INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Getting a bit huffy about people making fun of me or worse, not even raising chickens yet telling me i should have them outside & stop babying them cause they're just stupid chickens. I was told to stop naming them. I just contacted them & informed them to worry about themselves & until they're raising chickens (like the kid thing) keep their opinions to themselves. Ok needed to vent lol
Just smile at them and go on . I still have 4 month olds in the house., Well actually my garage. Around here they call me the Crazy Poultry Lady.( my friend, not ment bad, just teasing) I worry and fret over them all the time. You just do what you think is best for them. That is all any of us can do.

Sirbuster~you are right! 2 weeks is definitely too young to be outside without a broody mother hen! Some people just dont/won't understand. These are living animals... not just something that can be thrown aside, and replaced like a light bulb.

I have chickens AND kids...I should have had chickens first! Just joking!
We have more roos than we wanted to start with so we are looking to order some more chicks....where is the best place in Indiana to order from? We are just looking for good layers this year. Next year we will be looking for one or 2 for our 4-H boy to show.
Thanks in advance.
Personally if I am going to get hatchery chicks I order from Murray McMurray. http://www.mcmurrayhatchery.com/bar_baby_chicks.html
They have always been really great. You are playing a little Russian roulette any time you use USPS to ship. If you check them at the post office and there are any problems McMurray has always been stellar about replacing. They have a fantastic selection, though honestly this late in the season I don't know what you will have left to choose from. I will say I have had great luck with their sexing the chicks. Much better than the feed store chicks.

Hope that helps!

I really understand that I am going through the same thing but my chicks are 2 weeks and in the house because it is still to cold out. They just dont understand. I was told just to put they out if they live they live you can always get more. I have named all of mine. My son helped me and I just want to share what we came up with. January, Feburay, March, April, May, June, July, August, Setember, October, November, December, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. That is out chicks we have two turkeys named thanksgiving and Christmas. we had monday but she did not make it.

My garage and my laundry room "runneth over". lol Told my hubby if he didn't like me taking over the garage, then please get off the video games and finish my coop. Then I will be happy to move them out.

I fret over mine too. They are SO much easier to keep an eye on when close by and there have been a few issues (like pasty butt and wry neck that I might not have caught as early if they were outside the house. I too get called "Crazy Chicken Lady" by my friends and even my family(even though they love them too). Don't put too much time or effort into explaining yourself to anyone else. Until they raise them and love them, they just can't get it no matter how much you try to explain yourself. You will just stress yourself out trying. These little fluffy butts love and appreciate all you do and that is what matters. It's just a love thing... and you are NOT alone.

Oh, and we do "old fashioned" names like Lucy, Ethel, Amelia, Matilda, Jane, Isabella (Bella), Alice, Bertha, Betty, Eleanor, Prudence (Pru), Sophia...

I ordered from Murray McMurray last year and from Cackle and Ideal this year. My chicks from Ideal got here from Texas in 1 day and they have one of the largest selections I have seen as far as breeds. They even notify you when a breed you want that is sold out becomes available. I am super pleased with them. I will NOT order from Murray McMurray again due to a problem last year. I ordered silkies from them (very poor quality and only 2 out of 16 were female) and one was a half breed. They didn't believe me, made me email them pics once fully feathered out then they told me, "You are right. Sorry, we don't know how that happened. Someone must have jumped the fence." That coupled with the seriously poor quality silkies (red combs, single combs, tons of hard feathers and they were HUGE birds) completely let me down. My layers and other bantams I ordered from them were all fine but I won't risk it again. The customer service at Cackle is stellar and they were the strongest and healthiest birds upon arrival and the quick shipping and selection from Ideal can't be beat. They both have better availability too. Those are just my experiences though and I hope they help you a little. :)

I should add finish my "new coop". My other two coops and temporary coop/pens are all occupied. :0) The new 10x20 Coop will have 9 pens in it (doing it two story style inside seeing as silkies don't need 7ft high ceilings) and I will be able to better separate my silkies, showgirls and cochins out for breeding projects. He has been working on it slowly....... for two and a half months.

Hopefully we will have it finished by the end of the weekend. I will post pics when it is done.

Quote: We have had great customer service with Meyer hatchery. We ordered RIR female chicks which all turned out to be production RIR hens, I did not know about heritage breeds then. I have also ordered left over roosters. For the hens a hawk got a few but there were no males in the lot.
I have heard good things about Meyer hatchery too. I think they will include a rare chicken with your order for free if you ask for it.

Murray McMurray does the rare chick too. I have never used Meyer, but have heard good things about them as well. Actually planning on getting geese from Meyer next year. Ooops, no I will be getting the geese from Metzer. So many names!
