My poor salmon favorelle can't walk. She just falls over to he side and sticks her wing out to try and catch her or fall face first. I have to check on her all the time to give her food and water. I have been laying a piece of melon and squash by her so if she is hungry she can eat melon contains a lot of water. It dosent look like her leg is broken or anything. She look perfectly fine. I was talking to my sister who knows noting about chickens, but she suggested maybe it was a pulled or streched muscle or tendon or something like that. I am going to call some vets on monday and she if any of them will look at her and if so how much.

This could very well be something as simple as a vitamin deficiency. I would get some of that poly-vi-sol with out iron from the pediatric section in the store and try that in the mean time.

Unless it is a pet or a show bird for breeding, vets typically cost more than the chicken is worth.

Did u guys know chickens can float I was bathing a couple chickens and 1 pick up both his feet and started floating

They will float for a while, until the feathers get wet. Then they sink. Don't throw one in a pond. It will become fish food.

HELP PLEASE! Unfortunately, it's my turn for dealing with a chicken health problem. When my Barred Rock Hen was on the perch ready for bed, I looked up and saw this red, sore area. It's between her legs. The photo is a weird angle, but you can tell that the bulge is the curve between her We examined her carefully inside the house with a flashlight and saw no signs of mites or lice (although we aren't experts). We looked under her wings and around her vent. I examined the coop with a flashlight because I read that tiny black, moving mites would be visible, but I didn't see any. I spend around three hours a day with my hens because I've been working on landscaping. She has acted completely normal, so I was shocked to notice this area this evening. My other four hens seem to be fine. Luckily, I have not moved my pullets in with the hens yet. Does anyone have any thoughts? You can click on the photo for a closer view. Thank you.

Living in the country doesn't quite do the trick when it comes to fireworks! Two of my dogs are frightened by the noise and plaster themselves to my legs while I'm trying to finish up outdoors--I'm going to fall over one of them if I don't watch it. The third dog comes close just because the others are, and she doesn't want to miss out on any possible attention. And of course, the peacocks all have to scream each time something explodes. My cats hide under the furniture, and my African grey is nervous. Surprisingly, the chickens don't seem to be particularly bothered.
The corner convenience store still has plenty of fireworks, so I'm afraid that this is going to go on for a while.

That's been our experience here also. The fireworks seem to be a non-issue with our chickens.

I went a head and stuck some golf balls in a nesting box and a different hen hopped up and sat for a couple of minutes... I was figuring atleast another month at the earliest...they may meet that goal for me!!

I know store bought eggs are refrigerated obviously but I read somewhere on these forums about someone just leaving theirs out on the counter; so now I'm confused. Thanks!!

If you don't wash it, it will last for weeks at room temperature. If you refrigerate it, it will last for months. If you have room in your 'fridge, put it there. If not, stack them on the counter. Some folks use a pencil to put the date on their eggs and use oldest first. Store eggs are sometimes months (refrigerated) old.

None of it is critical. No need to refrigerate the golf balls.

Some of my hens will lay in the afternoon around 3:00 pm. My EE tends to lay later in the day. Maybe because she's at the bottom of the pecking order.

M2H, i have two white leghorns and one or both are the ones that have started laying. yesterday i went out in the morning as I usually do to feed and water--no eggs. so i waited a little bit and went out at about 3:30-- lo and behold there was an egg! not quite sure what that's about!
