INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

After dark, always. Lest the neighbors be aghast. And, or course, in my particular case, impressed beyond words.

We have a pond in the woods behind our property, so I'll probably need to keep an eye out for them.

Check with your county agent. Ask if there are some minnows that they can give you or find for you cheap. Get a couple hundred and dump them in the pond. They will do a pretty good job of cleaning up the larva.

Just want to clarify -- is 1/2" hardware cloth too big for quail chicks, then? We should get 1/4" instead?
Yes. The little wretches will stick their heads through 1/2" hardware cloth. Until some hungry cat comes along, anyway.

You can get away with 1/2" if you run a short strip of cardboard around the bottom few inches of the cage until they grow a bit.

My boy loves to "water" the fenceline. He is still a toddler though. At first I did not want him going in the yard then I found it so much easier than going in and out of the house.

Farm boy. You don't lift the plow out of the ground and drive back to the house for a nature call, boy or girl. Bargersville OK. Downtown Indy, not so much.

We are about 5 miles from water the spray is working going to have to get something to hang in coop. Chickens love spray some have a lot of sores anything to put on them?

I used neosporin (sp?) ointment from the drugstore. Ask the druggist You rub it into the sore. If you use too much and make a mess, the other chickens will pick the victim to death. You may have to separate each victim. If you can, keep an eye on them and be ready to separate. Chickens will pick at anything that seems unusual to them. I once took a black marker and colored one small feather on the back of one of my white chickens. The next day, the feather was gone. Otherwise the bird was fine.

Would you be able to post a picture of them? Those bugs are really "bugging" us all, especially my dog. I am getting ready to make a spray that I saw on Facebook page called Fresh Eggs Daily today with white vinegar, orange, vanilla, and something else- cinnamon I think, but it takes 10 days to make. Plants are faster to get. Thank you for the idea.

Vanilla is instantaneous to make. Pour some in an empty Windex bottle, fill with water, shake, spray. Done! The cinnamon, orange, and vinegar might irritate your critter's eyes. Vanilla (especially watered-down) won't.

Make the cage from 1/2" or 1/2"x1" material and attach 1/4" or screen wire or cardboard temporarily to the inside bottom 4 or 6". Attach it with wire ties for easy removal.

That will make a nice cage and keep the little buggers from escaping while they are small. When they get bigger, you can remove the screen wire.

Making a cage from hardware cloth can be done easily using the zip type wire ties to attach the various pieces together. It won't work for rodents, since they will chew through them. But it works great for birds. No special tools. Won't rust. Strong enough. Change your mind and you can snip them off and reuse the wire. They are cheap.
