INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

ellymayRans ~ So sorry to hear!

That's terrible to not know what happened!
Btw, I am still wanting a frizzle or a sizzle or any kind of izzle (I'm sounding like Snoop Dog

), so if you have one available sometime, please let me know.
Since I just went down a hen

and Chewie was already over breeding (down to 4 hens with 2 pullets about 2 months away from laying) them I am considering placing a small order for chicks. I am thinking about ordering from Meyer if anyone wants to go in on an order. I'm open to another hatchery also but everyone else seems to be sold out. I want another rock and a couple more blue egg layers and will probably order a couple cochins as well. I was REALLY looking forward to getting the chicks out of my house but I'm hoping in another week I might be able to brood them in the garage.

ChickCrazed ~ Do they have bantam frizzles or sizzles?

Don't worry! The sand was for my human girls! Lol! I do appreciate the link to info though, I'm always eager to read up about chickens, never hurts to learn something new!

DuckiesGarden ~ When you said "play sand for my kids" I thought you meant your chicken kids!

Btw, I like your plate with marching ants that you used for your egg display.
Actually, that fine sand isn't too safe for human chickies either. They can inhale it and have respiratory issues just like chickens can. We were told, back when my now 33-year-old was in preschool, to stick with the heavier builder's sand for children's sandboxes.
toodlesmom ~ Hey, nice to hear from you again!
I bet Play Sand could be a problem for some, but I bet construction sand isn't sterilized. However, since kids play in the dirt, they don't necessarily need sterile sand-- unless they plan on inhaling it! If it's not one thing, it's another! haha

Hi!
Totally new to this site and to owning birds! Still learning how to navigate!
Just moved to northwest Indiana, have some land so decided to get some birds.
I purchased some guinea fowl last summer from a lovely local lady to start with, out of ten I have seven left, I think two I lost to hawks and one from unknown reasons, just found him in the coop one day, still.
Well I figured it was time to move up to chickens, I tried contacting the same lady since she was great, but sadly no response, I was getting a little antsy so I ordered them offline from a hatchery. Which i assumed two days and I have em, nope they won't be here till may. So the wait is on....

I'm so happy to have found this site with so many people have ideas and knowledge.
shellybelly ~ Welcome to the Indiana Thread! Please look on page 2428, post 24276 to learn more info about our great thread!

We have a bantam Orpington hen who came to us as a packing peanut.
She lays a small egg, but it's still larger than the first dozen my pullet RIR has laid.
She give about 5-6 eggs a week, reliably, but was the first to stop laying in the fall.
She has Napoleon syndrome (sassy & pretends she's big) because she's the only bantam in our flock of 8 LF.
Good layer, healthy and determined bird.
I recommend them!
pginsber ~ That sounds familiar! My English Chocolate Orpington bantam, Bonbon, lays eggs almost as big as my crazy LF RIR Nene's. The yolks of Bonbon's eggs are the same size as Nene's. Bonbon is the only bantam in my flock of 5 LF hens. She also acts like she's just as big as the others. We get a big kick out of her. If anyone is interested, I got her (and my Jubilee) from chickenscratchpoultry.com, just an hour or so away from me in Illinois.

That would be me, unless some of the BR chicks surprise me! So far it looks like all 8 BR are pullets.

Mine are very cautious around anything and everything, even people except immediate family.
They have most of the day free range, so they all are very wary of any thing not the "norm".
My geese and the guinea etc are even more wary! If anyone or thing shows up unannounced I know really fast.
All I hear is guinea screeching, goose honking and screaming LOL it gets extremely loud!
That's the way I want it too.
ok well maybe we can trade one of your for mine....?? I need another hen not a rooster. mine were 4 weeks old last Monday. will post if Rooster and maybe go from there?

