INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Quick question for anyone on. I have a chicken in the house 2 weeks now, she's better and I want to put her back out in the coop, do I need to worry about the temp difference? Only in the 20's tonight and drops for the next week. Or should I just keep her in til warmer temps?

lol I don't think raw meat is bad for them, they catch mice, bugs and I have even seen them kill and eat small birds.
I didn't see anyone fighting with her, haven't seen anyone fight her even when she was new, she started a few fights but they were over very fast and that was the end of that.
I don't have an over abundance of mice, they eat them, and I have not seen any rats around I also have a dog " mouser " does real good at keeping them under control here.
I did have some coons take a couple of my hens and tore the heck out of my coop, busted perches and nesting boxes, but that was about 6 days ago, the girls are just now getting back to laying good for me again.
I wonder if she got hurt during that and I just didn't see anything, I do have 25 now. I try to look them over pretty well every day at the morning feed time.

don't know how or what to use or what to use in the way of food?
I'll bet thats what happened. She looks like she scraped that side of her face on something. Here is a link for tube feeding. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/805728/go-team-tube-feeding

What breed? If it's a cold hardy breed that you feel would stay warm using the flock you can try, but I would probably try to wait out until next week.

get a 55 gal. barrel put a little bit of feed in the bottom and stick or something so they can climb up it and put it outside the coop but close to the wall. take all feed and water out of coop. the rats jump in to get the feed but cant jump out. in the morning you go out and kill them. Thats how my grandmother always got rid of them.
I will have to try this. I haven't seen a mouse in awhile, in the barn anyways. I have never seen a rat, but who's to say they aren't around and I just don't know it.
I have a 40lb bag of that, we had a calf that didnt make it, got almost a full bag. going to go give her some now. thanks
I am glad you have some one hand, but sad to hear about the calf. Good luck with your chicken

don't know whats up with this??? but I thought it was cute. I think someone farted...

sorry so many pic's but I love showing my kids off....
Wow looks like a bantam egg!
Love all your babies! Are those pyr's, I love the dogs!
Ok so I got a bit of a probablem. I have a batch of 9 Maran eggs from Brad incubating. They are do to hatch on the 28'th. so far Candling has went great I see good growth in all the eggs. My only problem is I just received a new set of 14 half and half BPR & RIR eggs from Fred's hens. I was wanting to set them tonight "I got them Thursday" I use a automatic turner and I know the Marans need to be taken out of the turner to rest on day 18. And the humidity needs to increase to 60-70 percent. I only have one bator. So should I wait another week before setting the 14 new eggs? Or should I take enough trays out of the turner to make room for the Marans to rest on the floor? And would the high humidity hurt the new eggs in the first week? This is my first hatching and I do realize I didn't plan it to well!! Any advice would be appreciated very much! Yes I know Nubie mistake!! HELP

I agree with Racinchickins, I would take out the rails needed, and stop the turner for the due date.. Early into the incubation, Humidity isn't as big an issue.
Sending good hatching vibes!

I don't know how much land you have, but we bought a new john deere 790 in 2007. Its classified as a "compact tractor". It has a side discharge mower, and live PTO. We have about 3 acres of field we mow with our bush hog attachment too, feed that to the goats, cow and pigs. We have several attachments, including a front end loader. I have had no issues with it, none..(knock on wood, hehe) Its been priceless. It was a big investment but there is few projects we need heavy equipment for now. We still plan for the backhoe, feed grinder and tiller attachments. No more worries over moving heavy objects, plowing snow and we even fill the kiddie pools out in the yard for the waterfowl with the bucket on the front, LOL. I hate dragging garden hoses everywhere!
How do you gather and store it... do you have some kind of rake and baler?
I use one of the lawn leaf catcher things that you pull behind a garden tractor. I dump piles at each coop, then on to the pigs pen, and toss a bunch in the hay cage for the goats and cow. I never have to store it long LOL! (I wish we had more acreage to plant sorghum and alfalfa.) If I do store any, it goes into the loft of the livestock trailer, or more in the pigs pen. The pigs just devour it, and its very healthy for them too. And its great for deep litter in the coop also!
I also gather pine needles as often as possible, the catcher picks them right up.

I feel like I've complete the first half of the Oregon Trail... I'm officially home, from traveling to @bradselig 's, with a slew of birds. Somehow I ended up with 5 extra birds... How did that happen??? Then I stopped at the Muncie RK.... They just happened to have SLW, so I was suckered into their 6 chick minimum. Their "chick tanks" looked really good, nice and clean and full.
So on to the good stuff, chick pics!!!

The SLW were in with black australorps, so did I pick the right baby chicks?

Side note: Why do my photos look so downgraded when I load them on here? I feel like it makes them look really blurry...
ETA, they're not as blurry when I click on them, so nevermind!
lilmizscareall~ They are all so cute, but why do you have mystery ones? Did they hand you brown paper bags with question marks on them?! lol
Am I understanding right that the flock is attacking this bird and caused the eye and face injury?

If so, you need to figure out why that is happening. I know it "could" be boredom, but why that bird in particular? "Sometimes" there is another underlying issue of illness with the bird and the others are drawn to destroy it. Sounds crazy, but in "natural" setting, taking out an ill bird would be good for the flock as it would draw predators to the rest.

Did you possibly notice her acting "off" or ill in any way before this happened?

The disclaimer is - there may not be any other issue with her. There may just be some cannibalistic birds in the flock and she's an easy target. If you have time you might want to observe the flock dynamics to see how they are acting around each other and interacting.

It may also help to give the flock some raw meat. Some ground meat is easy as you can throw small pieces all around so they can all get some. The propensity to attack another bird can "sometimes" just be the need to some animal/insect protein in their diet. Ground meat is usually less expensive than the dry mealworms by the lb. Some butchers will also sell liver or other meats for pet food that you can cut up tiny and feed. It's usually cheaper yet... our butcher does pet liver for .50/lb.

Hope she heals quickly for you!
I am wondering about this: Humans are not supposed to eat raw ground meat because it can contain E. coli, so it seems that the risk same would apply to chickens. Other raw meat would probably not pose a risk, but ground meat could be contaminated.

chick rookie: The remedy guide I posted with the eye wash info also has directions for using aspirin for pain.

So I just called our Big R to see what chickens they are getting. I got my blue cochins there last spring and wanted a few more. The guy ssaid they are already spoken for! I didn't think they were allowed to do that. Boo. They are getting some other breeds I want so I'll still look. I need a few more girls for my 3 big boys.
Ugh! I didn't think so either.

I just set 7 BR and 7 RIR, I also candled the 9 Marans and everyone of them is getting more filled and the air sacks look great, there is still a little light area on the bottom but this makes movement easy to see. and let me tell ya they are moving around. All but one egg, had to throw it out it has not changed sense the last candling, this is day 15 for them so I figured it was a dud and to get it out before it blew up. My plan of action is to remove all but two trays from the auto turner and lay the marans in the floor while the 14 other eggs stay on the turner. I will bump up the humidity on lock down day and hope for the best that it does not effect the 14 eggs newer eggs to much. fingers crossed. next year I will have a second bator for this reason. I hope both sets turn out good.
For the hatcher, just get a still air. Holds humidity so much better!

WOW we were so close! I go to Muncie RK a lot, they do maintain their chicks very well.
#1 the almost white bantam looks like my Red Pyle OEGB chicks. If so, they are very sweet birds.
