INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

We will find you a hands-on teacher yet sally! I just ordered my turkeys, and will order the meat birds next. When i set my butcher date, i can let you know, you are welcome to come. Hoping to have a whizbang plucker built by then too.
Thanks, I just might take you up on that offer. I know that I could watch the guy coming out to kill mine this July/August but I'm sure he won't want me hanging around. And if I learn before then, I could kill Buster our scared of the wind rooster who is FAT.
Wow, thanks very much! I just read through the entire thread. I love the darker game bird meats, I had never really looked at quail before! I am adding this to our links, very nicely done tutorial.
I have three game chickens from craigs list. They are at least 21 weeks old but they care not giant by any means, they are smaller than the RIR hens I would say they weigh about half as much as my RIR. you are more than welcome to them if you want them. From the size of them I would say 1 non crowing rooster and 2 non laying hens.
Okay...once you guys make one of these, please post photos and if you're happy w/how they work. I'll let you do all the experimenting and work out the bugs then maybe we'll make one!

Would love to see photos too.

Here is a link for all of you crafty people out there that happen to buy your feed in bags.

Oh, question. My girls are 19 weeks, and I need to buy feed. Should I switch to layer, or keep with grower? They haven't started laying yet, but squatting and red faced

The feed bag I have says to change the feed gradually over the course of a couple weeks. If that is the approach you are going to take, I would start the layer feed gradually now so that when they start laying the feed will be all layer feed.
Of course changing to layer feed here did not produce eggs yet.

Sally that tote is so cute. If I had some extra time I would make some and see if anyone would buy them.
I make them, too. They make wonderful, sturdy bags!

I get a lot of requests to sell them at garden sales, festivals, library fundraisers, etc,.. I used to sell them online for $10 each, but I now just ask $5 for them. They move at that price so much faster now that everybody seems to be making them.

I consider it worth the time and thread I have invested in them. I call it my feed rebate: I get $5 back from every bag of feed I buy!!
Plus, I am a hard-core recycler and I feel great giving these bags a new purpose.
The first picture below is from HIghlander when I sent them to her in Scotland. I had a lady order a bunch at Christmas to take to her family in Belgium.

I did read that around 18 weeks you should begin to transition them.....If you will be adding to your flock ( ex. you have 18 wk olds but will be hatching chicks and integrating them) you should feed your flock grower feed and supplement oyster shells. This prevents the younger birds from eating calcium (that is integrated into layer feed) which will cause damage. This is what I plan to do.
