INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

For an interim solution while I get a proper coop sorted out I'm thinking about buying this, wrapping it in hardware cloth, and keeping the chicks in it. They are rapidly outgrowing their tote box homes. Any thoughts?
Are you going to have fencing for a chicken yard? If so, just get the fencing, unroll it vertically, making a circle fence-high.
For shade, throw a tarp or bedsheet over it.
That way everything is re-usable.

I did the same thing, only bigger. Without the temporary T-posts, the longer run would fall over. If you made the circle 8-10 ft in diameter, it would stand by itself.

I didn't use all the fence (100 ft), but didn't cut it because I am going to reuse it when I get the permanent fence up.

This way, you can put your money into fencing you will use later rather than a tent you probably won't.

Good point, I didn't think if that. We already had our net house lying around so I just re-purposed it for my birds. I don't know if I would have gone out of my way to buy one for them.

OK. I have to update my rash statements about sale barns.

My experience with sale barns is with cattle/pig sales. I used to go to them with my grandfather 50+ years ago. He was looking for young calves/pigs that he could "feed out" and sell. A few times I saw animals going for cheap and told him. He would say "that's junk".

I don't remember the details all that well, but now I suspect that these were the ill-fed and ill-cared-for animals of which you are referencing. A farmer down on his luck and low on funds, first fed the animals poorly, then had to sell them for what he could get.

I suspect there are broker types that buy a bunch of chickens, ducks, pheasants, etc. Then quickly try to unload them before they deteriorate to the point of unsalability being unsalable.

All that to say, "Yes, I see your point". Just don't say, "There ought to be a law". We have so many laws that no one can know what is and isn't lawful. Treat the cruel with disdain. Save your outrage for those who mistreat children.

Old salt- good advice!! And keep us updated on Jimmy!! My neighbor has some and they are interesting to hear! Along with her peacocks, guinnies and other critters! Hope you can get him well!!;)

The Decatur Co fair starts 11-18! I always drag the DH thru all the animals! He has a new appreciation now though!

And I'm as proud as a peacock.......

There's 6 so far and she still has at least 10 eggs under her!! I watched her turning some earlier while trying to get the pic! It's so nest to hear her talk to them! And they are soooo much smaller than the ones I ordered or bought at TSC. Even the DH is excited!

I like John's idea for using fencing that would need for a run. Hardware cloth is pricey for a temporary fix.

Yes, please no more laws for such things. The mistreated children do need protectors but even then it is hard to say how much more we need. I have heard stories of children being removed when they were not being mistreated. Like everything too much of a good thing can go wrong. Of course there is no convincing my children that too much ice cream is not a good thing.
As for people selling wic food. how do they do it. After all who buys food from a house instead of a store. The buyers should get in as much trouble as the sellers there.

We just received the hardware cloth we ordered for my coop expansion, and it turns out they sent us the wrong kind. I ordered 1/2 inch 19 gauge wire and got 1/4 inch 23 gauge wire. This stuff is weak. No way I'm relying on it to keep my girls safe! Now I've got to wait another week or more to get the right wire!

I think this would work nicely. I used a net house/gazebo type thing for one set of chicks I had that were outgrowing their pens and they were happy to have the room.

If you secure the wire well enough, you could also use it later as a section of their run or as a mobile pen of some sort.

That's what I was thinking, that it could later be a covered run for them!

I'm picking up the tent structure for $100 off of Craigslist, and I was thinking that one 50' roll of 48" hardware cloth ($40) and a package of heavy-duty zip ties ($10) would enclose it for the moment. (Using the zipties to make it all easy to disassemble, recycle materials.)
