INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

On the flags - the bottom part was old top rail from a chain link fence that was taken down. They were just laying around waiting for a good use. They're about 20 ft long.

Then the flag was attached to an old antenna piece my dad had laying around (he's a HAM operator...lots of antenna around here). That slipped down into the top rail.

Instead of the antenna you could use pvc pipe. A skinnier one to old the flag slipped down inside a larger diameter one that is more rigid. You'd drive the rigid, larger one into the ground and put the skinnier one inside it. Of course the pvc pipe that the flat is attached to would be less rigid.

He attached the flags to the antenna (or pvc if you use it) with zip ties.

I thought you all might enjoy mine and my three year old daughter's "Snow Chicken"

Welcome ajay5 to the BYC Indiana Thread!
I am impressed that you have been researching and studying for months . . . and haven't made an impulse purchase. There have been a lot of impulse purchases of baby chicks by members this past month! haha! At least they have been experienced flock owners. Are you planning on having a large flock or a few for eggs/pets? I can't help you with chicken sources, but my motto is that if you just have a few, it is nice to have a variety. We have many members with various areas of expertise who can advise you about resources or other topics.

CluckAcres~ I am sorry to hear about your losses. I remember a recent member post saying that hawks typically don't fly away with a chicken (or duck); they just eat part, and may come back later. I apologize for being graphic, but it seems like you would have found traces of your birds.
The thing is we have lost so many chickens over the fall and late winter with no traces at all around the property. They all go in the coop everynight and get locked up. Seems like if it was some other animal we would have seen some traces of tracks or feathers around.

Bloon- love the pic!!!

crafty- yeah you just don't know what your getting anymore!!

cluck- I'm surprised you couldn't find any traces either. I used to have a copes hawk in the neighborhood. I could walk out in the yard and see dove or pigeon remains every time he struck!! Sometimes scattered, when he'd eaten from the tree and other times he eat it on the ground and leave a pile of feathers. Pretty obvious. No tracks at all? Do you have a animal cam or one of those red light things?
