INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Had a bit of a bummer today. Went down to check on the chicks this morning, and found out I had lost my only Blue Barnevelder. No real warning, just was laying dead under the brooder. All the other chicks are doing great, growing like crazy and very energetic. I guess I should be thankful I've only lost one out of the 40 odd chicks i'm brooding.

Oh well, in this hobby, you will definitely lose some from time to time. You just have to do your best to keep them healthy.

One question though - it had yellow poo all over its butt. not like any pasty butt I've seen in the past. And none of the others seem to have it. Is the yellow a warning sign I should be watching for?

Just did a google on yellow poop and this came up. It says lower down on the page yellow foamy poop is a sign of severe infection

Looks just a little bit goofy! Lol. I'll bet he/she grows out of it and turns out beautiful!
Yeah - he's still in that slightly awkward growing stage - but I think his coloring is awesome!
Yes his coloring is beautiful! So bright and shiny! He may have that teen age awkward look but he will b an amazing bird when he's older.

I'm going t put in my 2 cents here. 250w bulb that close to the bitties could b burning them. Even being infrared it's putting off quite a bit of heat. You may try pulling the light back another foot. Just to see if that helps.

I did before I left the coop last night. I'll see how it is when I head out there today. I didn't have any problem with my other chicks, having the light that close.

Pile of chicks :
400

I was just looking over threads about AI on chickens and now I have the urge to test it out just because I can. Yeah, I've got that kinda mind set about new things. Lol. I think if I ever start 'breeding' birds my dad may have to put up with it because it seems to be the easiest way to insure you know who is paired with who right?

Anyway. Hi to all the newbies! :welcome

And I'm sorry to those who lost chicks and eggs. :( I'm worried a bit about the 30 some eggs I've got in the 'bator since there was a slight flux in room temp that completely {maybe an exaggeration} threw off the temperature of the incubator but now its fine so hopefully it only slightly upsetted the eggs and no real bad damage was done. I think the lowest it got to was around 80 and then it got to about 102. So does anyone know if that will cause losses? It didn't stay at around 80 for more than a half hour or less so I figure that that would be like a broody leaving the nest for just a bit right? And It was Only above 100 for a few minutes. I hope nothing goes wrong, I'm crossing my fingers.

Thank you. She died. It's so weird and confusing. She wasn't developing at the same rate as Scrappy. She layed under the eco glow all the time. Maybe just failure to thrive. I hope it wasn't something worse. No one else has issues. If anyone has a spare duckling let me know. Scrappy is pretty upset. they were pretty attached to one anoth
Now that my quote is working I can do this and all know who I'm talking to and what about...I'm sorry about your little ducky, thats realy sad, and poor Scrappy...

The silkies are outside!!!! Finally!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Checking out their temporary digs

your Silkies are beautiful, nice temp digs. My Silkies wont come out of the new house????? the Browns that I put out with them are outside as much as they can, the Silkies just sit inside and watch... they came out the first day about 5 min. I don't think they like the their temporary digs. Dont know what to do to make them feel safe enough to come out???

No chicks yet. I had hoped this wouldn't happen. Crossing my fingers they are just behind. A lot of people on other threads have been posting about chicks and adults lost in transit

I was going through hatching withdrawal when we had that break in the weather in November, so I nabbed a couple of eggs and threw them in the incubator. One was an egg from a mille fleur d'uccle hen fertilized by a blue splash silkie roo. Here are the results:
Awesome!!! I love it

Hi to all!
My husband and I are brand new to chickens. We have talked about it for quite some time and just took the 'plunge' yesterday so this is all very new to us. I wanted to bring home every baby chick in the store...but my husband said 'no' and I thought better of it and decided on 4 each of 6 different varieties! (Told you we took a plunge) We live in rural parke county in Indiana and look forward to linking up with like minded ppl and eager to learn all there is to know! So excited! Any helpful advice is much welcomed!
Safe heat water and food and a clean place to live, oh yea and LOVE LOVE LOVE. Good luck and Welcome

Its a Lorex wireless security system. We got it at best Buy. This is the one http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/con...Kya4vnOnb0CFe87MgodJHUAdA&is=REG&Q=&A=details

We got it to keep an eye on the barn and property initially, but now it works really well inside the buildings to watch the animals. The alpacas are dure to have their cria's in June, so it's peace of mind being able to watch them from bed.
This is how we placed the other camera. We want to buy two more for the outside. They don't reach super far, and don't do well through metal or wires. They have an antenna you can buy for about 60 bucks to enhance the signal.

Our large fowl flock is in there too, they sleep behind that fence panel in the back.

cool I am going to look into this when DH gets back to work..

I'm just on pg 2410, but I ned to go outside in between the rain drops, will finish catching up tonight I hope... lol

If it is the only one with yellow poo and there are no other bloody stools, I would vote against a fast spreading infection.
I have lost a couple to the yolk not getting absorbed correctly but that was within hours of their hatching.
In humans, low levels of iron and other minerals can cause light colored stools. maybe some of the chick powder from Meyer hatchery would help. They seem to have the best price on it for a larger amount. TSC and RK have the tiny packages that look like yeast packages.

Just saw the Indiana BYC site! I can FINALLY share some pictures with other chicken people! Already shared my son's 5 SLW on there!

2 more days until the Final duck decision is made!

I got the materials list together for my pallet coop! It will end up being a 8'x12' coop with 80' side walls. the roof is going to be a cross between a saltbox style. I hope to start building this week yet! I warn all of you this will be updated with pic HEAVY post

! The siding will be 1x's taken apart from the pallets as a lap siding style. I will probably do a heavy weather proofing stain and not paint (I want a rustic looking coop). There will be a entrance from the coop into the goats pasture that can be shut off, And a large run (not sure how big yet) off of the coop itself. This will be a fun project and I will try my best to give the "pallet coop" respect when its all done!
