Happy belated birthday to my oldest hen, Cubby, who turned 9 years old on Saturday! I totally forgot about it because of all the stuff I have going on, but I'm sure she doesn't mind. This girl arrived here as a day old chick. I can't believe she's still as active as she is--and that it's been 9 years since I got my first chickens!!

So I was thinking about the BYC article contest (which is here, for anyone that hasn't heard of it: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/864291/byc-article-writing-contest-5-2014-write-win ) and was wondering what y'all thought of an article idea I had. I'm not sure it's really totally chicken related, although I'd focus on chickens in it, but I thought I might write a sort of beginner's guide to genetics? Of course, I'm not an expert by any means, but I feel like I might be able to translate some of the jargon into terms that are more easily understood. Does that seem like a useful idea to anyone, or should I try to think of something else?

Ahhh lol. Well I suppose I'd pay 20$ a chick for a sq ameraucana but not a hatchery bird. Bleh.

For sure! The only advantage is that you can get them sexed from a hatchery, though like I mentioned, they aren't going to be very high quality. And CCCCCHICKENS is right, I had heard that they were throwing whites for some reason. The strange thing is that Ameraucanas are usually dominant white, meaning that a bird shouldn't be able to carry white without appearing white. There are some recessive white Ams out there, but they are rare and from what I've heard the people that own them usually don't let them go easily.

Huh. And they're definitely not some weird extremely light splash or something? Well in that case I don't see how it would be possible for them to be doing anything other than breeding with whites, in which case, again, they're misrepresenting themselves. Ugh.


You know I really wonder what hatcheries breeding pens look like. From what I've read, I think I'd be as disgusted as the sorting conveyors and gad chambers for males and overhatch make me.

Agreed. I wouldn't give up a recessive white. I have a bantam AM I hatched from BBS eggs and she is pure white.

I wonder too. I watched a video of hyline hatchery.Saw what they did with their extra males. Poor chicks!

Yay, chickies! I have 42 days until I pick mine up, so I need my chicky fix to keep me going! e



I forgot to mention also, in my last posts, that all the coop pictures have me drooling! We're planning to build a covered area over a small section of the chicken yard for rain cover, but I keep wanting to build a bigger coop to feed my chicken math urges. Too bad stuff costs money. :/
