INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Thanks, it's going to be a pretty solid building when it's done. Here is another pic of the sidewalls and where the people door will be.

I'm just glad to be able to work outside a little even though 29/30 degrees wasn't the best lol

It definitely looks like you know what your doing! Great job!

Thanks CCCCCCCChickens with Indiana's weather I figured I best get as much done as I can every day. I had about a 3 hour gap because of my sons school programs. But it shouldn't be to much longer and it will be complete!!!

Well, I lost one of the new cochin bantams overnite, bless it's little heart. Not sure why, they had pasty butt BAD when I got them but I don't know if that had a part in it or not. Poor thing. The other one is bright eyed and bushytailed. I called the store and they said they'd replace it so I ended up with one plus I bought one more (I didn't want the one to be lonely on the way home...) Now I'm wondering what color these will be. CCCCCCCCCHICKENS mentioned black and blue for the two yesterday and I'm going to guess it was the blue that passed since it was the lighter one. Does it look like 3 blacks now? Could the lightest one be mottled maybe? All three have a couple little white feathers on their wings but my black jersey giant chicks started out like that... Also, while I'm rambling on, when will I be able to tell who's who and what should I look for? Should I just watch their combs? Okay, here they are:

Sorry about your loss. The last one looks like it may be mottled. You should be able to tell gender around 6-8 weeks. If one makes itself obvious early on, maybe even 4 weeks.

Good point. I should of went outside today and worked, but I didn't feel like it lol, funny how that works. Nice day I don't want to go outside, crappy day I want to go outside. I had planned on working outside Saturday, but it is suppose to snow again! Maybe Sunday

It is the escaping thing I worry about. Both my dogs getting in accidentally (one of my more trusted did get in once but ran past the chickens to come find me...gave me a heart attack though) and the chickens getting out. I had a chicken get killed by my dogs early on in the chicken owning business, but she was smaller and I assumed she either got through the farm fence squares into the dog yard, or flew in. Harriet was a big Rock and I don't think she could have done either. I'm at a loss for how she got in. I'm guessing she squeezed under the gate (which is how I think she was getting out of the chicken yard on the other side). I have so much fencing I don't see how I can modify it. I have thought about just containing the chickens in their run, but I guess I feel I would rather they live shorter/happier lives instead of longer/bored lives. I currently only free range them in the evenings and am usually working around the property somewhere while I do. I don't leave them out there alone all day.
I'm hoping mine aren't escape artists. The lady who sold the house to us had three hens that just sat in the back yard free ranging all day and they didn't seem to want to leave the fence, so my fingers are crossed.

I guess you could put hardware cloth around the dog run, or something a little bigger gauge and less expensive.

OK -- everyone's positive recommendations have convinced me to try the light brahmas & probably some bantams. Then again, did I expect anything different coming from this group of addicts? I just can't imagine anyone posting a comment saying, "You really don't want to get that breed of chicken" or "You have enough different breeds already"!!

Well, at least with a pond you don't have to worry about pond math -- no one can really justify having more than one pond!
Right on both accounts.

We live on a hill, so we have a creek. No ponds for us.

*boo hoo*
