INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

All of you that keep mentioning the cream legbars and their blue eggs finally got to me. I won / bought some of these blue eggs for hatching on Ebay.

Ah! Jealous! Can you all stop now otherwise I might be forced to sneak into one of your coops at night and steal your chickens! Next spring is soooo far away!

Also, can someone explain the difference between a normal chicken vs a heirloom or heritage breed? I see those terms quite a bit but don't really understand what they are.

And on another note we got egg number 2 today. Same place as the last one, right outside the nesting box. You could tell that someone had been in the nesting box and made a nice little spot, but I guess she decided that wasn't going to work for her. Just about the same size as the first one. We should be home tomorrow and Sunday, so I'm really hoping to figure out who it is.

Sooo... Godiva lays 4 and 5 oz eggs 1 every other day. I'm guessing it must just be an Australorp thing, but I hve never seen eggs this big come out of a chicken.

Those look like the size of the eggs my friends chickens lay! I've always thought they looked like monsters. I'd love to tell you what breed they are, but she has no idea. Pretty sure they aren't Australorps though. Those eggs look fantastic. You should be so proud of her.

I am. Thank you. Especially since she went through the soft egg fiasco this summer. We thought her egg production was done. She takes her sweet time laying these too. About an hour in the box, and then sings the egg song as loud as she can afterward. It's a full flock production. All the hens sing along and the Roos honk. It's pretty funny. It takes her two days to produce these puppies lol!

Another question.... I really would like to have an olive egger in the flock... since my roo is an EE and I have a Welsummer pullet is there a chance I could hatch her eggs and produce an OE?

Quinstar: Yes, if your EE boy is carrying the blue egg gene. If he is carrying two copies of the blue egg gene, all of the offspring will be olive eggers. If he is carrying one copy, half of the offspring will be olive eggers and half will be brown egg layers. If he does not carry the blue egg gene, none of the offspring will be olive eggers. Since he is an Easter egger, you really don't know without hatching and growing out his daughters to see what they lay.

Oh please, John. I was just teasing you. I'm surprised that you would take it seriously. I do apologize for crossing the line with you; I didn't mean a word of it (well, maybe killing chipmunks that way isn't so nice).

Everyone on this thread loves you (including me), so if you left I would surely be hunted down.

As I've said before, I've always thought of myself as being an open minded person, but this thread has allowed me to understand and accept people's positions on a variety of topics, which has been beneficial as well as enjoyable.

Please accept my apology.

So, you're saying you are concerned about something like depicted below?

The above photo is a limp and flaccid attempt at humor.

When I read your post, I was surprised. You have always been a kind-hearted and gracious lady.
Obviously, I was mistaken in my interpretation of your words. Perhaps I should have PM'd you with a "Huh" message before flying off the handle.

P.S. Please tell me a "nice" way to kill chipmunks.

Thanks! I'm just starting to learn all of these things and it's extremely interesting. Are true Araucanas and Ameraucana guaranteed to be blue egg layers or are they like EE where you just have to wait and see? If neither of my EE girls lay colored eggs I'm going to be so disappointed. Perhaps next summer I will join the adventures in hatching and see what if I can't produce myself an EE girl. DH is going to leave me when we are overrun with chickens. Maybe I can give the excess to my neighbors.

Indiana Girl here! We've had chickens for just less than a year, 23 girls and a roosters. Love the fresh eggs! We also garden lots and live green & frugal - and have even before it was "cool" :D

Welcome to the thread!

John, just stop killing the poor little chipmunks. They have feelings too. ;)
