INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Just got my young broody brood settled in her broody-busting pen. This is not a happy broody brood.

My speckled Sussex, Poggy, apparently disapproves of unauthorized broody brooding.

Poor Margie doesn't know what she's ever done to deserve such treatment!

(Ugh, bad cell phone pictures...)

They are black and blue with silver leakage it looks like. Splash is light blue base with dark blue spots or splotches. Paint is white with black spots like a dalmation. You get splash from breeding B/B, B/S, or S/S. I'm not sure if there is another way. Paint isn't yet an acceptable breed color, as far as I know. There are breeders working on trying to make it one.

My two ducks are 20 weeks old today. Eggs will be coming soon. I just know it. No good reason other than age and they are khaki ducks.
Benji's Ancona ducks that were born around June 10 started laying about mid-October. It started out with just a couple eggs a day and now we're getting between 5 - 8 eggs each day. We're just overrun with eggs since we're also getting an average of 20 chicken eggs every day too. It's time to take more to the food pantry, since our customer base isn't built up enough to keep up with all the eggs. My spare fridge is overflowing!!

Thanks kab! I was hoping you'd chime in...figured you'd have a good idea since you have them of your own.
I know my pics weren't the best...they really need baths! They roam around in the woods and manage to get sooo dirty!
Like I said, I only was able to put in 9 of her eggs and out of the 2 I candled 1 has movement so really keeping my fingers crossed! When I got these back in gosh...Jan I think it was, they were already about 4 weeks old so other than my bantam cochins I've not hatched out any other tiny babes before! I know they are just going to be sooo stinkin' adorable!

All please send all the good hatching vibes you got!!!

Well thanks to Janet for cleaning out my brooders (literally! I think I sent her home with just under 15 chickens!) I was able to move some around. I got a temporary silkie pen together. The roo was originally in with my partridge pen until I came home to him bloody and beardless. Him and the other roo got into it and the white lost lol. So the last several weeks he has been a lonely bachelor. I didn't want to put just the single white pullet in with him as I figured he would over breed her. So my next youngest partridge pullet is in with the pair of whites now. Here are some quick pictures I snapped with cell phone.

Gosh Brad...how Do you keep them sooo clean!?! They're beautiful! Congrats on thinning out! I wish I had a rooster fairy that would come gather up mine! Maybe if I put them under my pillow!! LOL

Okay so my silkies are still laying and I don't like eating the eggs. I have fertile eggs everyday from them. They are really too small to eat and make really cute babies. Anyone interested?
Recycle them. Fry up an omlette, shells and all. Then throw it over the chicken fence for chickens to eat.

John

I got the nerve today to do a tad more candling .. only did 3 of the 40 ... but I was thrilled to see 2 little ones moving about in there! Only 1 of the 2 I candled from my now missing Silkie and 1 of the NN eggs! Here's hoping to happy healthy peeps the 21st!! I'll for sure post pics and provide updates!! Suspense the last week is killer!!

OK, I give up! I looked for NN on the BYC abbreviations page. No luck. I tried deducing, no luck.

Nearly Nuggets. Nasty Nancy. Neighborhood Nuisance. Normally Nearby. Nationally Notorious.

Whuts NN?

We go a week from Monday to talk with Dads heart surgeon and have his evaluation.
Have fingers crossed there are no blockages, and can have the less evasive surgery.
Everything I will plan and do the next few months revolves around Dad right now.
I have several Gold Laced Wyandotte hens if anyone is looking, will sell for cheap, they are all march hatches and younger.
I will be hatching them again net year, but have entirely too many hens.
PM me if you are interested.
You can actually have too many hens??? Weird!

bradselig posted: Ok, so a (short) chicken train is in place for Friday 11/15 in the afternoon (time still to be determined). I'll be going from Warren (Huntington county) to meet up with Jchny2000 in the Anderson area. If you need chickens delivered to the area or brought back up north, get with me to arrange it.

Indiana BYCers: I will be in Indy around the 19th - 21st-- not exactly sure, but I can transport poultry from Janet/jchny to areas between Indy and Eville. Bloomington, Columbus, Greencastle, Terre Haute -- there are many routes I can take home, so I can work it out if someone would like a chicken delivery.
I took pictures of The Brown Girls today. Unfortunately, the fall leaves in the background are a little too "busy." I haven't been able to take a good photo of Adeline that really captures her magnificence.

Here's Bonbon, English Chocolate Orpington Bantam:

I ran across this picture of Adeline when I first got her. Haha

If you ever get a Bon Bon baby..or six I love her!!!!
Happy Friday to all of you. I'm new to this group, so hello. I live in Brown County. I have 7 hens, one of which is broody and trying to hatch chicks as we speak. They were due yesterday, but I didn't see any signs of life yesterday evening. And I have 5 more in the bator now, due tomorrow.

Is there an outlet any of you know of for roosters? I have 2 bantam roosters that were hatched earlier this summer (June), and I'm sure I'll have a few roo's from this batch. I am not opposed to sharing them for freezer use down the road, I just don't care to do it myself. I had an a-hole in Indpls on Wed suggest that since I live in the woods, just let them go live (or die) by way of nature. Sorry, can't do that. Here are a couple of pictures of them if anyone wants them for their beauty and future breeding. They are nice, I just don't want any roosters around. Thanks for any thoughts.

Welcome to the crazy farm!!! Beautiful roo's I can't have them where I live but would if I could.
I am a "wanna be" backyard chicken farmer in West Lafayette. I have been reading and dreaming. I saw this book recommended and I bought it. It is my life! I am in the drawing stages of a coop for spring. I am thoroughly enjoying it and wish I were reading it slower. The illustrations really add to the book. I am reading it on a kindle fire. However, today I have my simple e-reader and the book still looks great.

Anybody here live in the Lafayette area? I was driving to church two weeks ago and there was a chicken sitting in the middle of the road (Pawnee by Indian Trail in WL). We turned around to go "help" but she had got up and crossed the road.

Susan