Had a super busy day. Had the pleasure of meeting yankeedoodling today

Special thanks to her for meeting in town, I was able to get supplies before we met up.
Peeked in at TSC's chicks in Anderson while I was there.
Saw they had some misc"Red" pullet chicks, BA, JG and (CX) Cornish Cross.
Also had several pekin ducks about a week old, and ouch! they aren't cheap!
love.gif
My first pekin have hatched this season, I have 3 adorable little ones peeping at me.
I will have ducklings available, fantastic fertility rates on the eggs! First round was 3 of 3 hatched.
Hatching eggs are available to anyone interested also.
If anyone is looking for pekin please PM me. I will be more reasonable than farm store or hatchery prices.
They are a good forager, but are messy and I don't recommend them added to a chicken flock.
Drakes will attempt to mate with chickens and can harm them! (Hens) ducks will be fine but keep water at neck level to prevent "dunking".
If you interact with them daily as ducklings they will be very social.
I do not socialize my flock birds as much since I free range, but all my babies get random daily attention from 6 adults LOL!
First geese are due next week and the very first turkey poult of the season

Expecting a very good year from my Bourbon Reds. Hen's very first egg is fertile and growing nicely.
Exciting hatches!!

Morning pond update: 2 pair of redhead diving ducks & 1 pair of mallards swimming around. Wonder how long the redheads will be in the area? The grebe we had 2 years ago stayed at least a week. I read they (redheads) go to the northern plains/parts of southwestern Canada to breed.

Got a problem hoping the goat people here can help me with, my doe is past due, today is day 150, and she has scours, can I give her drench? Or something else, I wormed Monday cause 1 doe had them and the vet had me do everyone. And we have them on a new feed that is supposed to be better for pregnant and nursing does. I know the change could have caused it but only the 1 doe is having the problem, and it just had to be the overdue one.
She is not acting real peppy either, she just stands with her but against the wall. Then she poo's on the wall and I have to move her and clean her up and she goes right back to the wall. She looks real bad in the hip area if she wasn't having this problem I would say she is going into labor, but with this maybe not. I'm a newbie as far as birthing, so I'm asking allot of questions, sorry, I may just be jumping the gun and being peariond .

I don't know anything about goats, but good luck with her -- hope all turns out well!

Oboy, I wish you luck!
I was lucky with our little pug mix, Sadie, she just licks them. She is around newly hatched quail, and won't harm them.
We have had her about 5 years so birds were a new thing for her. I just had to say NO! and that was that.
I couldn't part with a dog that I had raised, tough situation. I had problems retraining one, but the dog wasn't "ours" originally.
We took him home from our campground on the decision that we would foster until we found a home for him, and that was the deciding factor.
I have trained police dogs for protection and search, so this guy was just not retrainable, and am guessing why he turned up "lost"
I took in a stray boxer after I had got my chickens, and saw very quickly he was NOT safe around them, or the ducks/geese.
He was chewing the chain link dog fence to get at them, barking furiously and growling! Tried everything. Wasn't safe to let him near any bird.
I worked with him several months, and the prey drive was just too intense. He was an adult dog, so hard to say how old.

After almost a year, we found a young family with active children that made a good fit for him (Max) and rehomed him.
The other issue was my DD's cat, and our little pug, he was just too rough in his play and would scare both of them.
And he was big enough, he would knock Dad over, that was not safe! Much harder retraining an adult dog.

This morning we had a mouse in the kitchen and my terrier won't even look at it. Neither dog will. This gives me hope they won't get excited over the chicks.

I have a friend who does search and rescue. That's a lot of training. I enjoyed being "Lost" for the dog to find me.

So depressed....last year I planted 30 trees, 20 screen poplars (since I live off of Michigan Rd) and 10 fruit trees.  I haven't checked the fruit trees yet but the poplars all seem to be dead.  Not only was all that expense and manual hole digging and watering for nothing....but i lost a year of growth and it will be even longer before anything grows up tall enough to block the road and help block some wind.  Boo.  I can't decide if I should re-plant or not.  If I do I am considering going with the green giant arborvitaes.  I really don't want to add digging and planting 30 trees to my already long Spring list!!!

Bummer about the trees! We bought 100 saplings from DNR in 2003 and about 20 are still alive. It IS a lot of work I agree.
We have about 5 3yr old saplings we've been growing--tulip, cedar, oak, etc... If you decide you want to re-plant some trees, you're welcome to have them. We live NW Indy.
