay mulch (anybody need some?!), as it got rained on countless times. Our second cutting was done last Wednesday & we're still trying to get it dry as it keeps turning browner & browner. And of course there is a nice green glob on the weather radar screen heading our way -- looks like about an hour or so until arrival! Kinda makes me sick -- we have a nice 1 1/2 acre pasture & we'll probably still have to buy some hay for the rabbits & alpacas

I think for some of us it probably would have been best if we didn't know about another new temptation

If I would have been there with my daughter, we probably would have come home with the baby alpaca (she's been begging for one & what's one more critter?!) and the baby donkey & probably a few more breeds of rabbits (she thinks she needs some of each of the 40 or 50 breeds since she wants to become a rabbit judge)! LOL!

Welcomes going out to all the new people discovering the Indiana thread. We are super active, make sure you check back often or you might just miss something.

Millerbird - Welcome! There are a few people on here who have EE's. Not sure where and if they are selling right now though. In the bottom of members signatures there is a link to 'the Indiana List'. It details who is where and what birds they have. Alternatively I am sure someone will pipe up if they have some too.
When you have some established posts you can use the BST Forum (Buy-Sell-Trade). It requires having a certain amount of posts before you can sell but that might be an option for your Red Golden.

Kasey - Welcome! There are most certainly a lot of Silkie fans on this thread. I know there are a few that specifically breed Silkies and from what I have heard from others they are stunning. They will most certainly chime in and let you know where they are and what they have.

Browncow - Welcome! First eggs are always exciting. My first egg happened to be a double yolker. I was over the moon :D As for how you keep them. I sell most of my eggs so I wash them and refrigerate as soon as I can. However they are not in my house for more than a few days before they are sold. I only wash them as I can not guarantee the receiver of the eggs would wash their hands properly after handling them, ergo my fault if they get sick.

Toodlesmom - Welcome! Glad you are researching before you get your chickens. It is scary to find how fast the time flies from planning to getting and needing to finish as they have outgrown being in the house,. Think a lot of us have been there for that. Nice to meet a neighbour too. I am at 21st and Post.

MrTattoohead - I would not worry too much about the rough spot on the beak. Unless it is something that is causing them harm or affecting what they do it should not be a problem. Although if you are intending to show the bird might have to be more vigilant with things like that. Also... Great looking coop happening :D

Mother2Hens - I am glad you found the mites. I hope that is all it is for the bald spot. You seem to be doing a wonderful job of making sure all your girls are happy and healthy. How are the little ones coming along.

Thanks to all that replied about my EE's and their egg laying timer. Two of the girls have really darkened up on their combs, I figured it was a good sign for them getting ready. Although I guess the general consensus they are late ones. I am seeing what I want to see, like I need more eggs coming right now anyway.

Welcome to the Indiana Thread! browncow ~Congrats on your first egg!
Welcome to the Indiana Thread! Kasey
Welcome to the Indiana Thread! Miller Birds
Since both of you are looking for chickens from specific areas, try clicking on the INDIANA BYC'ers Member List at the end of my post. It lists members, their counties, flocks, etc. You could send a PM (Private Message) to people in your area since everyone isn't always online-- although we have a VERY active thread! My next post has more info about it.
PipD~ Hope your foot injury isn't getting you down. You have so many wonderful chronological photos of your beautiful birds that you might consider self-publishing a photo book.
Backyard Bitten~ I just heard a story on NPR the other day about Moscato wine becoming hugely popular because of hip hop music references in songs. I suppose you were doing some hip hop dancing while drinking that wine. hahaha

CCCCHICKENS~ How is your Salmon Favorelle doing? Hope you find some answers from the vet tomorrow. (I'm one who will be taking my chickens to the vet if I need to! A pet is a pet regardless of the cost of the pet.) Good luck and let us know what happens.
She is pretty much the same. I feel really bad for her, she acts so happy even though she cant walk. I will pet her on her neck and head and she will nestle her beak down in the sawdust and bring it back up, it is pretty cute. Before this happened to her i would her sometimes but never really spent a huge amount of time holding her and stuff, because she didnt really want to be held. Now she lets me pet her and is so sweet. So now she is one of my favorites and I am going to feel really bad if they cant do anything about it. I havent called the vet, but I will be and I will let you know.

There are lots of nice dairy goats at the fair in Columbus right now. Their auction is Saturday Morning. But I saw some really really good looking goats in the front pin closest to the poultry barn, isle 2 from the livestock parking. It was all I could do not to buy one. We are not set up for goats set. I think I need a fence and a small goat house before I buy the goats. I'll see if I can find the girl's name that had them.

I found the names. The goats that I thought were great were the Swift Family goats. I also liked the Rutan goats but I'm not really wanting alpines. I like the floppy ear look instead of the alpine ears.
