Lost my black copper Marans roo over night. He had been acting lethargic but seemed better yesterday and was eating well. He was a really nice friendly guy and had shown well; going to miss him.

Now this winter they slowed down a bit and I decided to put one of the fakes back in just to give them a little "inspiration"

. I had already gathered the eggs that day. Later, my husband came in and had brought the fake egg w/him - he thought I missed one since they look so real!

I REALLY DO put a little spot on them w/a permanent marker so I can tell they're not the real thing. If you have a real one and a fake one right next to each other you could PROBABLY tell the diff....but they are very life-like!

Hi fellow Hoosiers! I've been away from BYC for a while and so just discovered this new Indiana thread. Good! I'm in southern Indiana, close to Louisville, Ky. My chickens are like me - wimps when it comes to these cold temps we're having right now. On the bright side, at least it's sunny today! Stay warm!

I also like your coop. The board under the roosting bars is something I'm thinking about.

Do you know what the problem was that caused the death? Was he older or younger?
He was only a 2 yo. His comb looked frostbitten and his wattles were pale, but color was coming back and he seemed almost back to his old self the day before he died. The others in that pen seem to be okay, though I think they're all ready for spring (me too!).

Hello fellow Hoosiers. I am not always logged in here but I wanted to provide my latest link. I am on day 20 of my second attempt at incubating. (first one went 5 of 8) One egg pipped around noon today (lower right one in the camera view). Here is a link to a video that, I hope, will run throughout the hatching. I have 6 in the 'bator and hope to have reasonable success. I heard peeping for a short time a couple of hours ago, too. The glass has some fog from the interior humidity and the outside glass reflects all lights in the room--including the netbook screen. While it could be a very boring waste of time, it might also provide a little excitement if the hatching actually occurs!

I am looking to expand my flock this spring. I'm not picky really. This is only my 2nd year of having "my girls" but am thinking barred rocks or orpingtons. I would also LOVE to get a frizzle and something with the mottled look. Does anyone have any suggestions on colored egg layers? Does, or will anyone, have chicks to sell up up near Rochester? I would be happy to purchase them from a nearby and fellow chicken lover, rather than order from a hatchery!

I wonder how many people on this thread live in Indy in a neighborhood like us. I wish we had more land, but we have just enough, at least a half acre or so. We are going to have a lush garden throughout the whole yard, and plenty of plants for the hens to forage. We want to have a worm farm too, with a functional compost pile. Flowers, fruit trees, veggie garden, vines, green green green! I bought my fiance a fire pit for Christmas, our first purchase towards our beautiful backyard. We bought this house for 12K and have completely remodeled the inside; this spring it will be the outside that will be remodeled. Life is exciting.

I live in Indianapolis around 6500 north and 2300 east. My lot is about half acre. I hope your dreams will come true with your yard! It sounds like you are well on your way. Just be aware that your chickens foraging your backyard freely will definitely have a negative impact on your attempts to grow things!

They tend to like freshly turned dirt as well as young, green plants, making it a wee bit diificult to get things to grow. This is my second year with chickens and they are going to be restricted from half of the yard so I can grow my stuff this year.

Woohoo! Congrats. Tomorrow marks 1 week my quail eggs have been in the bator. First time trying to hatch bird eggs. One more week till lock down. Can't wait to see what happens,

very cool. I think I am going to have to stop after this set unless the majority of my new hatches are cockerels1 lol
