INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Wow what a storm. Just as I wss leaving work when it hit. I was in my car and when I saw truck topper flying off and shed displays plowing into cars I knew it was time to go back inside the store.

Came home to no power, some siding blown off, and a dog house blown several hundred feet into the field. Thankfully no chickens in that one yet. Overall very fortunate! Hope everyone else makes it out ok as well.
We were up that way in the middle of it all. Really bad! Glad your hose and birds were safe.
I did wave hi when I saw the sign for warren!

Word is there was a tornado near Lebanon. Hoping Old Salt and anyone near there is ok.
Oh my! Hope he is safe!

Wow what a storm. Just as I wss leaving work [Lowes] when it hit. I was in my car and when I saw truck topper flying off and shed displays plowing into cars I knew it was time to go back inside the store.

SallyinIndiana posted: Do you think Lowes will clearance off those sheds? I can think of quite a few good uses for a shed. It might be worth the drive, if there was one that would make a nice goat stall with some space to store goat food and stuff. I've been thinking of goats for so long but I need things like a shed and fence to come in place first.

SallyinIndiana ~ What an opportunist! The storm hadn't cleared, but Sally hoped that Brad would be discounting those sheds that plowed into cars! Haha That cracked me up. You're a quick thinker, though, since the early bird catches the worm!

Note to bradselig ~ Glad you were smart and went back inside!
CRSelvey ~ I put a weatherproofing type of clear plastic over certain sections of my coop, mostly covering the bottom 2/3 of the coop, leaving the top areas open for ventilation. This year, I just used small nails and hammered them half way so I can easily remove them in the spring. I used enough nails to tack the plastic down enough so it doesn't rattle, but it's not tightly sealed so it gets a little ventilation. Last year, I tried using some duct tape, but it didn't hold and the hens complained about how it looked. Since your coop looks so exquisite, you might not want to add nail marks. You could also attach the plastic on the inside of the coop, so it's not so noticeable. Last year we started to use a tarp that we had cut up to fit certain areas. Then we realized that the tarp made the coop too dark, even with the clear roof. Trial and error. Lots of trial and error when it comes to chickens!

I see, easy fix then. My cellar was built at the same time.
I was thinking of a car battery and power inverter to change it to ac current. Thankfully I dont have expensive eggs in there!

Sally- most of the displays are owned by the manufacturer but I will definitely be asking about them!

Cccccchickens- thermometers are reading about 78F. I placed about half a dozen hand warmers around the eggs and below them. Just hoping that will keep them warm
Crossing my fingers for you

Hope everyone made it through the storms without damage.
Had a fantastic day even with the horrible weather!

We went to Markle today and finally own cows! DH managed to pull of a swap/trade deal! Picked up 3 calves, 1 Holstein and 2 mixed breed. I see lot of jersey in the mixed ones. All bulls. Will not leave them intact, getting a bander this week. Will need one for kidding this spring anyway, to wether any boys.
The 2 "mutts" are about 1 1/2 weeks old, the Holstein is lucky to be 3 days. Drove right through that storm to get back, and put the babies on fresh hay. Our Livestock trailer is partially enclosed so they will stay in there a few days away from drafts. Got a warm bottle into all 3. We have named them already! Tbone, Ribeye and Sirloin

Aww they are cute. Are you planning on using them for meat or just keeping them for pets?

Oh forgot to mention, I do have a heat lamp on them too, and plenty of room for them to move away if they are too warm.
I have been out there twice already peeking on them, all 3 are under the lamp, sound asleep.

They will feed us very well! My only pets are my oscars, and DHs pug Sadie. Everything else here has a purpose, either watchdogs, or food.
X2 brad! The handwarmers is what i think saved my quail. Good luck.

O i see. I have oscars too! well an oscar my female died. I had one male before that. And a gigantic malw before that

M2H: thanks for asking. Yes i make hair bows and hair clips for little girls as well as selling homemade, preservative-free dog treats. I will have to keep my eyes open for those LED lights! Yes i have been lurking around, but only to catch up as i was majorly behind in posts

JCHNY: you have some nice looking cows!!! I wish we able to afford some land so that we could have some cows as well.

I was on the way to a church class this evening and on the way there, i encountered a large uprooted tree that was laying across the road near McCordsville. I hope everyone else is doing ok and didn't have anything major happen. Hope everyone has a good Monday!!!!
