Just catching up on posts. The picture of your son, AATH, made my blood boil! Especially after the response you got from the authorities.
I have three dogs, a collie, a cattle dog, and a border collie mix, and no close neighbors, so mine are not penned. They know not to leave the property and do a good job of keeping everything else away. The collie takes personal responsibility for his chickens. This is Simon when he was still young and not filled out yet.

jchny~ I almost PM'd you about this since you have expertise, but since I am hoping to relocate it soon, I decided to post this info to see if you and any other members have advice to share.
I said I'd never do this again . . . My husband found an apparently parentless baby squirrel hanging on the basement screen door with my tiger cat watching from below. My son tried to put it in several trees, but it didn't seem able to hang on very well and it returned and climbed up my son's leg! I tried putting it in some foliage, but it ran back to me and tried to nurse on my arm. I know it's best to let nature take its course, but I could not just leave out to die. I ended up going to the pet store and spending $23 (!) on puppy baby milk formula. Luckily, in my chicken first aid kit, I had some electrolytes. The baby squirrel is in a cat carrier with a cozy blanket in a bathroom. I'm guessing from this site that it is around 5 weeks old. It's been almost ten years since a neighbor girl brought several baby squirrels over and I ended up caring for them until they could go to a certified wildlife rehab person. It was stressful feeding them so often and worrying about them. This time I hope to take it to a wildlife rescue place asap. I noticed there is one in Bloomington, and I could go there and pick up a carload of my daughter's dorm stuff since she'll be moving home for the summer in another week.
At one time, Evansville used to have only red squirrels. Then we started seeing smaller gray squirrels, and then mixes of the two. This one appears to be a mix. The gray and gray-mixes seem almost too tame while the red ones act more like my RIR!
