INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

For you experienced incubators :

How long do you normally leave eggs in the incubator after day 21??

Today is day 22 for me, the last egg that pipped yesterday hatched this morning.  I didn't see any more external pips this morning but will obviously check again tonight after work.

Just curious how long you normally hold out hope before unplugging the incubator?

I am new to incubating also. But I have learned patients!!! My first try I had 8 eggs. On day 20 1 hatched no issues. And 1 was peeped. On day 21 the second chick finally came out. Then nothing happened with the last 6 eggs. On day 22 still nothing. I was told to wait 5 days after "day21" or you get a smell before you toss the eggs. The chicks can last 36/48 hours running around the bator. I wish I would have listened. On day 23 I also got worried about my first ever chicks and opened the bator to pull them out. I then waited till day 24 and figured nothing else made it, so I pulled the eggs and took a look. I had 5 fully developed chicks ready to hatch but had died ( I assume from opening to early) they must have "shrink wrapped". 1 egg when I cracked it open I heard chirping and seen a chicks beak pushed into the air sack!!! This made me about as made at myself as you can be. It did not make it. So to make a long story short if I would have waited I may have had a more hatch! So from now on I'm waiting 48hrs after the hatch to pull chicks then I'm waiting till 5 days after hatch date to pull out duds. Hope this helps!

Thanks it does! I may have already screwed it up since I opened the incubator this morning for about one minute to snatch out the ones already dried off.

if the only eggs not hatched have no visible pips, I will remove all chicks once dry and check the remaining eggs. At that point those eggs if still alive become eggs needing assistance as the chicks get shrink wrapped pretty easily when I am removing the hatched chicks. I have tried several different ways to prevent the shrink wrapping but it almost always happens if I open the incubator.

Wish I was there to help! I would keep checking to be sure. I know you are a late nighter like me, so feel their feet, ears etc.
Put a heat lamp up and secure it well if you have to, this is the last bad spell according to all the forecasts. Just watch that lamp close.

Margie will be your incubator for sure, and she is just a beautiful girl..
thanks for offering, it would be great if you were... always nice to have someone that KNOWS what they are doing around. Your right I am a late niter..lol. been even later then normal since Tuesday. Very tired with running out to check on # 2 son and trying to get #1 to eat all hours of the day and night

..... but we do what we do. DH says he is going to take a turn tonight cause I am WAY TO GRUMPY, kinda happens when your tired... lol
anyway you';ll be happy to know that #2 made it just fine had a few times that I was sitting with him in the barn warming him up cause he was shaking, then I put socks on him at about 4 am and kid socks on his ears..... it worked!!!!! he stopped shaking and was still able to get up and nurse. went out about 11 am and took socks off and he is great.

Oh my, The poor pullet, I am so sorry

My white silkie hen is just as aggressive, I put her in with LF LO hens, and she settled down, then dominated them also

She thought she was as big and needed to be dominated. She did undermine the orp hens, but the GLWs with them set her up to realize its not happening. She is now back in the silkies pen and much better mannered. I do not plan to breed her at this point. DD will need to decide what she wants to do with her, mean birds cannot stay.

Anything above 50% is awesome for shipped eggs. Congrats!!!

Try putting her with LF hens, she sounds like she needs to learn pecking order.

#1 will be ok with you bottle feeding him.

Its so hard to see a weak one, just be positive, lots of vitamins/electrolites and keep him warm.
#1 ate a whole 4 oz this morning at 9 am...

This is one of my SF chicks, I'm thinking it may be a roo? Anyone with more experience want to chime in? The others are mostly white right now on wing feathers and are a lot farther along.
going to have some SF's of my own some day!!!!! I just love them.

Now I have to find them some hens.

Yesterday we gathered 7 eggs! I was SO happy that everyone got extra treats! Apparently, my girls LOVED the extras and didn't want them to stop coming because they layed 11 EGGS today!! and one is blue! I believe it came from my tailless EE! I'm gathering all of the scraps and extra veggies I can find for them as I type!
